Gu Moli's letter was sent directly to the hospital, and Su Xingran would reply to it. They chatted about everyday things, talking like pen pals who never met in person.
Two events occurred at the end of 1978. First, the "Down to the Countryside Movement" for educated youth ended, and a large number of them returned to the cities. Second, the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was convened, implementing policies of domestic reform and opening up to the outside world.
Su Xingran noticed the large number of young people on the streets recently, knowing they were all former educated youth who had recently returned to the city. With the Lunar New Year approaching, Su Xingran was also preparing to go home for the holiday.
A week before the Lunar New Year, Su Xingran took the train home. Huang Zhenhua was worried about Su Xingran traveling home alone, but Su Xingran repeatedly assured him that she would take good care of herself. Huang Zhenhua could only let her have her way.
Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan were so excited about their daughter's return that they couldn't sleep at night. Huang Tai'an picked Su Xingran up on the day she returned.
Huang Tai'an received the transfer order, and after the New Year, he was officially transferred back to Beijing. He chose to spend his last New Year back in Beijing in Shitou Town. Seeing Su Xingran, Huang Tai'an couldn't help but sigh at how much she had changed as she grew up.
Su Xingran looked at Huang Tai'an, who had come to pick her up, and said, "Brother Tai'an, it's been a long time. Thank you for your help."
Huang Tai'an said with a smile, "Why are you being so polite? You've grown quite a bit and taller. Get in the car, it's terribly cold."
On the way, Su Xingran learned that Huang Tai'an had been transferred back to Beijing after the New Year. Huang Tai'an told Su Xingran that he and his wife would return to Beijing on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, and their child had already been brought back to Beijing for the holiday. He said that if Su Xingran wanted to return to Beijing, she could go with him and his wife.
As the car arrived at Sujia Village, Su Xingran felt a surge of excitement looking at the village she hadn't visited in almost a year. Huang Tai'an dropped Su Xingran off at her doorstep and drove away; he had other things to do and was in a bit of a hurry.
Hearing the commotion outside, Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan quickly came out to see what was happening. Seeing Su Xingran standing at the door, Zeng Huilan went over and hugged her.
"Ranran, come inside quickly, are you freezing?" Zeng Huilan pulled Su Xingran into the house, asking as they went. Su Guomin followed behind, carrying Su Xingran's luggage into the house.
Su Xingran smiled as she looked at her incessantly chattering mother. "Mom, I'm not cold. My clothes are very thick and warm."
The family of three went inside, where there was a fire, making it much warmer than outside. Zeng Huilan pulled Su Xingran to sit down, and Su Guomin put his luggage down next to him and sat down as well.
Zeng Huilan asked Su Xingran, "Ranran, is your internship at the hospital tiring? How are you getting along with the doctors and nurses?"
Su Xingran glanced at her father, who was listening attentively, and her mother, who was waiting for her answer. "Dad, Mom, don't worry, I'm not tired. Aunt Shen, who takes care of me, is a very kind person and takes good care of me. The nurses and doctors are also very friendly to me. One of the nurses treats me like a younger sister."
Knowing that Su Xingran was doing well, Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan were relieved. Knowing that Su Xingran had returned today, Zeng Huilan got up early in the morning to make noodles.
Su Xingran felt warm both physically and emotionally as she ate the noodles her parents had prepared.
