Xiao Dingyu waited at the Gu family home for Xiao Xue to return from her holiday in the afternoon. After Xiao Dingyu confessed to Gu Junru and Liang Yun, the three became closer. Previously, they were in-laws, but now Xiao Dingyu was the son of an old friend of the Gu couple. Gu Junru and Xiao Baiyu were of the same generation, so Xiao Dingyu was considered a junior.
The three agreed that they wouldn't stand on ceremony. From now on, Xiao Dingyu would call Gu Junru and Liang Yun, the man "Uncle Junru" and the woman "Aunt Yun." As for the children, they could just call them by their original names.
Su Xingran and Xiao Xue were both given a day off in the afternoon, and neither of them had any extra classes on Saturday and Sunday. Su Xingran had applied some medicinal wine to Xiao Xue's back, and the wounds had healed.
Su Xingran escorted Xiao Xue to the Gu family's gate and was about to ride her bicycle back to the Huang family when the gate opened. Su Xingran was somewhat surprised to see who opened the gate, while Xiao Xue was completely stunned and stood there dumbfounded.
Xiao Dingyu smiled as he looked at his stunned daughter. "What's wrong? You don't recognize your father after only a few months?" Xiao Dingyu then shifted his gaze to Su Xingran. "Xingran, you've grown a bit taller in the few months I've seen you. You and Xiaoxue come inside first, let's chat for a while."
Su Xingran reacted quickly, "Hello Uncle Dingyu, it's been several months since I last saw you. I'll ride my bicycle back to my master's house first; he'll be worried if he doesn't see me come home for so long. I'll go back and tell him I'll come over later."
Xiao Dingyu nodded. "Of course. Xingran, go back and tell Doctor Huang to come back later and be careful on the way."
After Su Xingran left, Xiao Xue had already realized what was happening. She happily tugged at Xiao Dingyu's sleeve, "Father, why are you here? You didn't write to tell me you were coming to the capital!"
Xiao Dingyu patted Xiao Xue's hair. "Dad has some business to attend to in Beijing. Let's go inside and talk. Uncle Junru and Aunt Yun are inside, and Aunt Hu is making dinner. I heard the door open, and Aunt Yun said it must be you coming back."
Xiao Xue, a bright smile on her face, pushed her bicycle into the house. Although her mother wasn't there, seeing her father made her truly happy. Then, belatedly, Xiao Xue remembered that her father had called her in-laws "Uncle" and "Aunt" earlier. When had he changed his address?
Su Xingran returned to the Huang family home, but only Huang's mother and Huang Zhenhua were not home. Su Xingran told Huang's mother, "Huang's mother, I need to go to the Gu family home. Sister-in-law Xiaoxue's father is here. I'm afraid you and Master will worry if you don't see me come home, so I'll go home first before I go."
When Huang Ma heard that Xiaoxue's father had arrived, she knew that Xingran and Xiaoxue were from the same town and their families knew each other. Huang Ma said to Su Xingran, "Okay, go ahead! I'll tell Zhenhua when he gets back. Be careful when you go out, and be careful on your way home tonight too."
Su Xingran smiled and replied to Aunt Huang, "Aunt Huang, I know, I will definitely be careful. I don't know if Master will be back for dinner. If you're hungry, please eat first, otherwise being hungry is not good for your health."
Hearing Su Xingran's heartwarming words, Huang Ma smiled broadly, her eyes crinkling. "Okay, Huang Ma understands. You should go now! It wouldn't be good if the Gu family waited for you for dinner."
Su Xingran put down her backpack, rode her bicycle out the door towards the Gu family's house. When Su Xingran arrived, the Gu family's meal was already on the table, and she could sit down and eat as soon as she arrived.
During the meal, Liang Yun kept putting food on Xiao Xue and Su Xingran's plates. She felt that the two children had lost a lot of weight. Xingran, in particular, had become noticeably thinner, with her collarbones protruding. Her face, which used to be a little chubby, now had a more defined jawline.
Su Xingran and Xiao Xue exchanged a glance, both seeing helplessness in each other's eyes. They were so full after eating all that food; if you didn't know they were going to school, you'd think they'd just returned from fleeing famine.
