Chapter 743 The Altar (Part 4)

"Senior brother, is there really a Cloud Dream Beast in this place? We've been searching for so long and haven't found a single trace. I suspect that kid is lying to us."

A long-haired woman dressed in a scarlet cloud-like dress walked along, wielding a nimble silver sword, chopping at the tangled branches of trees around her, her expression somewhat impatient.

“Let’s keep looking. Since that kid is here to sell information, he certainly wouldn’t lie. Otherwise, he would have been taken down long ago and wouldn’t be alive now. Besides,” the young man behind the woman glanced around and said in a low voice, “the Yunmeng Beast is a strange beast. If it were so easy for someone to find it, we wouldn’t be in the picture.”

"But..." The woman was about to say something when the man interrupted her.

Shh! Don't talk, I think I heard something.

Both of them stopped moving and even consciously slowed their breathing.

A gentle breeze rustled through the surrounding trees, their leaves whispering in the air.

"Crack!"

"Crackling!"

"Thump!"

A rock buried in the soil was stirred up and suddenly flew outwards a meter high before crashing heavily to the ground.

Immediately afterwards, a hand covered in mud reached out from inside, bringing with it a layer of dirt.

The arm had only extended halfway when it swung outwards in a wide arc, shoving all the surrounding dirt into the hole. Then it tossed out a red ball covered in fine hairs, which rolled into the nearby grass.

"Senior brother, this..."

The woman was not far away and had noticed the commotion, but dared not make any rash moves.

Legend has it that adult Yunmeng Beasts, apart from being fast runners, are not particularly strong, but they can trap Nascent Soul stage experts in dreams, triggering inner demons and destroying their years of cultivation.

Their cultivation levels were only at the third and fifth levels of the Qi Condensation stage, respectively. They were no match for a fully grown Cloud Dream Beast. They only dared to try because they had heard that the Cloud Dream Beast that had appeared here before was still a minor.

But this situation is quite unexpected.

The red, hairy creature was of unknown species and strength. Those inside the cave dared not use their divine sense to probe it. If it turned out to be a powerful expert, they would perish here.

As the two were still undecided, the person inside the cave first poked his head out, glanced around, pushed himself up with both hands, jumped to the ground, and quickly ran to the boulder that had been pushed aside first. He raised his hands and filled it into the cave entrance with a "thud," then ran up to it and stomped his feet hard.

A moment later, the boulder was seen to leap outwards violently before being pushed back down.

Then, a dense, gnawing sound came from underground.

"What are you all standing there for? If whatever comes out of the cave, we're all doomed!"

The speaker was none other than Xiang Wan, who was darting around in the cave to avoid being chased by the insects.

She didn't know how long she ran or where she ended up; she just kept going into any hole she could find.

Based on the color of the soil in the cave, Xiang Wan knew the exit was here, which was why she painstakingly pushed the boulder aside. This short delay allowed the insects to catch up.

Seeing that the boulder wouldn't hold for much longer, Xiang Wan was determined not to let the insects break through. Upon seeing two living people, she asked for their help without waiting for their consent.

The man and woman exchanged a glance, then took a step back in unison, as if to flee.

Xiang Wan was amused and annoyed, but said seriously, "There are golden flying insects in the cave, and thousands upon thousands of black insects. If you don't help, you won't be able to escape after they've eaten me up. Quickly find some big rocks and pile them up. Let's see how hard their teeth are!"

As they spoke, the commotion under the boulder grew louder, and Xiang Wan began to sweat.

These aren't insects, they're clearly rock-cutting machines! The powerful jaws are making a clattering sound, and the boulder is already sinking.

The two scanned Xiang Wan with their divine senses and were shocked to find that they could not see through her cultivation level.

The woman looked at the man, waiting for him to make a decision.

The man clenched his fists, shook his head at the woman, and walked towards a nearby pile of rocks.

Having cultivated before, moving stones was effortless for him, and he quickly piled up a small mountain at the cave entrance where he had emerged in the evening.

The gnawing sounds from underground hadn't stopped. Xiang Wan glanced at the two of them and said, "Which of you knows fireball magic? If we don't completely scare these things away, they'll come out sooner or later."

The woman stepped forward, made a hand seal, and a flame as thick as a wrist appeared out of thin air, drilling into the ground along the crack in the rock.

The creaking sound continued, as if there was some commotion underground. After about fifteen minutes, the noise stopped.

The woman stopped, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and stood pale-faced beside the man.

The insect was gone, and Xiang Wan breathed a sigh of relief. She stroked the red ball in her arms, and seeing that it still showed no signs of waking up, she squeezed it a few times before saying to the man and woman, "Thank you both for your help."

The dry, unambiguous sentence made the two of them frown.

Xiang Wan was covered in mud, and her clothes were tattered beyond recognition. If it weren't for the mud covering her, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she was running around naked.

The only thing that seemed normal was his eyes, clear, bright, and untouched by worldly concerns, like those of a peerless scion of a powerful family, sent out by his elders for trials. They had seen eyes like that many times before.

The man clasped his hands in a fist and asked, "Young lady, why did you emerge from the cave?"

He used his divine sense to check the other party's cultivation level. If her cultivation was higher than theirs, she couldn't possibly have failed to detect it. Yet, her politeness was so perplexing that he couldn't see through her. He had a vague suspicion that she possessed a magical artifact to conceal her aura. Usually, such artifacts were only crafted with the blood and sweat of family elders who held their descendants in high regard.
