Late at night, a strange noise came from the woods behind the mountain. Yideng opened his eyes and ran out without even putting on his coat.
Not long after Yideng left, a figure appeared in the room, accompanied by a seductive fox-like fragrance.
“It’s you,” Xia Linyin said. “Master is not inside; he has gone out.”
"I know." The six-tailed fox smiled faintly, picked up the mirror, and her phoenix eyes sparkled with allure. "I came to find you."
"Looking for me? What do you want?" Xia Linyin raised an eyebrow.
"I want to destroy you." The six-tailed fox's sharp nails lightly traced across the mirror, the movement gentle yet laced with murderous intent.
"Why?" Xia Linyin asked.
“Because of… jealousy. I’m jealous that you can be by the Master’s side, with him day and night, while I can only watch him from afar and will never be able to have him.”
The six-tailed fox smiled sweetly, "I'm insanely jealous of you. Since I can't have the master, then you can forget about staying by his side."
"I see." Xia Linyin held out her hand to the mirror. Her pale skin looked even more ghostly and eerie in the moonlight. She curled her lips into a smile. "Do you want to hear a better solution? A way that will allow you to stay by the master's side and be with him day and night."
The six-tailed fox's heart stirred, and its gaze fell on Xia Linyin's hands. It asked, "How do you do it?"
Xia Linyin's smile deepened. She knew that the six-tailed fox couldn't refuse, couldn't refuse this sweet and tempting fruit she had thrown out.
...
As dawn approached, Yideng returned to his room clutching his chest. He opened a porcelain bottle, poured out a few pills, and swallowed them with water.
A worried voice came from inside the mirror, "Master, are you alright?"
Yi Deng shuddered, his gaze shooting like an arrow into the mirror. A familiar face, a familiar voice, but the tone in those words was one he had never heard before. Xia Linyin never truly cared about him.
After staring at his reflection in the mirror for a while, Yideng said, "Little mirror, I'll let you go."
"Master..."
Yi Deng lowered his eyes, his long eyelashes concealing the darkness in them, making it impossible to discern his thoughts. "Haven't you always wanted to leave?"
"Bald monk, are you really going to let me go? Or are you trying to trick me?"
Yideng's expression shifted slightly as he looked back at the mirror, his gaze seemingly trying to penetrate the depths of the person reflected in it.
The figure neither dodged nor flinched, allowing him to scrutinize it.
A few pine branches stretched into the house. "Dengdeng, that fox demon is here again! I was careless and fell for her charm, and I couldn't stop her. Is anything missing from your room?"
"puff--"
Yideng suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood.
"Lights up!!" Ah Song called out anxiously.
Yideng shook his head at Asong.
Spots of blood on the ground resembled blooming red plum blossoms, staining his lips crimson.
He curled his lips into a smile, his long, narrow eyes sparkling with captivating beauty, and the cinnabar mole between his brows was alluring and dazzling.
However, this smile that made the world pale in comparison faded away in an instant, like a fleeting moment.
Yideng looked at the Demon-Revealing Mirror and said something cryptic, "The formation on the back mountain is about to fail."
Without waiting for the mirror's response, he continued, "The formation has failed, the demon realm and the human realm have connected, and chaos has engulfed the world."
"The Demon-Revealing Mirror is full of myriad illusions. It is made with the Netherworld Fire and contains the aura of the Netherworld Fire. Using the mirror as a boundary, it can repair the formation and ensure peace and stability in the human world for a hundred years."
Yideng slowly asked, "Do you really want to stay in the mirror to repair the array and the barrier?"
In the mirror, the six-tailed fox, who had transformed into Xia Linyin's appearance, changed its expression drastically and exclaimed in shock, "You crafted the Demon-Revealing Mirror just to repair the barrier and resist the invasion of the demon and monster realms?"
"Yes, otherwise why would I refine her?"
Yideng's voice was extremely soft, as if he were telling the six-tailed fox, or perhaps himself, the purpose of his crafting the demon-revealing mirror.
"She's smart; she knew to escape first."
Upon hearing this, the six-tailed fox trembled with rage, "That bitch, she lied to me!!"
Suddenly, Yideng reached into the mirror, grabbed the six-tailed fox by the neck, pulled her out of the mirror, and slammed her heavily against the wall.
The six-tailed fox's body slammed against the wall and then fell heavily to the ground. A metallic taste rose in her throat, and she coughed up several mouthfuls of blood while clutching her neck, which bore fingerprints.
"If I hear you say another bad word about her, the consequences won't be so simple. Get out!!"
The six-tailed fox looked up at Yideng, her phoenix eyes filled with tears. She bit her lip, then got up and stumbled away.
Yideng sat down on the futon, looking down at the mirror in his hand, his gaze devoid of joy or sorrow, like a still well.
He sat there motionless for a long time, until the sun was high in the sky, and he slowly stood up.
Yideng put the mirror into his bosom, took off his Buddhist prayer beads, and put the beads and the Qiankun bag into the wooden box.
He opened the hidden compartment, took out the scriptures inside, gently stroked the cover, and then put the scriptures back into the wooden box.
After everything was packed up, Yideng closed the lid of the box and locked it.
Carrying the wooden box out of the house, Ichidō looked at the big pine tree in the yard and said, "Ah-Matsu, the task of finding the next Guardian is entrusted to you."
Asong reached out a branch and took the wooden box from Yideng's hand, then fused the box into the tree trunk, choking back tears as he said, "Okay..."
Yideng patted the pine tree, turned around, and walked firmly toward the back mountain.
Gazing at Yideng's retreating figure, Asong's voice was filled with sobs, "The temple is empty again..."
