Shi Lan rushed to the bedside and shook him, "Hey, wake up, wake up."
Ning Yuze opened his eyes groggily, still seemingly not quite conscious. When he saw Shi Lan, he instinctively waved his hand. Shi Lan didn't know what he meant, so she grabbed his hand and noticed that it was burning hot. She couldn't help but anxiously say, "Get up quickly, I'll take you to the hospital."
Ning Yuze stared at her for a moment, seemingly recognizing her. His chapped lips moved slightly, and he whispered, "You can't go."
Shi Lan panicked when she heard this. He looked like he had a fever caused by a wound infection. What if he got seriously ill if he didn't go to the hospital?
Ning Yuze blinked weakly and said, "It's okay, just hang in there and it'll pass."
Shi Lan's eyes instantly reddened. The dignified Haoze God had always been high and mighty. When had he ever suffered like this because of such a minor illness? If it weren't for her, he wouldn't have suffered like this.
Shi Lan felt extremely guilty.
Seeing the tears in her eyes, Ning Yuze mistakenly thought she was frightened and said, "Don't worry, you'll be fine after taking some medicine."
Shi Lan responded sullenly, poured a glass of warm water, and fed him a bunch of fever reducers and anti-inflammatory drugs. After he drank them, she poured some cold water, soaked a towel in it, placed it on his head, and then poured some unused alcohol to wipe his palms and soles.
The scorching heat made Ning Yuze drift off into a daze. Shi Lan carefully put his hands and feet back under the covers, tucked the corners of the blankets in, and gently replaced the towel on his head that was no longer damp with cold.
She worked until nearly midnight, and only after confirming that his fever had finally subsided did Shi Lan feel relieved.
Relaxing, she realized that her back was soaked with sweat from all the work. After cleaning herself up in the bathroom, she collapsed onto the sofa, exhausted, and fell asleep as soon as she closed her eyes.
When I opened my eyes again, it was already bright daylight, but the bed was empty.
Shi Lan was stunned for a moment before she stood up in a daze and looked around blankly. She belatedly realized that she had been fooled by Ning Zeyu again.
Shi Lan angrily punched the pillow, regretting that she shouldn't have been so soft-hearted. She should have taken advantage of his delirium and made a direct attack. Then he might have already regained consciousness by now.
After a few minutes of self-loathing and venting, Shi Lan rubbed her face vigorously, trying to comfort herself. If he could come to see her once, he could come twice. As long as she was patient, she would eventually wait for him.
Shi Lan clenched her fists tightly; she refused to believe that he could escape her grasp next time.
After a quick wash, Shi Lan pedaled her bike furiously all the way. By the time she saw the mansion, most of the pent-up frustration in her heart had dissipated.
After changing into her work clothes, Shi Lan stood in front of the mirror and styled her hair. Wen Jiao came in from outside the door, saw Shi Lan, and hurriedly leaned over with a mysterious look on her face, "Do you know? The young master is back."
Shi Lan turned her head to look at her, "How did you know?"
Wen Jiao pursed her lips and said, "It's obvious at a glance. The housekeeper just had Shui Qin prepare a lot of things and take them upstairs."
Shi Lan turned her head and used her fingers to gather the stray hairs at her temples upwards.
Seeing that Shi Lan ignored her, Wen Jiao reached out and tugged at her, "You haven't met the young master yet, have you?"
Shi Lan glanced sideways and saw that she was engrossed in conversation and wouldn't let her go anytime soon, so she simply lowered her hand and said, "No," then asked, "Have you seen her?"
Wen Jiao shook her head, "I heard about it when I was at the old house, but I've never seen it. I thought I'd see it when I got here, but it seems like I'm out of luck."
She moved a few steps closer and whispered, "I heard that the young master is incredibly handsome, several times more handsome than that popular guy. I wonder if it's true."
Shi Lan chuckled and said, "Anyway, the young master has already moved in, so it's only a matter of time before you want to see him."
Wen Jiao sighed and said, "That's true, but I think the butler intends to serve the young master himself, so we won't be of any use."
Shi Lan laughed and said, "He'll come down for dinner eventually, right? You can sneak over and catch a glimpse of him then."
Wen Jiao thought about it again and agreed. She immediately clenched her fist and said with a fighting spirit, "Okay, let's take advantage of that time to go and find out what's going on."
Shi Lan was speechless. She was the one who wanted to see the handsome guy, so why did she have to drag her along?
Seeing her expression, Wen Jiao quickly grabbed her arm and shook it, "Oh, Shi Lan, please help me. You keep watch for me, and I'll cover for you next time you're late."
Shi Lan was speechless. She had never been late for a single day since she started working here, okay? And she was even covering for her.
Wen Jiao knew that her empty promise was a bit unreliable, but she really didn't have a good candidate to help her. Shui Qin was always steady and would never agree to her sneaking over to spy on the young master. Only Shi Lan was gentle and easy to talk to, and could help her with this favor.
"Okay, Shi Lan, I'll treat you to dinner when I get paid."
Shi Lan glanced at her sideways, "Can the food outside be as good as what the chefs here make?"
Wen Jiao's face fell as she said, "Then tell me what you want. As long as it's within my means, I'll give it to you."
Shi Lan shook her head helplessly and said, "Just this once, and don't let it happen again."
Wen Jiao immediately smiled broadly and nodded her head like a chick pecking at rice, "Okay, okay, I'll listen to you."
After saying that, she grabbed Shi Lan's arm and pushed her out the door.
They had only taken two steps, and before they could even go to the servants' quarters to get the tools for cleaning the house, they heard the butler's authoritative and aged voice coming from the side corridor, "Shi Lan, come here for a moment."
The two turned around at the same time. The butler was standing in the hall with his hands behind his back, and his face looked rather unpleasant.
The two of them stiffened. Wen Jiao released Shi Lan, gave her a "good luck" look, and then turned and slipped away.
After thinking it over carefully, Shi Lan confirmed that she hadn't done anything wrong before resting, which made her feel a little more at ease.
The butler scrutinized the young girl, who was just beginning to blossom, and couldn't understand what the young master saw in her.
In terms of looks and family background, there are plenty of people better than her who can be found all the way to the lawn outside. Her character is slightly better, but that's about it. Young Master probably wouldn't choose her as the future matriarch of the Ning family just because of that.
The old steward secretly pondered to himself.
Shi Lan noticed the butler's deep gaze and silent demeanor, which made her heart pound.
Could it be that he has changed his mind about me getting an advance on my salary?
But she had already spent the money, and if the housekeeper said no, she wouldn't have the money to pay him back.
The housekeeper saw that she had her eyes half-closed and was not speaking, and sighed inwardly.
It's rare for the young master to care about someone, so it's best for this old man not to get stuck in the middle.
You should know that the young master came back today, right?
Shi Lan nodded silently, knowing that the housekeeper should have guessed that Wen Jiao would tell her this news.
"Young Master will be staying here for a while, and you will be in charge of all his daily needs."
