Chapter Twenty-Four: High School Female Teachers in the 1980s

"That Mr. Lin stayed in the hospital without paying any fees."

"Very good!" After saying that, Director Wei took out his pen and quickly wrote it down in his notebook.

"I heard that Du Junsheng had an improper relationship with a female doctor at the hospital. How did you find out about this? You're his son-in-law, he should be keeping it from you. You probably don't know much about it."

Li Shaojie clenched his fists and placed them on his thighs, trying to stop his legs from shaking. He remembered what Director Zhou had told him yesterday: "If you don't crush Du Junsheng, you won't have a good life at the academy."

Li Shaojie recounted in fragments what Director Zhou had told him yesterday.

Director Wei stopped taking notes, and Li Shaojie felt that she probably didn't believe him. A sense of panic began to creep in; at this point, if they didn't believe him, a cold sweat broke out on Li Shaojie's back.

“I was still in the operating room when I saw him groping the female doctor. He even threatened her, saying that if she told anyone, he would make sure she could never stay in the hospital again.”

Director Wei casually wrote a few words and then asked, "Du Junsheng is from the academy, how come he has so much power over the hospital? Do you know that?"

Li Shaojie was taken aback. The information had been provided by Director Zhou, who had only given him a general overview: "He, he, along with Director Fang from the hospital, and quite a few other chief physicians, they form a small group. They..."

Li Shaojie was relieved to hear Director Wei's pen start taking notes again.

Li Shaojie talked for more than an hour, and in the end, Director Wei even asked him to put his fingerprint on the record book.

He then realized that the person taking notes was the young man in the jacket next to him.

After he came out of the meeting room, Secretary Chen and Director Zhou also came out quickly.

"Secretary Chen, my mother is ill, and I'd like to ask for leave to take care of her." Li Shaojie deliberately made up an excuse to stop Secretary Chen. He wanted to see if Secretary Chen's attitude towards him would be different from before.

Secretary Chen turned to Director Zhou and said, "For specific details about your work, you should ask your department head."

Director Zhou said in a relaxed tone, "Go on, and remember not to mention today's conversation to anyone. Understand?"

Before leaving, Director Zhou gave him a final instruction, which Li Shaojie nodded in agreement. He then looked at Secretary Chen, who had already left, with Director Zhou following behind.

Not being able to confirm Secretary Chen's attitude left him feeling somewhat empty and uneasy.

Li Shaojie didn't return to his office; he went straight to the hospital. All the way there, his heart was pounding like it had just been revived.

Li Shaojie carefully reviewed what had just been said in his mind. Director Zhou had said that day that issues involving romantic relationships were the hardest to investigate because even if the parties involved denied it, they would still be presumed to have, making things worse the more they tried to explain. Mr. Lin, the overseas Chinese, had already returned to China and was difficult to contact now. Therefore, Du Junsheng was definitely finished this time. In serious cases, he would likely face imprisonment.

Thinking of Du Junsheng's usual favoritism towards Fang Minghui, Li Shaojie felt much better. Even though he was now Du Junsheng's son-in-law, he hadn't seen Du Junsheng treat him the same way he treated Fang Minghui. Even during surgeries, Du Junsheng would always bring Fang Minghui along. He would even say in front of so many people that since Fang Minghui wanted to pursue a clinical career, he should observe and practice more. Making favoritism sound so sweet was truly disgusting.

The next day, Du Junsheng did not appear at the college.

Director Zhou told him not to contact him for the time being, and no one in the office spoke to him. Even so, Li Shaojie soon heard that Du Junsheng had been placed under investigation.
