Chapter 48: Educated Youth Going to the Countryside (47)

Seeing Su Yao in such pain, Zhao Yu felt as if his heart was being torn apart. He held Su Yao's hand tightly and said softly, "Su Yao, don't be sad. I'll go ask the captain for leave right away, and we'll go home immediately." After saying that, he gently wiped away Su Yao's tears, and then turned to find the captain.

Zhao Yu rushed to the captain's office, anxiously explaining Su Yao's situation and her desire to go home. Looking at Zhao Yu's anxious expression and determined eyes, the captain was moved. He pondered for a moment, then finally nodded and said, "Alright, I approve your leave. But you must be careful on your journey. I hope you can resolve the issue as soon as possible and return home soon." Zhao Yu was deeply grateful, repeatedly thanking the captain before hurrying back to Su Yao's side.

Zhao Yu and Su Yao quickly packed their luggage and set off for the town. They boarded a dilapidated oxcart. The people on the cart couldn't help but cast curious glances at Su Yao's swollen eyes and sorrowful expression, and began to whisper among themselves.

"Why does this girl look so sad? Did something bad happen?"

"I heard they ran into trouble at the educated youth settlement, but we don't know the specifics."

"Sigh, life wasn't easy for these educated youth..."

Although the whispers weren't loud, they still reached Su Yao's ears clearly. Her face grew even paler, her head drooped lower, and tears began to flow uncontrollably again. Zhao Yu tenderly embraced Su Yao, gently comforting her, "Don't be afraid, Su Yao. These people don't know the situation. We don't need to pay attention to what they say. We'll be in town soon, and then we can go home."

After a long and bumpy journey, they finally arrived in town. Su Yao and Zhao Yu went straight to the supply and marketing cooperative. As soon as Su Yao got out of the car, she couldn't wait to run to the telephone inside.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably, as if the telephone receiver weighed a ton. She struggled to pick it up, her fingers trembling as she dialed the Su family's number. With each digit she pressed, her heart skipped a beat, as if this were her last lifeline.

The dial tone, however, sounded like a death knell to her ears, making her increasingly anxious. Finally, her father's anxious voice came from the other end: "Hello, is this Yao Yao?"

Upon hearing her father's voice, Su Yao felt a surge of pent-up grievances and fear, like a flood bursting its banks. Her throat felt constricted, and words poured out amidst her sobs: "Dad, I can't stay here any longer. So many things have happened. That Wang Qiang's mother, she's a complete shrew! Today, she led a group of people to the educated youth settlement, causing trouble and insisting that Wang Qiang saved me, demanding repayment and forcing me to marry him. She kept spewing out horrible things, every conceivable word imaginable. I can't take it anymore, I really don't know what to do." She spoke haltingly, her voice filled with helplessness and despair.

Upon hearing his daughter's tearful account, Su's father's anger flared instantly. He gripped the phone tightly, the veins on the back of his hand bulging. But he knew that what his daughter needed most at that moment was comfort. He suppressed his anger, trying to keep his voice calm and firm: "Yaoyao, don't be afraid. Dad will definitely find a way to solve this problem. Remember, Dad will always be your strongest support. Just wait quietly at the educated youth settlement and don't wander off. We'll send someone to pick you up and take you home right away."

Mr. Su returned home with a solemn expression. His steps were slightly heavy, and his eyes revealed deep worry. As soon as he entered the house, he went straight to Mr. Su's study.

"Dad, something's happened." Su's father's voice was tinged with exhaustion and anxiety.

Grandpa Su put down the book in his hand, looked up at Su's father, and asked in his eyes.

Father Su took a deep breath and said slowly, "Yaoyao got into some trouble at the educated youth settlement. That Wang Qiang's mother brought people to the settlement to cause trouble, insisting that Wang Qiang saved Yaoyao and that Yaoyao should repay him by marrying Wang Qiang. She also said a lot of nasty things. Yaoyao suffered a lot of injustice, and now we have to bring her back as soon as possible."

Upon hearing this, Old Master Su's face immediately darkened, and a flash of anger appeared in his eyes: "This is utter nonsense!"

When the rest of the Su family heard the news, they all gathered around, their faces filled with anger and worry.

"Wang Qiang's mother has gone too far!" Su's eldest sister-in-law said angrily, her eyebrows furrowed and her eyes filled with dissatisfaction.

"That's right, how can our Su family's daughter be bullied like this!" Su's third brother chimed in, his fists clenched tightly, as if he wanted to confront Wang Qiang's mother immediately.

The second brother of the Su family looked serious, his eyes revealing determination: "Dad, I will personally go and bring Yao Yao back. I want to see just how bold Wang Qiang's mother really is!"

Father Su nodded and said, "Alright, I'll feel more at ease if you go. But we can't just let this matter go like this; we need to discuss how to handle it."

Everyone nodded and began to discuss.

"We can't let Wang Qiang's mother off easily; we must make her pay for her actions!" said the eldest sister of the Su family, her eyes flashing with anger.

“That’s right, we can resolve this issue through legal channels and let her know that the Su family is not to be trifled with!” Su’s second brother suggested.

"But we also need to consider Yao Yao's feelings and not let this incident have too much of an impact on her mental health," Su's eldest sister-in-law reminded her.
