Chapter 88 The Eight Husbands from Previous Lives' Pursuit of Their Wives (3)

The system skillfully scanned the city.

It said, "Found it. The nearest male supporting character is in this city."

It simply describes the city with the image of mugwort.

Although the city is unremarkable in appearance, it is still one of the more well-known mortal cities. Moreover, it is the closest of all the legendary immortal cultivation caves to this city.

It is said that the legendary nine-tailed fox will come here to forge a lifelong pact with its chosen one. Therefore, more cultivators have been visiting this city recently than usual.

Ai Cao looked down at the little fox in her arms, who was sniffing curiously with its nose wrinkled.

Ai Cao asked, "Was that nine-tailed fox you?"

The little fox wrinkled its nose and let out a soft whimper.

The system then introduces the male supporting character in this city.

"The male supporting character in this city once controlled the female lead in his previous life," the system said. "Simply put, the male supporting character chased, and the female lead ran away. After several escapes, the female lead was imprisoned by the male supporting character. The two fell in love out of hatred, and in the end, the female lead willingly gave her tail to the male supporting character."

The mugwort gently touches the little fox.

She had no particular thoughts about the female protagonist's past lives; she only hoped that the little fox in this life wouldn't be so silly.

She took the silver she had extorted from the system, carried the little fox, and went into the inn to ask for a room.

The innkeeper caught a glimpse of her white dress and lowered her head, not daring to look at her. The innkeeper kept her head down throughout the check-in process and even waived her payment, feeling extremely apprehensive.

The inn had a small storefront, but a spacious interior. The landlady personally led her across creaking wooden footsteps, around several walls, and into a quiet little courtyard.

Although the courtyard is small, it has trees and flowers, as well as a set of stone tables and benches for appreciating the trees.

Just as Ai Cao was about to speak, she heard a loud "clucking" from outside the courtyard wall.

Before the hen had even finished laying her egg, another flurry of activity erupted.

It looked like someone's haystack had collapsed and hit someone.

In an instant, the sounds of hay scattering, hens clucking, and people shouting mingled together, filling the once quiet little courtyard.

The little fox in her arms immediately sat up straight, its eyes fixed on the courtyard wall.

Artemisia pulled the little fox back into her arms. Under Artemisia's forceful control, it struggled, punching and kicking her arms. But Artemisia held its belly firmly, and it lost its strength, surrendering and lying in her arms.

The proprietress chuckled twice and said, "This is still a mortal city after all. If the immortals want to go to a place with more abundant spiritual energy..."

Ai Cao shook her head and said, "It's fine here."

She roughly estimated how long it would take to kill the male supporting character and said, "I'll set it at three days for now, and then we'll see how things go."

The proprietress smiled broadly: "Oh dear, the immortal can stay here as long as he wishes! It's almost dinner time, so I'll have my servant bring the immortal some fasting pills."

The landlady handed the key to the small courtyard and the room door to Ai Cao, then turned and hurriedly left.

Ai Cao held the key and opened the door. The various items in the room were old, but they were still relatively clean.

After checking her over, she sat down on the edge of the bed, holding the little fox.

She had barely settled down when the little fox leaped off her lap. Halfway there, it was pulled back down by the scruff of its neck by Ai Cao.

It had no choice but to nestle back on her lap. Its eyes were wide open, silently bristling as it confronted the mugwort.

The mugwort stared at it for a few seconds and said, "You can't eat other people's chickens."

The little fox let out a soft "woof".

Its tense body relaxed a little, but the fur on its back was still standing on end.

Ai Cao thought for a moment, then changed her question: "Do you want to eat a person, or do you want to eat a chicken?"

She skillfully coaxed the little fox: "If you eat the chicken, I can only take you to eat people a little later—do you remember the person you ate before? The kind that grows a tail after you eat it once."

The little fox tilted its head. Its black, beady eyes revealed a clear naiveté, as if asking Ai Cao who it had eaten before.

Artemisia asked the system, "Can it understand me?"

The system hesitated a bit: "Logically, it should be able to understand. Just treat it like a two- or three-year-old child."

Two or three years old...

Ai Cao looked at the little fox and sighed deeply.

She raised pine trees in the last world, and she raises little foxes in this world.

This time, the creature being raised is neither human nor much younger than the female protagonist from the previous world.

It keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Since it's a cub, we can't expect too much from it.

Artemisia reached out and touched the little fox's mouth.

She plucked a drop of blood from the fox's fur and brought it to the little fox's nose.

The little fox's nose twitched slightly, and a drop of glistening saliva drooped from the corner of its mouth.

Ai Cao raised her hand slightly at the opportune moment and asked, "Do you want this, or—" She casually pointed outside, "...or do you want chicken?"

The little fox stared intently at the mugwort's hand, not moving an inch.

Artemisia lowered her hand and said, "Then you can't go and steal chickens..." Before she could finish speaking, the little fox jumped up on the spot. It raised its front legs high and used its hind legs to try to bite Artemisia's hand—then its nose poked into Artemisia's arm.

The little fox froze and lay down on the spot.

Amused, Ai Cao poked the little fox who was pretending to be dead and asked, "What's wrong?"

The little fox secretly opened its eyes a crack, then quickly closed them again.

A child's voice came from outside the door. The child said, "Immortal, please use the Bigu Pill."

The little fox's ears twitched.

Afraid that the fox would escape her sight, Ai Cao actually ran to the neighbor's yard to steal chickens. So she simply scooped the little fox up and put it back in her arms before opening the door.
