Chapter 196 Mysterious Background (Part 4)

It was late at night, and most people had already fallen asleep, leaving only a few on watch. Xiang Wan woke Feng Yulian and told her that they could start looking for medicine.

"Okay, Captain Zhao, you wait here. I'll be right back once I find the medicine."

"Go ahead, and be careful in everything you do."

Feng Yulian climbed out the window, and once her figure disappeared outside, Xiang Wan got up and also climbed over the wall.

The pale moonlight shone down, illuminating several rooms in her line of sight, their lights all off, the faint sound of snoring drifting through the air. She followed the wall, dodging a few missteps, until she reached the tallest building in the entire courtyard. The first-floor doors were locked. Xiang Wan gripped the window frame, and with a mighty leap, she reached the second-floor railing. Unable to use her right hand, her left was strong enough to hold onto the railing, and she vaulted over into the second-floor corridor.

There were three rooms on the second floor. At the door of one of the rooms, two people were standing guard, one on each side. Xiang Wan quietly hid in a corner and took out a dagger for defense.

"We're exhausted. We're the only two unlucky ones who were dragged here to keep watch. What's so great about keeping watch as grown men?"

"Shh, keep your voice down. If the people inside hear you, you'll be in big trouble."

"Tch, everyone's asleep, who cares about us?"

"Are you out of your mind? You know what kind of methods our boss has. Just keep watch properly, and you'll probably be free tomorrow."

"Liu Cheng, tell me, what's the point of having so many kids around every day?"

"Why do you care so much? It's enough for us to eat, drink, and live a carefree life. Isn't that enough to shut you up?"

"I'm just curious. Our boss always acts so mysterious around this time of year. I wonder what he's up to."

"Come on, boss hasn't had enough of that beauty from last time."

"Tsk tsk, that's really something, but compared to the two we surrounded today, they're like chickens compared to phoenixes."

"I'm content with a little soup and broth. I couldn't handle something so strong."

"Hahaha, look at you, you coward."

Judging from their tone, they don't usually keep watch at night, but they are doing so now, which means there is something important or someone important in the room.

Xiang Wan quietly moved towards the window next to her, gently pried open a corner with her dagger, and slipped inside. She deliberately made a noise as she closed the window.

"You stay here, I'll go check."

"Go quickly and come back quickly."

A guard, carrying a gun, walked toward where Xiang Wan was. He looked around but didn't see anyone. Just as he was about to go back, Xiang Wan had already opened the window behind him, covered his mouth with one hand, and dragged him into the room before he could make a sound. She then slit his throat with a dagger.

Having dealt with one, Xiang Wan changed out of his clothes and put them on, then turned around, opened the door, and walked towards the remaining guard.

"Hey, why did you take so long? Did you go off to have some fun somewhere?"

Xiang Wan didn't speak, but shook her head, gesturing for him to look downstairs. The guard, unsuspecting, looked down the railing. Xiang Wan took out a dagger, patted his right shoulder, and as he turned his head, she stabbed him, ending his life and dragging him to the next room.

The house they were guarding remained silent. She took out a wire from her pocket, and relying on her memory, fiddled with it a few times before unlocking it. She gently pushed the door open, slipped to the side, and closed it behind her.

The room wasn't large; there was a bookshelf on the left and a bed on the right, where someone was lying asleep. Xiang Wan waited quietly for a while, listening to the long, steady breathing, and knew that the person on the bed hadn't woken up.

Who are these people who need to be watched over even when they're sleeping? Xiang Wan wanted to see what kind of people were staying in this place. If they weren't good people, she might as well get rid of them; that would be doing a good deed.

She slowly approached, delivering a chop to the neck, but was dodged. Then she heard a whoosh of wind beside her ear. Instinctively, she dodged again, but her injured hand was grabbed, and she was pulled down onto the bed in pain. Quickly rolling over, Xiang Wan raised her leg to kick, but was firmly pinned down. Unwilling to be captured, Xiang Wan reached for her dagger at her waist. Just as she touched the hilt, a hand twisted it behind her back, and then her body was flipped over, her other hand also twisted behind her back.

The man pressed his entire body against her, rendering her unable to move. In desperation, she jerked her head back, hitting the man squarely on the nose. The man cried out in pain, but didn't let go; instead, he tightened his grip on her even more.

"Let go!"

Xiang Wan's wound reopened, and the tight position made it difficult for her to speak. Her deep voice came out in a growl from her throat, causing her vocal cords to ache from the friction.

"In the dead of night, someone throws themselves at you. Should you let them go or not?"

The voice above her was mocking and sarcastic. As it spoke, Xiang Wan's head was pressed tightly against the blanket, making her feel like she was suffocating. She shook herself violently, finally managing to breathe through a crack.

"Who are you?"

"Heh, how amusing. You sneaked into my residence and actually asked who I am? Tsk tsk, each generation is worse than the last. Those old fogies, their eyesight is failing, they sent an idiot. Do they have no one else to rely on, or do they look down on me?"

“Big brother, listen to me,” Xiang Wan swallowed hard and said, “I wasn’t sent by them. I just happened to be passing by and wanted to find something to eat.”

Am I stupid?

"No, no, you're the smartest, so just treat me like a fart and let me go."

"Pfft, a fart has that much force, enough to break my nose?"

"Brother, I really didn't mean it. If you mind, I'll pay for your plastic surgery, and I guarantee you'll look even better than before."

"He may not be the brightest, but he's quick-witted."

"I'm serious, brother. Look, I can't run away, and my arm is injured. Let me go, and I'll bring you tea and water and apologize, how about that?"

“I thought,” the man lowered his head and whispered in Xiang Wan’s ear, “that you’re not bad at warming my bed.”

Damn, she'd run into a pervert! Xiang Wan got goosebumps all over and felt incredibly uncomfortable. To make matters worse, the man was blowing air into her ear, making her feel so nauseous she almost threw up.

"Brother, don't be impulsive! I'm extremely ugly, the kind of ugly that makes you lose your appetite. I also have no breasts, no butt, no figure, and no charm. You'll suffer a great loss."

"Oh? You're so considerate of me?"

"Really, I never look in the mirror. If I ever do, I won't be able to eat all day. For your safety, it's best to stay as far away from me as possible."

"Oh? I was going to let you go, but after hearing what you said, I'm a little curious. What kind of appearance would make someone lose their appetite?"

Holy crap, this is a disaster. Xiang Wan was practically spitting blood; no matter how much she tried to reason with him, he remained unmoved. Hadn't she hit a nerve?
