Shi Lan looked up blankly, and for a moment she wondered if there was something wrong with her ears.
The butler felt even more distressed when he saw her wide-eyed, innocent-looking face. He wondered if this girl, who knew nothing, could take good care of the young master, who was still injured. Yet, the young master had ordered this girl to go over there, and all his worries had been in vain.
The butler coughed loudly, bringing Shi Lan, whose soul had seemingly wandered off somewhere, back to reality. He said with a serious expression, "Young Master is not in good health. You must take good care of him."
Shi Lan nodded blankly.
The housekeeper glanced at her several times with suspicion, then walked away angrily with his hands behind his back.
Looking at his obviously angry back, Shi Lan was completely baffled, unable to figure out who he was arguing with.
Around noon, Shi Lan went up to the third floor and knocked on the door with its mahogany carvings.
There was no sound from inside the door. Shi Lan paused for a moment, then knocked again, but still there was no response.
Shi Lan gently pushed the door open and found that it was only slightly ajar.
She pushed open the door, and out of politeness, she simply stood there and said loudly, "Young Master, it's lunchtime."
The room was very quiet, probably because the soundproofing was so good. As soon as Shi Lan finished speaking, the room returned to silence.
Shi Lan took two steps forward, past the landscape screen at the entrance, ignoring the antique decorations, and found that the huge house was empty.
Shi Lan blinked, then subconsciously turned to leave.
A soft click came from nearby. Shi Lan turned her head and caught a glimpse of a half-naked man pushing open a hidden door and putting on clothes as he walked.
Shi Lan hurriedly turned around, her face flushing rapidly, and she secretly regretted entering without invitation.
The man looked up, seemingly only then noticing the uninvited guest in the room. Seeing the figure with its back to him, the man smiled slightly, deliberately loosened the buttons he had just fastened, and slumped weakly into a chair.
"come over."
The man's voice was deep and slightly hoarse, and sounded very familiar.
Shi Lan blinked suspiciously, wondering if there was something wrong with her hearing, because everyone sounded like Ning Yuze's voice.
Seeing that she didn't move, the man couldn't help but chuckle softly.
Shi Lan's ears twitched slightly. The laughter was so familiar that she could hardly forget it.
Shi Lan turned around abruptly, staring directly at the man sitting on the soft bench. After a two-second pause, she whispered, "Ning Yuze, it really is you."
Ning Yuze nodded and said, "Sorry, I didn't have time to tell you yesterday."
Shi Lan's cheeks suddenly flushed red. In an instant, she realized the irrationality of her coming here for the interview. After a long silence, she said, "I'm here to work, isn't it because of you?"
Ning Yuze shook his head, "How could that be? Recruitment is always handled by the housekeeper; I don't deal with these things."
Shi Lan pursed her lips, not quite believing it, but she had no concrete evidence to prove that it was definitely him who helped her. However, she had already received a lot of help from him, and compared with the other things he had done, introducing her to a job was just a small favor.
"You came here because you need something?"
Although he was certain that the housekeeper wouldn't reveal that he had deliberately brought her in, he didn't want to face Shi Lan's suspicious gaze. Having enjoyed her stunned and bewildered expression enough, he began to change the subject.
Shi Lan was so shocked that her brain cells were not enough to process it, so she didn't think much and just paused for a moment before replying, "It's time to eat, I'll come and call you to eat."
Ning Yuze pretended to be weak and leaned against the soft backrest, saying, "I'm not going down like this. Just bring the food up."
Shi Lan's gaze shifted to his waist, where the buttons were not yet fastened and there was gauze wrapped around it, which looked like it had been changed.
Thinking about the high fever she had last night, Shi Lan felt a little sorry for her and thought that it was really best to avoid moving around too much with such an injury.
Without saying a word, she turned and left, thus missing the faint smile on Ning Yuze's lips.
After picking up my food at the restaurant, I ran into Wen Jiao, who was beaming with excitement.
Upon seeing Shi Lan, she rushed over and grabbed him, saying, "I heard you're in charge of serving the young master. How is it? Isn't he especially handsome?"
Shi Lan moved her arm but couldn't shake off her hand. She knew that Shi Lan wouldn't let her go unless her curiosity was satisfied.
"He's alright, just an ordinary person." For some reason, seeing Wen Jiao's interest in Ning Zeyu made Shi Lan feel a little uncomfortable. However, she told herself that it was because she was worried about evil spirits. Isn't there a saying that once bitten by a snake, twice shy? She was like that now.
Wen Jiao was somewhat disappointed by this answer. Shi Lan took a step to leave, but Wen Jiao quickly grabbed her and asked suspiciously, "How could it be an ordinary person? Everyone says the young master is exceptionally handsome. Could it be that your taste is different from everyone else's?"
Shi Lan glanced at her and said, "Anyway, I think he's just an ordinary person. If you don't believe me, go and see for yourself."
Wen Jiao pouted. If she could go see it, would she still be asking so eagerly?
"How about you secretly take a picture and send it to me, and I'll help you judge your taste? What do you say?"
Shi Lan gave a forced smile and said, "It's not that great. If I did that and the young master found out, I might lose my job. Would you pay me such a high salary then?"
Shi Lan shook her arm again and glanced at her sideways, saying, "The young master is waiting for me to bring him his meal. If we keep chatting, the food will get cold."
Although Wen Jiao was a sucker for good looks, she knew what was important. Reluctantly, she let go of her hand, but looking at her back, she still wanted to make one last desperate attempt, "How about you take a picture of a distant view for me to see?"
Shi Lan smiled slightly, but without turning around, she went straight upstairs.
Turning the corner of the corridor and going up the stairs, Shi Lan's gaze fell on the painting hanging by the stairs. She had never understood why the young master would paint such a murderous painting before, but now she understood a little. Ning Zeyu's background must be quite extraordinary, given that he was willing to resort to violence over a business deal and yet still had such a large empire.
Passing the paintings and the small living room in the corridor, Shi Lan placed the insulated box on a mahogany square table and turned to knock on the door.
The door opened silently, and Ning Zeyu walked out from inside.
Shi Lan awkwardly withdrew her hand and said, "The food is here, eat it while it's hot." As she spoke, she quickly walked to the table, opened the insulated box, and unpacked the layers of the sealed box.
Ning Zeyu sat upright at the table, watching Shi Lan prepare to leave.
Where are you going?
Shi Lan was taken aback, and the words popped out without her thinking: "I'm going to eat."
Ning Zeyu raised his chin, gesturing to the extra pair of chopsticks, and said, "Your food is here."
Shi Lan blinked. Was he planning to eat with her? But the housekeeper hadn't said anything. If she did, would he dock her pay?
Perhaps because the original owner was burdened with debt, Shi Lan now always considers things from a money perspective.
Ning Yuze stunned her, frowning unhappily. "What? Are you trying to distance yourself from me?"
