Cen Yu looked at the photos in this "secret room". There were not many things in the room, only a simple chair and a folding bed. The room had no windows and was completely dark when the lights were off.
Cen Yu walked over and glanced at the dust on the chair, guessing that Pei Lejun probably hadn't been in the room for a long time, as a lot of dust had accumulated on it.
He sat there and looked around the room—
No matter which angle he turns his head, he can see countless photos of himself, as if every moment of his life has been recorded.
This feeling of being spied on gave Cen Yu a suffocating sensation, as if he were being entangled by a serpent. He could almost hear the sound of his bones breaking before being swallowed whole.
If Pei Leyun were still alive, he could question her about what she was thinking and why she had been secretly filming him since the start of the semester.
Unfortunately, Pei Leyun is now dead, and unless we find his ghost, no one knows what he was thinking.
After sitting in the chair and observing his own photo for a while, Cen Yu walked over to the folding bed and sat down. This folding bed was quite old; it was probably the kind of spring folding bed that was most common in the 1990s. It didn't look new; it looked more like something he had found at a flea market.
While sitting on the folding bed, Cen Yu specifically measured the length and found that it wasn't long enough for an adult to sleep on.
As he sat down, the folding bed momentarily dented, which made him notice what was hidden underneath.
He lifted the bed sheet and saw the cardboard box underneath. After Cen Yu pulled it out, he found that the box was full of miscellaneous items, from laptops to mineral water bottles, all of which had been stuffed into the box.
The computer was the same model Pei Leyun had used before, and the mineral water bottle was nothing special.
“…I have an idea,” Pei Baijun said.
"Then don't tell me." Cen Yu stuffed the mineral water bottle into a corner of the box. He wasn't stupid; in this situation, where did the mineral water bottle come from? There didn't seem to be any other possibility.
Fortunately, the box contained only unimportant items, some of which had dates printed on them. Cen Yu knew without even thinking that these were the dates Pei Leyun had "picked up."
He really didn't expect that Pei Leyun had such a hobby of "collecting trash".
Cen Yu sat there pondering, when he heard footsteps... Pei Baijun let out a howl and tried to dart away, as if Pei Heng was the ghost who had encountered him.
Pei Heng learned from the maid that Cen Yu wanted to open the door to the secret base. He paused in his tracks, which were originally heading to the study, and finally turned towards the media room.
As soon as he stepped inside, he heard a loud "whoosh," and then he discovered that the door to the secret base had been opened.
Without having time to think about who was shouting inside, Pei Heng immediately went in and saw Cen Yu's photos covering almost every corner of the room.
The sudden impact made him pause, frozen in place.
In the photos, Cen Yu is mostly not looking at the camera, and some angles are even tricky. In addition, Cen Yu's face still has a bit of naivety at the time, so it doesn't look like the photos were taken after the two got married.
He knew that Pei Leyun had a hobby of taking photos.
But he didn't know that Pei Leyun had taken so many photos of Cen Yu in the secret base, which was completely different from the adopted son he knew—the idea that Cen Yu had deliberately approached Pei Leyun in order to marry into the family now seemed to be crumbling.
Anyone who looks at the photos in this room can feel the sticky, suffocating gaze that Pei Leyun is trying to convey through the lens.
Pei Heng opened his mouth as if to say something, but seemed to feel that all words were pale under the impact of these photos. In the end, he just pursed his lips and looked at the photos. "If it needs to be cleaned up," he said to Cen Yu, "I can help."
Cen Yu looked at the photo, then finally stood up. "No need."
Ultimately, the existence of these photos is a fact; even if they are burned, they still exist.
He stuffed the box of odds and ends back under the folding bed and prepared to leave the small room.
Pei Heng stepped aside to let him pass.
“I just heard a sound,” Pei Heng said. “A person let out a howl.”
"...Are there any wandering ghosts here?"
If it had been a day earlier, Pei Heng would never have said such a thing. He never expected that in just over a day, he would have completely accepted such supernatural and bizarre things.
“No,” Cen Yu said.
Pei Heng was just about to breathe a sigh of relief—
“It’s your uncle calling, Mr. Pei,” Cen Yu said sincerely to Pei Heng. “It’s not some wandering ghost, it’s your relative.”
Pei Heng: "..."
For the first time, he found the words "your little uncle" so jarring.
Cen Yu seemed oblivious to Pei Heng's complicated feelings, and said to herself, "I'll go back to my rented apartment tomorrow."
"So fast?" Pei Heng was somewhat surprised.
Although he had some idea when Cen Yu said she was going to move back, he didn't expect Cen Yu to be planning to move back the next day.
In his memory, Cen Yu seemed to have always wanted to move here.
"Besides the geographical location, what other inconveniences are there?" Pei Heng asked. Whether it was his uncle's side or Pei Leyun's relationship, he had a reason to take care of Cen Yu, both morally and logically.
Pei Heng also thought of a solution to Cen Yu's earlier reason that the commute to work was too far.
The Pei family has a driver who can pick up and drop off Cen Yu at get off work.
Of course, Pei Heng also considered other things that Cen Yu might find inconvenient. He thought of many things, but he never expected Cen Yu to say this.
"The yin energy is too heavy," Cen Yu said to Pei Heng.
“Mr. Pei, this place is too yin, it seems a bit too easy for it to be haunted.”
Pei Heng opened his mouth to refute, but then he remembered what Uncle Sun had told him: Cen Yu had heard people whispering under the balcony.
"I will find a way to solve it."
“I’ll move back once you’ve sorted things out,” Cen Yu said to Pei Heng.
...
After checking with Meng Yunqiu about his return time to the company, Cen Yu lay down on the bed to prepare for sleep.
He glanced at the time, trying to guess how likely it was that he would dream of Pei Leyun tonight.
At 11 p.m., the entire Pei family villa fell silent... Then Cen Yu heard familiar whispers again, as if they wanted Cen Yu to hear them but didn't want him to hear them clearly. He could only hear the soft voices, but he couldn't make out what they were talking about.
With the desire to understand what they were saying, Cen Yu strained his ears and concentrated intently, but his consciousness grew increasingly blurred.
When his breathing gradually became steady and he fell into a deep sleep on the bed, Pei Baijun appeared in the bedroom.
His body was translucent; he sat on the edge of Cen Yu's bed, looking down at his face.
Without a smile, Pei Baijun looked as gloomy as Pei Heng remembered. He reached out to touch Cen Yu's neck, which was covered with plaster... but just one centimeter away from Cen Yu's neck, he was blocked by an invisible force.
Pei Baijun looked at his hand, which was being blocked, and said, "It's an eyesore."
