Soon it will be time for Chen Shi to go home.
In the first year of his marriage with Song Jiajia, he told the village chief that he wanted to go home for the Chinese New Year and received a letter of introduction.
A mother worries when her son travels a thousand miles.
This was Song Jiajia's first time traveling far from home. Her mother arrived early in the morning, anxiously asking, "Jiajia, have you packed everything? Be careful on the road. Do you have enough money?"
Seeing her mother like this, Song Jiajia felt bad but still comforted her, "Mom, don't worry, everything is prepared. If all else fails, we still have Chen Shi."
Shen put his arm around Song Jiajia's shoulder and patted her gently to comfort her.
Then he said to Song's mother, "Mom, don't worry, with me here, I guarantee that Jiajia won't lose a single hair."
"Okay, I'll watch the house for you. You've finally come home, so stay and enjoy yourself for a few more days," Song's mother replied.
The breakfast prepared by Song's mother was exceptionally lavish. After the three of them finished eating, they took their food and went out.
When he went outside, he saw that a shed had been set up next to his house, and Deng Jie had become his neighbor.
They first rented Grandpa Niu's oxcart to get to town, then took a bus to the county, and then went through the ticket check and entered the station. After a lot of busy work, they finally sat down.
Shen Shi specially bought tickets for closer locations, so he sat next to Song Jiajia, while Grandpa Shen sat opposite them.
As soon as the old man sat down, he began to doze off against the back of the chair.
This was Song Jiajia's first time riding a train, and she found everything fascinating—how could a train carry so many people?
I sat in it again to test it out, and surprisingly, the cart didn't shake at all! Riding in Grandpa Niu's oxcart always feels like you're flying.
Seeing Song Jiajia acting like a child, Shen Shi reached out and ruffled her hair. "You're acting like a little kid. Are you feeling unwell?"
The train is even less ventilated and smells worse than the bus. Every time I ride it, it feels like an ordeal.
Song Jiajia squinted and smiled happily, "No! Sitting here is just like sitting in our living room at home." She even swung her legs back and forth.
Touched by Song Jiajia's innocent smile, Shen Shi also felt much more relaxed.
An hour or two later, it was time to eat.
Shen Shi patted the old man and said, "Grandpa, wake up, it's time to eat."
"I only dozed off for a bit and didn't fall asleep." The old man opened his eyes and looked completely dazed, but he still stubbornly insisted.
Shen Shi nodded. "Okay, I wasn't asleep."
Actually, he didn't quite understand. If you're asleep, you're asleep. What's the point of denying it?
Song's mother prepared a lot of food in the morning for them to take with them on the road.
Chen took a few eggs, some pancakes, and a small jar of pickled vegetables, and then went to get some hot water.
The three of them had a simple meal.
It takes nearly 30 hours to get to his home from here, and Shen Shi and Song Jiajia have been relying on each other.
We finally arrived in Haishi on the afternoon of the second day.
When she stood up, her legs were numb. The usually lively Song Jiajia was listless and looked so pitiful.
Shen Shi gently stroked Song Jiajia's hand while holding the old man's hand with his other hand, and followed the crowd off the bus.
Before leaving the station, he wrote to his parents to tell them his return date, and as soon as he got off the train, he searched everywhere for them. He searched for a long time but couldn't find them.
Could it be that he didn't come?
His parents have always been people who care a lot about their image, so was it really necessary for them to go to such extremes?
Just as he was thinking this, his older brother's face suddenly appeared in front of him.
Brother Shen greeted them warmly: "Grandpa, Second Brother, you're back! This must be your wife! I'm Shen Shi's older brother, Shen Mu."
Because she loves Shen Shi's family, Song Jiajia responded warmly, "Hello, big brother, my name is Song Jiajia. Thank you for making the trip in this cold weather."
The second son's wife is quite good-looking and speaks in a pleasant way, it's just a pity she's a country girl.
Before Brother Shen could reply, his grandfather shouted, "Where are your parents? Why didn't they come!"
The old man was a kind old man in front of Shen Shi, but in front of his other children and grandchildren, he was a stern-faced Guan Gong, and no one in the family was afraid of him.
Upon hearing the old man's words, Brother Shen seemed to get angry and quickly explained, "Dad is at work and can't take leave, but Mom specially took leave to cook a big table of dishes and is waiting at home. It's cold outside, let's hurry home."
After finishing, he hurriedly urged the old man to move on.
Shen Shi and Song Jiajia both understood that his family was dissatisfied with them; otherwise, they would have at least come to greet their daughter-in-law on her first visit.
Although Shen Shi was somewhat prepared, he still felt sorry for Song Jiajia.
A little girl took a 30-hour train ride to a strange place with him, but was not welcomed by his family.
I was just about to tell Song Jiajia that we weren't going.
Then Song Jiajia said gently, "Let's go." After saying that, she saw that Chen Shi didn't move, so she shook his arm again.
Looking into Song Jiajia's serene eyes, Shen Shi nodded.
Seeing that the two of them insisted on going, the old man went along with them. His house was not far from the station, and the four of them arrived at their destination in about ten minutes.
Shen Shi's family lived in the steel factory's residential area, which was full of courtyard houses, with several families living in one courtyard.
As soon as he entered the gate, the people in the courtyard looked over. "The second son of the Shen family is back. What's this?" Aunt Liu asked first.
It seemed his parents hadn't told anyone about his marriage. "This is my wife. I brought her to wish my parents a Happy New Year," Shen Shi quickly said.
"Oh, when did you get married?" Everyone in the courtyard was surprised.
"Just half a month ago, I, as her grandfather, went all the way to propose marriage to her, but my granddaughter-in-law is truly a wonderful girl," Old Master Shen said first.
