"Ring! Ring..." The autumn morning sun at 10 a.m. wasn't too strong, but it wasn't gentle either, shining on people for a long time. The crisp sound of bicycle bells echoed continuously on the tree-lined path.
Xie Ming was covered in sweat, but he still walked forward steadily. He unconsciously weighed the person on his back and was sure that the person weighed no less than 80 pounds.
Looking at the large, bright red characters on the surrounding walls, he realized he had traveled to the 1970s or 80s.
He had been to these eras many times, but he didn't know which world he had come to this time. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and finished organizing his memories in less than five steps.
So this is where we've come from! He clicked his tongue, tilted his body, threw the person on top of him to the ground, and walked away, completely ignoring the woman who was lying on the ground crying out "Ouch, ouch!"
"Xie Ming, come back here! What's wrong with you?" The girl lying on the ground didn't react at first. She stood there dumbfounded for a while before she realized that her second brother had abandoned her.
"Xie Ming, Xie Ming..."
Once she saw that he had walked away, she quickly stood up and chased after him, trying to grab Xie Ming's sleeve.
"Snap—"
Xie Ming raised his hand and slapped her across the face. He didn't distinguish between men and women, only between good people and scoundrels. After hitting her, he immediately wiped his hands on the hem of his clothes: "Xie Chunhua, how shameless! A grown woman like you expecting a man to carry you in public!"
The eyes of everyone around immediately lit up and they all turned to look in their direction.
"You're my own brother! What nonsense are you talking about!" Xie Chunhua was anxious. She was already 14 years old and understood the importance of reputation very well.
"Brother? How come you have such a big face? Look at me, where do you resemble me? Is it your mouth or your eyes!" Xie Ming looks like his biological mother, but he doesn't really look like his nominal "parents and siblings".
Xie Chunhua was clean and pretty, but she paled in comparison to Xie Ming.
"Then, then, then, it was you who acted like a hooligan!" Xie Chunhua's eyes darted away as she realized something, and she immediately lost her composure, wanting only to throw the blame on Xie Ming.
Xie Ming could tell from her guilty expression that this person probably knew about his background as well, which explained why she was so ruthless in sucking his blood.
“You’re being a pervert! Didn’t you say you twisted your ankle and couldn’t walk? I carried you all the way from Dagang Village to the town. How can you be a pervert now? The entire village of Dagang can testify to that.”
"I...yes! I twisted my ankle! If you don't carry me, who will?"
"You're shameless!" Xie Ming stared disdainfully at her legs as she walked with ease.
Xie Chunhua then realized she had been tricked. Xie Ming had never said she was having an improper relationship; he wanted to tell everyone she was a lazy bum.
"Young lady, it's more than ten miles from Dagang Village to the town. Making people go through all this trouble isn't the way to do things." An elderly woman felt the young woman was really going too far, making someone carry her such a long distance when she has perfectly good legs. If she were the one being taken advantage of, she wouldn't be satisfied without slapping the woman a few times.
Another older woman thought about it more carefully. She looked Xie Chunhua up and down and figured that she was probably mentally unstable. So she said, "This is clearly capitalist behavior."
"I never imagined that there would still be people thinking about enslaving the vast working masses."
"..." The people surrounding Xie Chunhua began to criticize her behavior, and some who liked to watch the drama even shouted that they should take her to the GWH.
Xie Chunhua knew things were getting out of control and tried to grab Xie Ming to explain, but all she could see when she looked up was his receding figure.
Having no other choice, she had to humble herself and repeatedly explain that she was a poor peasant, that the clothes she was wearing were borrowed, and that Xie Ming's parents were martyrs.
Seeing that she gave a reasonable account of her actions, had a good attitude in admitting her mistake, and was even willing to go to the armed forces department to find witnesses, the group of older women let her go.
Having already walked a distance and sorted through all his memories, Xie Ming naturally didn't bother to say another word to Xie Chunhua and walked straight in another direction.
He still needed to go back to the village, but he had some things to take care of right now.
It's 1971 now, which is similar to the 1970s in China. Except for the leaders, production and culture are pretty much the same. This time, his identity is a member of the third team of Hongxing Brigade, Dagang Village, Shuangyang Town.
The majority of people in Dagang Village are members of the Xie clan, and they are very closely united. So no matter what happens outside, the village still insists on preserving some of the clan's rules.
His family lived near the Xie family's house, located in the eastern part of the village, which was considered a good location. When his grandfather was young, he often walked with his head tilted to one side, and the villagers liked to call him "Old Crooked." In his old age, everyone called him "Old Crooked Xie."
Xie Laowai and his wife Xie Laotai raised four sons and three daughters. All three daughters were sold to exchange for food during the famine. However, only the three sons, Xie Quanfu, Xie Quanxi, and Xie Quanwang, actually stayed at home. The youngest son, Xie Quanli, was adopted by a cousin in the clan when he was young.
Xie Ming's current identity is that of Xie Quanli's adopted son.
Years ago, Xie Quanli went to fight the Japanese with his unit, and he never returned. Then, in 1956, a town leader brought a two-year-old child to Xie Laowai's house, saying that the child was Xie Quanli's.
The leader later explained that Xie Quanli had injured his head during the War of Resistance against Japan and had forgotten everything. A few years ago, he got married and had children while in the army.
When their child turned two, Xie Quanli finally remembered everything and decided to immediately return to his hometown to visit his parents. However, the couple encountered enemy agents on the train and were killed during the capture, leaving behind their young son, Xie Ming.
Before returning to his hometown, Xie Quanli reported his regained memory to the military, so after the incident, the military decided to send the child back to his grandparents in Dagang Village to be raised. Of course, the couple's pension and years of wages were also given to the Xie family by the town leaders.
