Chapter 5 Bus Route 5

Seeing the excitement in the boy's eyes, Xia Linyin's throat tightened. Apart from the players, all the NPCs on the bus could be ghosts, so this boy... could also be a ghost.

Xia Linyin broke out in a cold sweat. A series of thoughts flashed through her mind in an instant. If the player's task was to find the ghost on the bus, was it possible that the game would also assign tasks to the ghost, making it find and kill the players? Or perhaps the game would restrict the ghost from killing NPCs indiscriminately, otherwise it would be punished? So the ghost was also looking for them, and would make its move once it confirmed that they were players.

Now that their player identities have been completely exposed, the ghost may already be eyeing them, just waiting for the right moment to strike.

This is just a guess, and the ghost might not even be on the bus yet, Xia Linyin comforted herself in her heart. She looked at the boy and slightly curled the corners of her mouth, "It's just... a game that girls play. I'm afraid you won't like it."

The boy gave a regretful "Oh," nodded, and turned away.

"From now on, we can't reveal that we're players anytime we want," Xia Linyin said in a low voice. She sat up straight in her seat, trying her best to look normal.

Seeing Xia Linyin's serious tone, the two people, who didn't know what was going on, quickly sat up straight, extremely nervous.

"I'm Xia Linyin, what's your name?" Xia Linyin turned her head to look at the girl in the school uniform, her voice natural and without any hint of abnormality.

"I...I'm Zhang Yaya," the girl replied in a barely audible voice.

“Okay, Ya Ya, now you and I will start observing the people on the bus, secretly without being noticed by them, and see who is most likely to be the ghost. If you find anything strange, tell me.” Xia Linyin whispered in Zhang Ya Ya’s ear.

Zhang Yaya shook her head, burying it low. "I don't dare, I don't dare to look."

Hearing Zhang Yaya's voice, which was on the verge of tears, Xia Linyin did not force her. She simply said, "Whether you wait to die or try to survive, it's your choice. I think that even if I die in the end, at least I will have struggled to live."

Xia Linyin turned to look at the woman in the suit and saw that she was secretly glancing at her from head to toe while she was crying, her eyes filled with suspicion. Xia Linyin looked away, closed her eyes and sighed.

When she got up and walked towards Zhang Yaya, she never expected to rely on Zhang Yaya and the others to complete the mission. Even though her reason told her that she might be dragged down, she still came. She just wanted to have a little more courage to live through the layers of oppressive terror.

Zhang Yaya clenched her fist, then slowly raised her head. Her gaze quickly returned to the ground when it met the white-clad woman's thick, black hair, but she kept her eyes closed, her eyelashes trembling. This time, she did not lower her head again.

After a while, she mustered up her courage and looked ahead again. At first, she thought Xia Linyin was a ghost, but in fact, Xia Linyin was a player like her, so this woman in white might just be an ordinary person.

Thinking about it this way, Zhang Yaya's fear lessened a bit. Xia Linyin had shown her to look at all the people on the bus, not a particular person, so anyone could be a ghost, even if that person didn't look like a ghost at all.

Zhang Yaya's gaze shifted to the boy in the front row. Could this boy be the ghost?

"Lin...Linyin, are you saying that the ghosts among these people are like they're possessed?" Zhang Yaya whispered in Xia Linyin's ear.

Xia Linyin didn't answer the question, but instead asked, "What are your thoughts?"

The game provides very little information, only a few words. As a complete novice with no experience, all her current ideas are based on her various guesses. Therefore, she doesn't want Zhang Yaya to completely follow her train of thought. She hopes that Zhang Yaya can make some judgments of her own, and these judgments may touch on points that she hasn't thought of.

Zhang Yaya swallowed hard. "Linyin, aren't ghosts invisible? Do you think it's possible that a ghost is floating right next to us?"

“That’s highly unlikely. Have you noticed? Someone gets on the bus at every stop. The game is for us to find the ghost. If we—” Xia Linyin’s voice trailed off.

She originally thought that the game couldn't be a complete dead end; it would give players a chance to survive. Since the game could bring players in, it would be easy for it to kill a player, so there was no need to make it so complicated. Therefore, the game wouldn't be a doomed situation.

If ghosts float in the air, how can mortals, who cannot see them, find them?

If they can't find the ghost, they can't eliminate it, and they can only wait to be killed by the ghost, which is a certain death situation.

At each stop, people will get on, and it's clear that finding the hidden ghost among these people is more in line with the information and game settings.

But just now, she suddenly thought, what if ghosts really can't be seen, and these people are just used to confuse players? Usually when playing games, there are all kinds of props, and what players have to do is find the key props and then use the props to find the ghosts that they can't see, or make the ghosts appear.

Could it be that she's overthinking it?

Xia Linyin rubbed her temples in pain; sometimes having too much imagination isn't a good thing.

"I've heard that mirrors can reflect things that people can't see, but I don't know if it's true." Xia Linyin opened the mirror in her hand.

"You...you mean...you want to..." Zhang Yaya's heart pounded.

At this moment, Xia Linyin slowly moved the mirror, and she saw her pale face flash in the mirror.

Xia Linyin stared intently at the mirror, which slowly rotated...

Sweat trickled down her face.

When Xia Linyin put the mirror down, her palms were sweaty and slippery, almost causing her to drop it.

Zhang Yaya looked at her nervously, swallowed, and asked, "Did you see anything?"

Xia Linyin shook her head. She hadn't noticed anything unusual when she looked around in the mirror, and she even lingered a little longer when she saw the reflection of a few passengers.

Suddenly, Xia Linyin had a very strong feeling, a feeling that made the back of her neck feel cold.

Someone is watching her!

Is it a ghost? Is she being targeted by a ghost?

That gaze, firmly fixed on her, came from behind her!
