Su Xingran realized that Gu Moli had already boarded the train back to his unit. Last night, at her doorstep, Gu Moli handed her a box. Seeing Gu Moli's earnest expression, Su Xingran finally accepted the box.
Before going to bed that night, Su Xingran opened the box and found a jade pendant inside. Su Xingran remembered what Gu Moli had said when he handed her the box: the contents were not suitable for public display right now, but he wanted to give them to her.
Su Xingran stared silently at the jade pendant for a long time. In ancient times, it seemed that when a man gave jade as a gift, there was a hidden meaning. Since it wasn't explicitly stated, Su Xingran decided to pretend she didn't know.
Su Xingran had no idea how long Gu Moli struggled with his decision before giving away the jade pendant. It was a pair of pendants given to him by his aunt when he was a child. His aunt had said that he would give one of the pendants to someone he wanted to give it to later.
Gu Moli made two plans: either Su Xingran would accept the jade pendant, or he would return it to its rightful owner. If it was the former, Gu Moli would be very happy; if it was the latter, Gu Moli would respect Su Xingran's choice and wait until the day Su Xingran would accept the jade pendant.
A few days later, Su Xingran heard a commotion coming from the ward as she passed by. She went inside and saw the injured man cursing at the nurses.
The man lay on the bed cursing, "You filthy woman, do you want me to die? Cleaning and disinfecting is excruciating! What's wrong with you being so coy when I ask you to change my pants? What are you pretending to be so high and mighty for? Aren't nurses supposed to be here to clean up after patients? I'm going to complain to your hospital leadership about you."
The woman sitting next to her also pointed at the nurse and yelled, "How can you do your job like this? You made my son's wound hurt so much. And it's just changing a pair of pants, haven't you seen enough doctors at the hospital? Humph!"
The nurse, her eyes red and swollen, stood there at a loss. Su Xingran walked behind her and patted her on the shoulder. The nurse turned around, saw Su Xingran, and tears streamed down her face.
Su Xingran took out a handkerchief from her pocket and wiped away the nurse's tears. She asked softly, "What happened? Can you tell me?"
Sensing that someone of hers had arrived, the nurse tearfully recounted the entire incident. Su Xingran listened attentively until the nurse finished speaking before replying, "Stand behind me for now, I'll handle this."
Even though Su Xingran was wearing a mask, the woman still recognized her as one of the doctors who had treated her son that night. Before Su Xingran could say anything, the woman spoke first.
The woman looked at Su Xingran and said, "Doctor, the nurses at your hospital are really useless. They can make patients suffer terribly just by disinfecting wounds. And my son's pants got wet, and she absolutely refused to change them when I asked her. I really have to complain to the hospital leadership. What kind of nurses have they hired? They have no sense of propriety at all."
Su Xingran ignored the woman and went directly to the bedside of the man who had been slashed. Su Xingran turned to the woman and the nurse and said, "You two go out first. I'll check the wound and say something to help him recover."
The nurse looked at Su Xingran with some concern. Although Su Xingran was a doctor, she was still so young. This man had been in a bad mood ever since he woke up. Whenever the nurses on duty gave him injections or disinfected his wounds, he would yell at them. Sometimes the things he said were so awful, they were simply unbearable to hear.
Su Xingran gave the nurse a reassuring look, signaling her to leave the ward. The nurse had no choice but to push the cart out of the ward. Seeing that the nurse had left, the woman felt reassured that Su Xingran had saved her son, so she also left the ward.
