"Squeak—, squeak—, squeak squeak squeak—!"
Before Xiang Wan even reached the cave entrance, she heard the screams of countless giant rats scattering and fleeing. This was followed by deafening meows from cats and the chilling sounds of night owls.
Rats aren't the only ones that come out to forage at night.
Xiang Wan's heart sank.
Intuition told her that even if she ran to Grylls, they would still be doomed.
This situation is truly despairing.
All animals are dozens or even hundreds of times larger than humans. In their eyes, humans are like ants, not even enough to fill a tooth gap.
If these animals can mutate, then what about ants?
Two legs could never match the speed of four legs of a giant rat, larger than an elephant. Now, it was too late to return to the vent of creation.
Without hesitation, Xiang Wan found a crack in the wall of the mouse hole, crawled inside, and then used her hands to pull down the soil on both sides of the crack, partially covering herself with the soil.
As soon as they finished doing this, they felt the earth tremble, and one after another, the giant rats rushed into their burrows.
"Meow~~"
"Squeak, squeak, squeak!"
"Coo coo coo mi~~"
"Hiss, hiss~~"
"Gigela~~"
Different sounds bombarded her eardrums, making Xiang Wan's head feel like it was about to explode.
They're all big ones!
They're all nocturnal animals!
They're all carnivores!
She can't afford to offend any of them!
With a whooshing sound, the soil on the cave walls kept sliding down.
Xiang Wan squeezed hard into the gap, and when she couldn't squeeze any further, her hands and feet touched something warm. A small hand reached out and grabbed her arm.
It's that little boy!
Xiang Wan grabbed his wrist with her other hand, and neither of them moved.
Above the burrow entrance, the commotion grew louder; it seemed the animals were tearing at each other. Their fight wasn't directly above the burrow entrance. Even so, the collapsed soil above the mouse burrow was enough to completely bury the gap where Xiang Wan and the little boy were hiding.
"Lassie, what should we do now?"
The little boy's voice was choked with emotion and trembling.
"wait!"
With their small, frail bodies, there's nothing they can do. What can they do besides wait?
“My name is George, Grylls, he, he has already…”
"Shh!"
This outcome was expected, and it's fortunate that one of them survived.
Xiang Wan never regretted bringing them here. Life and death are preordained, wealth and honor are determined by fate, and no one can blame anyone else. What they encountered was not even the worst situation.
On the other side of the human settlement, it had long become the domain of giant animals. The animals that roamed over here were not a large force. Yet, this small group, once mobilized, almost completely destroyed all the buildings, leaving very few human survivors.
The place where Grylls and his group were hiding had been designated as their exclusive territory by the lizards a few days ago. If Xiang Wan hadn't lured the centipede there, they would probably have either been guarded by the lizards and waited to die, or starved to death—the outcome would have been the same.
In the previous life, the original owner was able to escape because she followed a few fearless individuals and stumbled upon another vent of creation. It was on the other side of the extinct human settlement, after all the giant animals had moved their battlefields.
Within a week, all the large animals would be focusing their attention here. This is because their hunting grounds are no longer limited to humans, but also include other giant animals.
Time passed slowly, and Xiang Wan's hunger had subsided.
George was hungry too, but he stubbornly refused to say a word. His stomach, however, was growling loudly.
Are you hungry?
I'm not hungry.
George's cheeks were flushed. At this moment, he dared not hold Xiang Wan back, for fear of being disliked and even more afraid of being abandoned.
Xiang Wan knew perfectly well what was going on. She squeezed his wrist with her hand and didn't say anything more.
After being buried in mud for most of the night, my body gradually began to feel hot.
Daylight broke.
The rat hole had collapsed most of the way, and the giant rat had already run to the depths of the cave.
After searching with his mental energy and finding no further sounds outside, Xiang Wan began digging with both his hands and feet.
It took an hour of struggle to finally emerge from the mouse hole.
Standing in the mountains and forests, looking up at the excessively bright sun, Xiang Wan shook her head and resignedly pulled George toward the human settlement that had been destroyed by those giant beasts.
There used to be some tall trees around, but after last night's disturbance, there are no plants left standing.
Along the way, there were signs of fighting everywhere, as well as bitten fur and congealed blood.
"Lassie, where are we going?" George asked somewhat anxiously.
He's still just a child, so it's normal for him to be scared.
"Find something to eat."
"Give it...give it back?"
"certainly."
Xiang Wan's resolute answer left George speechless.
In his eyes, escaping from the rat hole was already a miracle. If possible, he would never want to come back. But he was too small, and could do nothing but follow Xiang Wan.
"Three days, we just need to hold on for three days."
"???"
George's mind was full of questions, but he didn't ask any.
In such an environment, being a curious child is not a good thing; this is a lesson he learned from personal experience.
Standing once again in front of the various collapsed buildings, Xiang Wan could only rely on the system to search for a safe place and something to eat.
