Chapter 118

What is usually a short distance now seems inexplicably long to Xie Fu.

He lifted the layers of gauze curtains, and then the last layer of bed curtains surrounding the bed. The first thing that caught his eye was the long, flowing black hair that hung down along the edge of the bed.

Looking up from her jet-black hair, Xie Fu saw her cool and aloof face, and a pair of clear, bright eyes looking at him.

Neither of them spoke first.

Silence spread between the two.

Xie Fu stood silently for a moment, then walked over and tidied her slightly messy long hair, pulling up the blankets that had slipped down.

He said softly, "It's very cold in Xiliang during the winter."

Shu Yun reached her hand out from under the covers and grasped Xie Fu's slender, pale fingers. "Xie Fu."

Xie Fu looked up at her.

Shu Yun gazed at him and said, slowly and deliberately, "Let's get married."

Xie Fu did not respond, his beautiful black eyes fixed on the two clasped hands.

Even with so many charcoal braziers in the room, Shu Yun's hands only felt warm in the palms, while her fingertips remained icy cold.

Her hands were slender and delicate, with fingers as thin as scallion roots, as white as jade, and her wrists, exposed outside her sleeves, were like the bright moon, extremely beautiful.

If she isn't a demon, then what is she to be so beautiful and powerful?

"These past three years..." Xie Fu's hand twitched, and he gripped hers tightly. "Where have you been?"

He did not give a direct answer to her marriage proposal.

Shu Yun paused for a moment, then said after a moment's thought, "I'm going home."

Xie Fu: "Home?"

"Yes." She paused. "I'm not in good health, and my family is very worried, so they took me back home for treatment."

Shu Yun thought he was angry that she left without saying goodbye three years ago. "It was wrong of me to leave without saying goodbye three years ago. I didn't expect them to suddenly take action."

Xie Fu's eyelashes drooped, obscuring the emotions in his eyes. "You have family?"

Shu Yun couldn't see into his eyes, so she could only guess what he was thinking. "You, do you feel that I didn't value you because I didn't invite my family to our wedding three years ago?"

Xie Fu's thumb brushed across the back of her hand, leaving a warm touch.

He remained silent.

Shu Yun felt that he must have misunderstood her because of her disappearance over the past three years, or because she suddenly vanished two days before their wedding.

She explained, "The situation was indeed special three years ago, but Xie Fu, I have never taken our wedding lightly. Now my family knows I love you, and I can let them..."

Xie Fu interrupted her, "I didn't think that way."

His eyelashes were half-closed, and the curve of his eyes was beautiful. He put himself in a defensive circle, and Shu Yun, who was not very good at understanding his thoughts to begin with, could not understand him at all now.

Shu Yun spoke in an exceptionally soft voice, carefully beginning, "Then you..."

Xie Fu suddenly looked up at her and smiled, but the smile didn't reach his eyes.

He said to her, "Let's postpone the wedding for now."

Shu Yun was stunned, her clear, sparkling eyes reflecting Xie Fu's figure.

Xie Fu was also observing her expression.

A hint of confusion flashed across her beautiful face, which was pale from her weakness, but she quickly composed herself and concealed her emotions.

Without getting angry or agitated, she questioned him, asking him "why".

She simply sat silently for a while, then calmly accepted his suggestion to postpone the wedding.

Xie Fu gripped her hand slightly tighter. He couldn't help but explain his words aloud, "The Southern Barbarians have always been restless, and the Central Plains also occasionally send troops to harass the northern border of Xiliang. Many aristocratic families in the royal city are eager to make a move."

"Once I've quelled the internal and external troubles in Xiliang, shall we hold a grand and peaceful wedding?"

So that's how it is.

After thinking for a moment, Shu Yun understood Xie Fu's intention.

The Southern Barbarians and the Central Plains might come to harass the borders of Xiliang at any time. As the heir of Xiliang, Xie Fu naturally has to fight in the east and west to protect the territory of Xiliang.

She subconsciously ignored the irrationality in Xie Fu's words.

For example, when will the Southern Barbarians and the Central Plains stop fighting? The Southern Barbarian region is poor and needs to go north to plunder resources. The Central Plains' attack on the northern border of Xiliang is just an attempt to continuously weaken Xiliang.

Given this objective, when will the external threats to Xiliang cease? Only if Xie Fu can lead Xiliang, which is being constantly weakened by the two countries, to defeat and conquer the Nanman and Zhongyuan countries.

Shu Yun didn't know how many years it would take.

Shu Yun nodded and smiled at Xie Fu, indicating that she understood.

When she lost consciousness in Xie Fu's arms, she truly felt that the distance between the two of them suddenly became incredibly close, and they cherished each other as if their hearts were connected.

When she woke up, she found that for some reason an invisible high wall had been erected between them, separating them.

What happened to Xie Fu while she was unconscious?

Or was Xie Fu only moved by her rescue at the time, and after regaining his senses, he was still wary of the superhuman power she displayed, fearing that she might be a monster?

No, Xie Fu isn't as superficial as those people.

Others might fear her because of the power she displays, but Xie Fu will not.

So what exactly is Xie Fu thinking?

Shu Yun closed her eyes, only to feel waves of cramping pain in her abdomen, so painful that her temples throbbed, and she felt extremely agitated.

Xie Fu saw her close her eyes and turn her head away. In his deep black eyes, violent emotions slowly gathered into a storm. He was just one fuse away from being ignited.
