Huo Jiayuan said cautiously, "I only stayed out this late today; I don't usually do that."
“If you lie, then the problem will be even more serious.”
Pei's father bluntly exposed Huo Jiayuan's lie: "Before we came, did you think I didn't ask the servants?"
"You've been coming home at this time every day for almost a week now."
Pei's father became more and more agitated as he spoke, "My daughter works herself to the bone at the company every day, working overtime until this late, while you're out having fun."
“I didn’t think it would work out when Zhizhi said she wanted to marry you.”
Pei's father said with displeasure, "Where do you find any trace of virtuousness in you?"
If someone else had said that to Huo Jiayuan, he would have jumped up and cursed them long ago.
But this person is Pei Zhi's father, and Pei Zhi grew up with her father since she was a child.
Huo Jiayuan dared not argue and could only swallow his words.
Pei Zhi had just returned when the maid told her that her father had arrived.
Pei Zhi sighed; she knew what the situation was without even thinking.
Pei Zhi changed her shoes, pretending not to notice the strange atmosphere in the living room: "What's going on?"
When Huo Jiayuan saw Pei Zhi return, it was like seeing a lifeline.
Mr. Pei asked with concern, "Is there a lot going on at the company? Why are you working overtime until this late?"
"Doesn't the company have so many employees? Are they all just sitting around doing nothing?"
Pei Zhi explained with a smile, "Weren't we busy with the wedding the other day? Some work things took a backseat."
"You've lost weight again after just a few days. And no one is taking good care of you. You're married now, and I still have to worry about you."
Huo Jiayuan stood to the side with his head down, not daring to speak.
Pei Zhi pretended not to understand the implication in her father's words.
"Dad, what are you saying? How come no one is taking care of me?"
Pei Zhi pointed around and said, "With so many servants taking care of me at home, isn't that enough?"
Pei's father glared at Pei Zhi with a reproachful look, "No matter how well the servants take care of you, it's still not as good as having someone by your side to take care of you."
"It's a pity that you married an immature man who doesn't know how to care for you at all."
Pei Zhi came to the rescue, saying, "Jia Yuan is still young, and he's been very good to me, so Dad, don't worry about him."
How could Pei's father not see that Pei Zhi was protecting Huo Jiayuan?
Pei's father felt sorry for Pei Zhi, who was busy so late, and he didn't want to keep saying bad things about Huo Jiayuan in front of her.
"Alright, alright, I won't say anymore. You should get some rest; it's getting late."
Pei Zhi nodded, "Dad, you should get some rest too. Have the maid heat up a glass of milk for you so you can sleep better."
Pei's father muttered, "Alright, stop worrying about me and go get some rest."
Pei Zhi gestured to Huo Jiayuan, who bowed slightly to Pei's father. "Dad, I'll go up first too."
Pei's father gave a soft hum, which meant he understood.
Huo Jiayuan followed Pei Zhi upstairs and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"No, why did Dad suddenly come? He really scared me to death."
Huo Jiayuan's legs were still a little weak. "Zhizhi, you don't know, as soon as I got back and heard the maid say, 'Dad is here,' I immediately broke out in a cold sweat and really wanted to turn around and run away."
"Alright," Pei Zhi said softly, "You're exaggerating. What's so scary about my dad?"
"He's all smiles and kindness in front of you, but when he's with me, he finds all sorts of things disagreeable."
Pei Zhi said casually, "Just bear with him. It's rare for him to come over."
Huo Jiayuan took off his coat. "But he always says this is wrong and that is no good. It's so annoying."
Pei Zhi placed the cup on the table with a bit of force.
“My dad raised me all by himself, which was very difficult. Even if he said something, it was for my own good.”
Seeing that Pei Zhi was angry, Huo Jiayuan didn't dare to complain anymore and could only nod.
"I've had a long day at work, I'm exhausted, so please stop complaining to me about these things?"
Huo Jiayuan hurriedly said, "Then I'll go and run your bath."
"Never mind." Pei Zhi picked up her phone. "I'm going to the study to deal with an email. You go wash up and go to bed. Don't wait for me."
Before Huo Jiayuan could say anything more, Pei Zhi had already gotten up and left.
Huo Jiayuan kicked the sofa hard, then slapped his mouth, blaming himself for speaking too quickly.
Pei Zhi went to the study and had just sat down when her phone rang.
Xu Xingran and Qu Miaoyu both sent messages to Pei Zhi.
Qu Miaoyu: "Are you very tired right now? How about we go out for a drink?"
Upon hearing Qu Miaoyu's words, Pei Zhi immediately understood.
She said that her father had never visited her newly renovated bridal chamber.
I don't know why, but my father suddenly came over today.
Pei Zhi: "What did you say to my dad again?"
Qu Miaoyu: "I'm just telling the truth. I'm just saying that Huo Jiayuan has been going back home at 11 or 12 o'clock every day for the past few days."
Qu Miaoyu: "He drives around all day, showing off. I don't know what he's trying to impress. Uncle Pei should keep him in check, otherwise he'll really turn the world upside down."
Pei Zhi: "Fine, I'll call you 'sister,' okay? Stop causing me trouble."
Pei Zhi ignored Qu Miaoyu and opened the message Xu Xingran had sent her.
Xu Xingran simply sent a picture without saying anything.
It's an ultrasound report, which shows that she's about seven weeks pregnant.
Pei Zhi made a voice call to Xu Xingran, who answered quickly.
Pei Zhi asked with concern, "Aren't you asleep yet, it's so late?"
"I'm not feeling well and can't sleep."
Pei Zhi leaned back in her chair: "Are you feeling unwell? What's wrong?"
"I went to the hospital for a check-up today and had my blood drawn. I haven't had much of an appetite since I got back. I'm a little hungry now, but I don't want to eat anything."
Pei Zhi immediately became worried, "You haven't eaten anything all day?"
"How can this be? If you don't eat, the baby in your belly won't be able to take it."
Pei Zhi immediately became nervous. Would Xu Xingran miscarry like this?
"What would you like to eat? I'll have someone send it over to you."
Xu Xingran quickly replied, "No need to trouble yourself. If I get hungry, I can just cook some noodles or make some instant noodles myself. It's very convenient."
Xu Xingran whispered, "I just miss you a little."
"I went to the hospital for a prenatal checkup today, and everyone else was with their partners, but I was alone."
Pei Zhi suddenly sighed. If only Huo Jiayuan were even a fraction as sensible as Xu Xingran.
Pei Zhi glanced at her watch; it was 12:30, not too late yet.
"Wait here, I'll bring you some food now."
"No." Xu Xingran refused without even thinking. "It's already so late. Don't run back and forth. It's too tiring and dangerous."
"Just get some rest. I know you care about me and the baby, and that makes me happy."
Xu Xingran is so sensible, which makes Pei Zhi feel a little sorry for her.
