Chapter 40 Reinforcements

When Luo Jiu woke up, it was already night.

When Gu Muchen woke up, he felt a little better, so he got up and lit the embers left over from yesterday.

Luo Jiu looked around and saw that she was still in the cave. She was a little disappointed, but she couldn't complain. She could only comfort herself that reinforcements would be here soon.

"Awake? Come here." Gu Muchen beckoned to her by the fire, his face not so pale in the firelight.

Luo Jiu slowly walked over, sat down next to him, stared at the flames, and quietly lost in thought.

Gu Muchen knew what she was worried about, so he patted her head and comforted her, "Don't worry, your royal uncle assures you, someone will be here soon."

What do you think I'm worried about? Am I worried about myself?

I'm worried that if you don't get back, your wound will become infected and fester, and you'll die. Can't you take your own life a little more seriously?

Luo Jiu was indignant, her little face flushed red with anger.

After listening, Gu Muchen stared at her blankly for a long time. After a moment, he came to his senses and chuckled softly.

"Ah... I see. The little one is already feeling sorry for her royal uncle. Your royal uncle hasn't spoiled you for nothing." After saying that, he rubbed Luo Jiu's little head vigorously again.

Don't worry.

Gu Muchen was injured and couldn't leave the cave, and Luo Jiu couldn't read the moon, so she didn't know what time it was or how long she had been in the cave.

Just as Luo Jiu was about to drift off to sleep again, Gu Muchen suddenly opened his eyes. A sharp glint flashed in his brown eyes.

Gu Muchen patted Luo Jiu, who was fast asleep, and said, "Xiao Jiu, wake up. Someone's here."

"Hmm..." Upon hearing this, Luo Jiu groggily opened her eyes, and after a moment, she realized what was happening and exclaimed in surprise, "Has someone come to rescue us?"

"I don't know." Gu Muchen said, glancing at the burning fire, "Put the fire out first."

"Okay." Luo Jiu tensed up upon hearing this. If they were caught by those assassins, they would be like lambs to the slaughter. She quickly went over and put out the fire.

She then helped Gu Muchen move to sit on the wall.

Now we can only leave it to fate; hopefully, they'll find the Imperial Guards.

As if sensing Luo Jiu's unease, Gu Muchen held Luo Jiu's sweaty hand and gently comforted her.

...

Before long, even Luo Jiu heard footsteps. Torches illuminated the area around the cave.

Luo Jiu was curled up in Gu Muchen's arms, barely daring to breathe, for fear that the assassin would come looking for her.

Suddenly, a moving eye appeared in my line of sight, emitting a faint brownish-yellow light.

Meow~

"It's my little cutie!" Luo Jiu exclaimed in surprise, climbing out of Gu Muchen's arms and running towards the brownish-yellow eyes.

"Tuanzi! How did you know Mommy was here!" Luo Jiu hugged Tuanzi and rubbed against him vigorously, muttering to herself with a smile.

Gu Muchen watched the person in his arms fly away quickly without the slightest hesitation. He smiled helplessly and cursed inwardly, "That heartless little thing."

The people outside the cave also heard the commotion and went inside with torches.

"Your Majesty, Regent! Your subordinate is late, please forgive me!" A tall and imposing man in armor walked up to Luo Jiu and knelt on one knee.

This man was none other than Chen Ye, the commander of the Imperial Guards.

"Oh, rise! I'm fine." Luo Jiu paused, then added:

"But the Regent was slashed in several places while protecting me. Quickly send the imperial physician."

Luo Jiu thought that Gu Muchen was injured because of her, so she secretly glanced at him and touched her nose guiltily.
