A month is a short time for Mu Wenxi; not enough for her to forget everything from the past, but enough to fade from memory.
Urged by her parents, Mu Wenxi finally took a flight back home late at night. When she arrived at the airport, it was daytime. Although she had taken a nap on the plane, she hadn't slept enough and was feeling a bit unwell.
As she slowly walked out of the airport with her suitcase, she encountered an unexpected person. Feeling a little embarrassed, she decided to pretend she didn't know them.
But to her surprise, the other party walked towards her with a clear objective.
Mu Wenxi stopped in her tracks: "Jiang Ningyuan? What are you doing here? Did you investigate me?"
Jiang Ningyuan, with his unshaven beard, immediately stepped forward to help Mu Wenxi with her suitcase when she saw him, but he dodged her. He didn't mind and put his hand down, looking somewhat haggard: "Wenxi, I was wrong before, let's make up."
Mu Wenxi shook his head decisively. It's always the same; he says he's not good, but he never knows where he went wrong.
She glanced at the crowd around her and, worried about bothering others, said as she walked, "Let it go. I meant what I said before. It's too tiring. Let's let each other go. We're not right for each other; being together would only be torture."
Jiang Ningyuan seemed somewhat unable to accept it: "Wenxi, we always made up before. This time it was my fault. I should have contacted you sooner. I didn't know you were out of town, and I couldn't reach you on your phone. I came here immediately as soon as I knew your schedule for today."
Mu Wenxi: "Let's part ways amicably."
Hearing these hurtful words, Jiang Ningyuan felt a surge of anger rise again, and his voice rose slightly: "Why can you be so heartless? Are you really unwilling to forgive me?"
Mu Wenxi stopped in a quiet corner and looked at him: "I forgive you, but I will not get back together with you. Live your life well."
Jiang Ningyuan said with great certainty, "Wen Xi, don't joke around, you can't live without me."
Mu Wenxi frowned: "No one is indispensable."
Jiang Ningyuan's tone was pleading: "Wenxi, let's make up. No one will love you like I do."
Just as Mu Wenxi was about to retort, a familiar voice came from behind her: "She already told you to let go, so stop bothering her."
Xi Changye, dressed in black, looked much better than Jiang Ningyuan. He walked slowly from the airport entrance behind Wen Xi, one hand in his pocket, and walked to Mu Wenxi's side.
Mu Wenxi was somewhat surprised: "You checked my schedule too?"
Xi Changye felt a little guilty: "No, it was just a coincidence."
Mu Wenxi: "Really?"
Xi Changye poked Mu Wenxi's back with the hand that wasn't in his pocket: "Really!"
Jiang Ningyuan saw Xi Changye and Mu Wenxi talking and quickly interrupted them: "Xi Changye, what brings you here? Wenxi, come over here and stay away from him."
Mu Wenxi really hates getting entangled. The biggest difference between her and the original owner is that she never looks back.
"I'm telling you again very seriously, everything I said that day was true, and I will not get back together with you. I hope you can move on from this relationship soon."
After saying that, Mu Wenxi turned and left, with Xi Changye following behind her.
Jiang Ningyuan watched the two leave and suddenly shouted, "Mu Wenxi, you'll regret this!"
Xi Changye raised an eyebrow upon hearing this, but his gaze fell on Mu Wenxi beside him. She showed no reaction. Could it be that she had truly let go?
Seeing Wen Xi trying to flag down a taxi, Xi Changye quickly grabbed her wrist: "Get in my car."
Mu Wenxi nodded as she looked at the somewhat haggard but still handsome man in front of her, and Xi Changye naturally took her luggage.
The two got into the car, and the car was silent.
Xi Changye broke the silence: "How was your trip outside this past month?"
Mu Wenxi looked in the rearview mirror: "It's great, the air outside is especially fresh."
Xi Changye turned his head and glanced at her: "You... really won't regret it?"
Mu Wenxi glanced at a spot where the cigarette pack hadn't been properly hidden: "Did you put it down?"
Xi Changye unconsciously sat up straight, looking straight ahead, and as if possessed, blurted out what he had wanted to say for a long time: "If I say no, can you give me a chance?"
Mu Wenxi reached out and picked up the cigarette pack. There were only a few cigarettes inside: "Even the strongest perfume can't cover up the smell of cigarettes on you."
Taking advantage of the red light, Xi Changye suddenly lowered his head and sniffed. Damn it, he had brushed his teeth many times and washed his clothes several times. He looked a little embarrassed: "You found out."
The car stopped, and Xi Changye turned around, about to speak to Mu Wenxi, when he saw the other person reach out and poke the dark circles under his eyes.
"Have you... let go?"
Xi Changye's heart suddenly clenched with pain. The other person always seemed to have such an easy way of controlling his heart. He took a slow breath, his eyes darting around: "No, I don't, I can't let go..."
Mu Wenxi looked at the glass in front of her: "Then don't let go. I know I've always been a selfish person. Actually, I've always known your feelings for me, but I've never looked back. Some people say you're my backup plan. I hope you can be free, forget me, and have your own life..."
Xi Changye suddenly interrupted: "Liking you is my own business, it has nothing to do with selfishness or freedom, besides, you rejected me a long time ago, didn't you? It's my own fault for not being able to let go."
Once a member of the Xi family has chosen someone, it's for life.
Mu Wenxi shrugged and didn't reply. After a long silence, she suddenly turned to Xi Changye and said very naturally, "Then would you be willing to marry me? My parents are urging me to get married, and I need a marriage partner. What do you think?"
Xi Changye's eyes widened: "You, you're not joking?"
Mu Wenxi: "You just asked me if I regret it. I owe you so much. Since you can't let go either, why don't you try to make sure I don't regret it?"
Xi Changye couldn't describe his current feeling: "Good."
Seeing his stunned expression, Mu Wenxi said, "See you tomorrow then."
Even after Mu Wenxi went upstairs, Xi Changye was still sitting in the car, staring blankly in the direction she had left. He couldn't believe what had just happened and was completely at a loss.
He opened his phone and dialed a number: "Su Yanhe, I'm getting married."
Su Yanhe: "What? With whom? Xi Changye? You're getting married? You're not kidding me, are you?"
Xi Changye didn't listen to his nonsense and hung up the phone abruptly.
Over the years, he has been trying to convince himself to let go, but it's not easy to just let go of someone you like.
He watched her get a boyfriend, but he didn't feel qualified to be the one by her side. Every time she was sad, he felt sad too. He couldn't help it. Whether she was joking or just looking for someone to talk to, he would try his best to make her fall in love with him.
