After receiving permission, Su Xingran quickly walked forward about ten meters and found a place to squat down. Because there was no light, it was pitch black around her.
"You brat, are you done yet?" As soon as the words were spoken, a beam of flashlight shone on the spot where Su Xingran had squatted down.
When the light shone on her, Su Xingran had already stood up. She said as she walked, "I'm here, I'm ready, I'll be right there." Su Xingran returned to Doctor Huang's side and helped him continue walking.
Once the enemy had taken Doctor Huang and Su Xingran a little further away, Gu Moting immediately stepped forward and walked to the spot where Su Xingran had been crouching.
Gu Moting found a crumpled piece of paper where Su Xingran had crouched down. He found a secluded spot, making sure the flashlight beam wouldn't attract the enemy's attention, and then unfolded the paper.
"The enemy's hiding place is not far ahead. After we go in, please do not act rashly. Find a suitable time to give you a signal, and that will be the opportunity to capture the enemy."
Halfway there, Su Xingran noticed someone following her. She knew that the only people who could follow her without making a sound were the police or soldiers led by Duan Yuming.
So when Su Xingran found an opportunity to be alone, she entered her space and wrote these words down, then placed them underground.
When the Japanese man shone a flashlight on Su Xingran, she made a gesture. She extended her index finger while clenching the other four fingers, pointing her index finger towards the spot where the crumpled paper was.
The gesture was very subtle, almost unconscious, but it was because Su Xingran was looking in the direction Gu Moting was hiding. With a soldier's keen senses, Gu Moting noticed Su Xingran's instruction.
Gu Moting folded the crumpled paper and put it in his pocket, smiling silently. What an exceptionally intelligent girl; she actually noticed someone was following her. If she weren't so young, he would have thought she was a former special forces soldier.
At the town's police station, Zhang Yizhu was taken to a small, dark room. The soldiers who arrested him and put him in that room hadn't paid him any attention since.
He was in the darkness, trembling with fear. He knew he was doomed—no, the entire Zhang family was doomed. He had never considered what would happen if he were caught. He thought he had hidden himself well; after all, no one had discovered him for nearly thirty years.
Now he had to think about what would happen if he were arrested; enemy agents would be executed. Their families would also be implicated and branded, with no hope of ever getting ahead again. Even if they farmed in the village, they would be looked down upon and used as examples for criticism and struggle sessions.
Zhang Yizhu had an impulse to tell everything he knew in order to ensure his son Zhang Weibing's safety. Little did he know, the soldiers and police knew far more than this enemy agent.
Trying to use information to ensure Zhang Weibing's safety is wishful thinking. Even if Zhang Weibing was unaware, as a family member of an enemy agent, he will not pass any future political vetting, and will be barred from participating in any state-assigned work.
After walking for nearly two hours, Su Xingran and her companions reached a point about 200 meters from the finish line. The Japanese man who had been leading the way stopped and took out a rope to re-tie Su Xingran's head. He then took out the hoods and put them back on Su Xingran and Doctor Huang's heads.
