Shi Lan rubbed her neck and slowly sat up from the ground.
Jiang Yunhuai was too lazy to wait for her to get up, so he reached out to help her.
"No need," Shi Lan quickly raised her slightly dusty fingers to block his large hand, and continued to slowly work on her own.
Jiang Yunhuai thought about what happened that night and didn't care about her rejection.
After waiting for the girl to stagger to her feet, Jiang Yunhuai carefully tugged at the hem of her clothes and pulled her back as she leaned back.
Shi Lan nodded politely, then rubbed her slightly sore neck again, saying, "You're being too rough."
Jiang Yunhuai remained silent, his two tiger-like eyes fixed on her, as if trying to see through her skin to her inner soul.
Shi Lan walked to a chair and sat down, glancing up at his scrutinizing gaze.
"Who are you?"
Jiang Yunhuai could confirm that this was the person who gave him the sachet, but she was not the second daughter of the Shi family.
Shi Lan said, "I am here to save your life on someone's behalf."
Jiang Yunhuai stepped forward and looked down at him, asking, "Where is Lan'er? Where is she?"
Shi Lan pursed her lips, a hint of sorrow appearing between her brows.
Jiang Yunhuai's attention was entirely on her, and Shi Lan's expression naturally did not escape his notice.
A sudden sense of foreboding arose in Jiang Yunhuai's heart. His limbs, which could leap onto a horse and take a man's head from a hundred feet away, were now so weak that they could not support his body at all.
Jiang Yunhuai staggered a few steps and fell heavily against the door panel.
After a long while, he finally found his voice and whispered, "She's gone?"
Shi Lan sighed softly, wanting to comfort him, but not knowing where to begin.
Jiang Yunhuai's Adam's apple bobbed rapidly as he suppressed the grief that welled up within him, and he said in a deep voice, "Did she send you here?"
Shi Lan nodded and said, "That's right. You probably already know why. I think you know what to do next, right?"
"That person is..."
“She is a wandering ghost who has usurped the nest; she was originally Zhou Yuan’s wife,” Shi Lan said, her eyes turning icy as she thought of the foolish things Wang had done.
The thought that such a vile person was inside Lan'er's body made Jiang Yunhuai frown in disgust. He asked, "How do we get rid of her?"
Shi Lan shook her head, "Her soul has already merged with this body to a large extent, so it would be very difficult to expel it."
Jiang Yunhuai pondered for a moment and said, "I know a high-ranking monk who might have a solution."
Shi Lan shook her head and said, "Even if we have to expel them, there's no rush. The most important thing right now is to clarify the grain embezzlement case and make those people receive the punishment they deserve."
When it came to court affairs, Jiang Yunhuai calmed down a bit. Thinking of the scene he had just witnessed, he straightened his pine-like back, snorted coldly, and said, "Don't worry, I have already made progress on the grain embezzlement case. Wang Pinchuan is nothing more than a grasshopper in autumn. As for that ignorant, greedy, and hypocritical petty official, I will make sure he lives a life of regret."
Jiang Yunhuai grinned bloodthirstyly.
Shi Lan smiled slightly and nodded, saying, "That would be best."
After finishing their discussion, Jiang Yunhuai glanced at the light streaming into the room and realized it was getting late. He said, "It's getting late. Should I take you back to the Shi residence, or..."
"If I stay here, you should be able to put their minds at ease, right? They are still your parents-in-law."
Jiang Yunhuai nodded and said solemnly, "I misunderstood Lan'er before. Let's put the matter of annulment on that note. No matter what Lan'er does in the future, they will all be my father-in-law and mother-in-law."
Shi Lan nodded with satisfaction. In the end, Jiang Yunhuai was loyal and righteous, and the original owner's efforts for him were not in vain.
A slight fluctuation suddenly appeared in Shi Lan's soul, and she was slightly dazed.
Jiang Yunhuai noticed her unusual behavior and quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
Shi Lan shook her head and said, "She should be out soon."
Jiang Yunhuai was extremely anxious. Forgetting his manners, he hurriedly asked, even though he knew the chances were slim, he still held onto a sliver of hope: "If I drive Wang Shi out, will Lan'er really not be able to come back?"
Shi Lan remained silent, lost in thought.
Jiang Yunhuai slumped his shoulders in disappointment and walked out with heavy steps.
Shi Lan couldn't bear it either, but could only sigh and slump over the table.
The door was locked tightly from the outside. The girl, who had been lying on the table, got up and looked around in a panic. Finding no one in the room, she rushed to the door, pulled it open, and found it locked. She pounded on the door, shouting, "Open the door! Open the door quickly! I'm still inside!"
There was complete silence outside the door, except for the chirping of birds returning to their nests under the eaves, which seemed to be their response to her.
After waiting for a while, Wang saw that no one answered the door, so she rushed to the side room to open the window, only to find that the window had been sealed shut from the outside.
Wang hurriedly brought her face close to the fine gauze covering the window frame, peering out through the hazy fabric.
In the vast courtyard, apart from a few bees that landed on the flower stamens, there was nothing else moving about.
Wang tore a hole in the window screen and reached out to "feel" it. The gap in the window frame was small, and she could only stick out two or three fingers.
After groping around for a while, she finally touched something cold, and with a slight touch, it made a metallic clanging sound.
Wang screamed and yelled in despair for a while, but it was still eerily quiet outside. Wang sat down on the ground, tears welling up in her eyes.
My husband is right. Jiang Yunhuai won't kill her, but he's keeping her under house arrest here.
Wang carefully recalled the scene when she got on the bus, and was horrified to find that there was no one on the street when she got on.
In other words, no one except Zhou Yuan knew that she had gotten into the Jianchang Earl's carriage.
