Now Shen Wangshu could eat normally. She waved her chopsticks, picked up the food in front of her, and ate happily.
She subconsciously lowered her head and rubbed against her mother's hand, as if she were being affectionate.
The beautiful, delicate girl had long hair draped over her shoulders. Her lovely eyes curved into crescents, like a kitten snuggling against its mother's hand. Her smile was both content and adorable, and in the dim light, it was so serene.
Suddenly, the zombie turned his head and saw her affectionately nuzzling his mother's hand, the elderly woman wearing a loving smile. The zombie was immediately displeased. He reached out and pushed Shen Wangshu, seeing her head turned away, the traces of her smile still in her eyes, and roared.
He glared menacingly at Ning's mother, stretched out the hand that wasn't holding Shen Wangshu, and roared.
Ning's mother stared blankly at the zombie.
Unlike the zombies outside who had been devoured or attacked and were covered in blood and gore, aside from his unusually pale complexion, he remained a handsome and cold-blooded man. However, the distortion on his face forced one to look directly at him; he was a zombie who had long lost the rationality of a living person and could kill them at any moment.
His gleaming white teeth, the grayish-white whites of his eyes, and his terrifying, pinpoint-like pupils were all frightening, yet this terrifying zombie did not devour them.
Seeing Ning's mother in a daze, the zombie impatiently stretched out its arm again.
"Give him the bowl," Ning's father hesitated for a moment, then whispered to Ning's mother.
Ning's mother subconsciously handed the rice bowl that was placed in front of Shen Wangshu to the zombie.
He looked at the small rice bowl in his large hand. His fingers were stiff and the veins were bulging. It was difficult for him to hold the slippery rice bowl, but he seemed quite satisfied. He imitated Ning's mother and brought the small rice bowl to Shen Wangshu's mouth.
He held the bowl steadily, seemingly tireless even as a zombie. As Shen Wangshu tentatively began eating from his hand, he moved the bowl closer to her. Seeing that she still didn't respond, the zombie suddenly became agitated. He roared angrily at the bowl, almost pouncing on Shen Wangshu in the next instant.
Shen Wangshu paused for a moment.
She tentatively rubbed her face against the zombie's fingers.
Just like when she rubbed against Ning's mother earlier.
The roar immediately ceased.
Ah Xuan regained his composure. He watched with satisfaction as his food rubbed against his fingers, just as it had before. Although he felt nothing, he felt something slowly softening inside his empty body.
He watched critically as Shen Wangshu gently bit his hand, finding her far more docile than she had been in front of Ning's mother, and only then was he satisfied. Shen Wangshu was utterly dumbfounded, looking at this zombie who had the appearance of an adult man but seemed to have become childish, not knowing what to do.
This meal was very difficult for her.
She finished her meal, but Ah Xuan refused to put down her bowl.
It was only after Shen Wangshu gently kissed his cheek that he allowed Ning's mother to take the bowl away from his hand.
Ning's mother went to wash the dishes. For some reason, she felt that this zombie was like an animal marking its territory. Even though Ah Xuan was a dangerous zombie, Ning's mother couldn't bring herself to plot to kill him completely. She turned to look at the two children sitting together. The beautiful girl was sitting on the black-haired man's lap, her snow-white hand outstretched, smiling as she circled his dark hair, as if playing. The tall man lowered his head, obediently letting her play with his hair.
What a blissful scene it would be if one were a human and the other a zombie.
Ning's mother wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and went to do housework.
Ning's father didn't move. He moved a small television from the house and placed it inside. Although the television still had a signal, many channels were no longer working. Only the country's largest television station was broadcasting on a loop warnings to people not to approach strange-looking individuals, how to protect themselves at home, how to make simple weapons, and what essential supplies to stockpile.
He watched for a while, then sighed and turned on the home security TV channel.
There are many security cameras outside the Ning family villa, which were originally for security purposes, but have now become important eyes and ears.
Upon opening it, one is greeted by a glaring sight of blood and corpses.
The horrific scene contrasted sharply with the warmth inside the small house.
Looking at the jumbled mess of cars outside his villa, the blood seeping from them, and the bewildered, bloodied figures wandering aimlessly outside, a somber expression crept across Ning's face. He saw many familiar faces among them, old friends with whom he had once collaborated. This villa district was once home to many successful people, but now they were either zombies or food for them.
There are very few families as lucky as theirs.
"Wait." Shen Wangshu was stroking Ah Xuan's big head, watching him tap his fingers with his sharp teeth, when he turned his head and suddenly called out.
She squinted at the sudden flash of light in the high-definition lens.
"What is that?" she asked softly.
But she already knew the answer in her heart.
While the initial zombies were easily defeated, they began to evolve over time. They became more agile, stronger, and some even developed rudimentary cognitive abilities. Furthermore, crystalline structures appeared in their brains; these crystals, known as nuclei, were found to be filled with energy.
