Chapter 3 Opening a Record Store

He had a driver's license, but only for automatic transmissions. Now, however, he is very skilled at driving and can even drive a truck, just like a veteran driver with over ten years of experience.

Although he was itching to buy one, there was nothing he could do. The price of a car these days was simply astronomical, so Tang Ping had no choice but to endure it.

Back home, Tang Ping's mother, Zhou Xiaofeng, was still waiting. The dishes were all kept warm in the pot, waiting for Tang Ping to return.

Tang Ping said, "Mom, why don't you eat first? What are you waiting for me to do?"

Zhou Xiaofeng complained, "I'm not hungry, but you brought back fish and meat. Did you win the lottery? You need to be more careful with your money, you know?"

Tang Ping ate the meat heartily and laughed, "No, but your son will soon be rich. You can eat whatever you want, and I'll even find you ten beautiful wives to serve you!"

"What's wrong with you? I'd be burning incense if you could find a wife!"

Zhou Xiaofeng laughed and scolded.

After finishing his meal, Tang Ping sat on the worn-out sofa and did the math.

Today, the fish stall only made 120 yuan in revenue. After deducting the cost of buying the fish, it wasn't even enough to fill a gap in our stomach.

There was nothing he could do; his stall was in such a bad location that almost all the customers who came into the market to buy fish ended up buying them at Gao Qiqiang's stall.

If you want to change seats, you also need to give Tang Xiaolong a gift, a plasma TV worth over 20,000 yuan, which is not worth it.

There's no hope for the fish stall business.

All night long, Tang Ping kept thinking about how to earn his first pot of gold.

Running a fish stall can only provide for basic needs; if you want to make money, you have to find other ways.

I want to open a restaurant, but I don't have the skills.

Beauty and hair salons are even less likely to work.

There are many ways to make money, such as sand mining or hair salons, which are highly profitable industries that offer quick profits, but they are all illegal. Once you get involved, you'll only go further down the path of crime.

Tang Ping didn't want to end up like Gao Qiqiang.

"How can I make money quickly?"

Tang Ping racked his brains. Although he had lived two lives, he still had no idea where to start.

Oh, right, the music and video store!

At that time, the economy was not yet developed, and VCDs were arguably the most convenient and cheapest way for ordinary people to access movies.

Renting DVDs is also popular, mainly because it's cheap.

After a long day at work, the only form of entertainment is watching DVDs, which my kids love too.

Moreover, this was precisely the golden age of Hong Kong films.

Let's do it!

The next morning, Tang Ping got up before dawn. Instead of rushing to the wholesale market, he selected ten turtles of uniform size and delivered them to the Jinghai Hotel.

Manager Sun was indeed very generous and settled the payment that same day.

Of course, perhaps because he benefited from it, Tang Ping naturally returned his share.

The ten turtles cost a total of over 700 yuan. After another day of delivery, Zhao Wei would be able to recoup his shipping costs. The rest would be his profit.

Tang Ping felt that this deal was worth doing.

But selling turtles wasn't a sustainable business, so he wanted to explore other avenues.

After delivering the goods, Tang Ping rushed to the wholesale market without stopping.

Tang Ping found a shop that wholesaled CDs. He didn't rush to buy them, but asked about the prices of several shops first, and finally settled on the second one.

The owner, Yang Guozhi, politely offered him a cigarette and said, "Brother, are you opening a music and video store?"

"Yes, that's why I need a lot of goods, and I'm a long-term customer. Boss, can you give me a discount?" Tang Ping asked.

Yang Guozhi took a drag of his cigarette and said, "Brother, to be honest, these DVDs aren't hard to sell these days. There are record stores everywhere. It depends on how many you order. We have two tiers now: 3,000 at a time is one yuan, and 5,000 is eight mao."

"Then I'll take 5,000 discs. I can choose which ones to buy, right?" Tang Ping thought for a moment, since he wasn't worried about selling the discs anyway.

"Pick whatever you like!"

The CDs in Yang Guozhi's shop were all bundled up and piled up haphazardly, leaving very little room to even step inside.

However, Tang Ping was still very careful and selected several thousand popular Hong Kong movies, such as A Better Tomorrow, Bloody Street, Fist of Legend, and Brothers.

Tang Ping has taken all the classic Hong Kong films, many of which are repeated, since popular Hong Kong films are rented by many people.

Unable to choose from the rest, Tang Ping randomly picked some that he hadn't heard of before, so that the guests could have a better selection to compare.

5,000 discs, totaling four thousand yuan. Yang Guozhi was very generous and took care of delivering them to my door.

After selecting the discs, Tang Ping didn't rush to leave. Instead, he wandered around the wholesale market, where there were countless daily chemical products and small household appliances.

The home appliances seem pretty good, but the cost price is too high.

Tang Ping only selected a few VCD players, since some families hadn't bought them yet, and the prices weren't expensive, costing just over a hundred yuan each.

There is also a DVR.

It's a second-generation hard drive burner monitoring system.

This thing isn't cheap, but Tang Ping thought about it and decided to buy one anyway. The security situation is still quite chaotic right now, so he'd install one in the shop just in case.

Leave these VCD players at Yang Guozhi's shop, and have him deliver them there later.

This was his first business deal, so Tang Ping was full of confidence.

On his way home, he started thinking about the location of the shop.

A record store doesn't need a great location; it's best to be in a densely populated residential area. Old Factory Street is a good option because it's crowded with workers who are enthusiastic about CDs.

Tang Ping remembered that there was a shop for rent on Old Factory Street that sold herbal tea.

He rushed over immediately, and thankfully, the shop hadn't been sublet. The shop owner was Uncle Cheng, and they were all neighbors from the old factory street. Although he didn't know Tang Ping, he knew Tang Ping's parents.
