Chapter 59 Unwavering Love (Part 3)

This energy has no further use, but it can be absorbed by those with superpowers, enabling them to evolve. It's a ridiculous paradox: zombies eat people, yet people can evolve using zombies. So zombies eat people, and humans hunt zombies.

Although the Ning family does not have any superhumans, if Ning's parents go to the base in the future, the collected crystal cores can be exchanged for various resources.

The crystal core in front of the camera doesn't look very pure; it just glitters and looks similar to ordinary glass.

Ning's father also saw it.

"Is that something inside a zombie's head?" he asked, finding it hard to believe.

The crystal core was on the ground in front of the villa, where two cars had collided. Seemingly fleeing in a panic, the two cars crashed together, even trapping a zombie between them. The zombie's head was crushed, dangling between the vehicles and already beginning to decompose. There was blood on both cars, and two other zombies were gnawing on the corpses inside. Clearly, the crystal core belonged to the zombie with the crushed head. Ning's father couldn't believe his eyes anymore. The appearance of zombies was one thing, but what did the appearance of a crystal core mean?

"I heard that humans have evolved superhumans." Shen Wangshu looked at the crystal core, then at the zombies at the door, and said with a frown.

Although the crystal core was very useful, she didn't plan to take it.

There are two zombies guarding that spot. If we don't manage to retreat back to the villa in time, we'll likely be surrounded by them.

If a fierce fight broke out here, the noise would attract even more zombies, making things even more dangerous. Besides, to get the crystal core, she would have to open the villa's main gate, which was practically suicide—letting zombies in. Shen Wangshu decided it was best not to take on that challenge. Therefore, she only glanced at it before turning away, unaware that the zombie eagerly licking her fingers for its own pleasure, noticed the interest in Shen Wangshu's eyes and also looked up at the crystal core.

"Roar!" he roared.

Shen Wangshu patted his head.

The zombie instinctively rubbed against it, then angrily moved away.

He glanced at the crystal core in front of the camera and roared at Shen Wangshu again.

"I don't want that, okay?" Shen Wangshu keenly sensed the zombie's meaning, and a slight smile appeared on her lips as she looked at the terrifying Ah Xuan.

He was terrifying, yet she felt safe. She climbed onto his lap and sat down. Now that he was a zombie, there was no need to worry about his legs going numb. She then cleared out some daily necessities from her storage space. She brought out two bags of snow-white rice, and saw Ah Xuan stick out a finger and poke it into the bag. After a moment of silence, he turned to Ning's father with a pleading expression.

The rice flowed out through the hole and onto the ground.

The zombie seemed to find the game amusing, its sharp-clawed fingers poking and prodding at the pocket.

"Don't play with this." Shen Wangshu looked at the rice bag full of holes, paused for a moment, and then casually grabbed a wooden carving from a small shelf next to her and stuffed it into Ah Xuan's hand.

"That's a wooden carving that Emperor Kangxi once played with!" Ning's father had just snapped out of his daze of the fantastical terms like "crystal core" and "evolver" when he saw Ah Xuan poking and prodding the wooden carving so easily. He immediately let out a scream, "This is an antique!"

"An antique worth eight thousand yuan?" Shen Wangshu asked with a smile that curved her eyebrows.

"What a steal!" Ning's father trembled with heartache.

"Didn't it already get appraised? The experts all said it's just one of those small wooden carvings sold outside the park, for fifty-one yuan." Ning's father always paid his dues when it came to antiques, yet he thought he had a very sharp eye.

Shen Wangshu smiled as she watched Ning's father's dejected state, finding it both amusing and endearing. Her beloved was still by her side, and Ning's parents hadn't suffered any tragedy; that already filled her with immense satisfaction. However, she also knew that now that Ah Xuan had become a zombie, she could no longer go to the survivor base. Ah Xuan couldn't enter that kind of base, and she didn't intend to take him there.

He was a zombie after all, and Shen Wangshu felt she would feel very guilty if he harmed the civilians inside.

She couldn't take any chances and guarantee that Ah Xuan wouldn't harm humans.

Since that's the case, she'll stay outside and just let Ning's parents receive protection from the base.

Lost in her own thoughts, she felt a pang of regret that this space was exclusively for her use. But that was something she could think about later; at the moment, she had no other thoughts, only squinting as she pondered Song Xi's matter.

This woman was once Ning Rou's best friend, yet she deliberately pushed her to her death and stole the space that rightfully belonged to Ning Rou. She also refused to help Ning Rou's parents in their time of need; such betrayal was something she couldn't let go of. If Ning Rou had already died in the mall, that would be one thing, but if she hadn't…

Shen Wangshu remembered that Song Xi had not awakened any special abilities, and it was because of this that he coveted Ning Rou's space.

Indeed, thanks to her rare spatial "ability," she became a sought-after figure by various bases.

Moreover, she had befriended several of the strongest ability users when they were still very weak, so ordinary schemes couldn't touch her at all.

If Song Xi is not dead, the only way to kill her is to first suppress the superhumans around her.

Shen Wangshu looked at his hands.

These hands are fair and delicate, and very well-maintained. If only they were a little stronger, they could protect the family.

She lowered her voice and sighed.

The awakening of superpowers is highly unpredictable. Some awaken their powers during life-or-death battles, while others... wake up one morning to find themselves different.

Why not try sleeping on it myself? Ning Rou had never awakened any special abilities, but Shen Wangshu still wanted to give it a try.

If all else fails, she'll have to start training her body so she can fight off the zombies.

Since she said she would try sleeping with him, Shen Wangshu slept on the bed in the small storeroom, still being held tightly by A Xuan as she drifted off to sleep.

She had been deeply shaken today, experiencing several emotional breakdowns. Moreover, the fact that she hadn't dared to close her eyes while caring for Ah Xuan had left her utterly exhausted. So, she leaned against Ah Xuan's cold shoulder and fell asleep. She slept soundly, completely oblivious to the possibility of being devoured by a rampaging zombie in the middle of the night. She was also completely unaware that the zombie, who didn't need sleep, released her hand and stiffly, slowly walked out of the villa.

All she knew was that when she opened her eyes, she saw a tall zombie roaring at her.

When he saw that she had woken up, he immediately bared his teeth at her.

Shen Wangshu lowered his head as the zombie gestured, and was slightly taken aback.

A crystal core shone brightly before her eyes.
