Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan arrived at the brigade and went inside. The telephone on the table rang. The village chief picked up the receiver, listened to it, and then handed it to Zeng Huilan.
Zeng Huilan took the phone and put it to her ear. "Hello, Ranran, what's up with your call? Tell me, Mom is listening."
Su Xingran said something, and Zeng Huilan's expression changed several times. After a while, Zeng Huilan handed the microphone to Su Guomin, who was standing next to her. Su Guomin took the microphone and listened.
Su Guomin's expression changed several times while he was on the phone. Finally, the call ended, and Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan looked at each other. They exchanged glances, and then both nodded.
About ten minutes later, the phone rang again. Su Guomin picked up the receiver. "Ranran, your mother and I have discussed it, and you decide these things. You've known him for so many years, and your parents think he's a good person. Most importantly, you shouldn't compromise yourself. Your parents hope you find someone suitable for you."
After leaving the brigade, Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan returned home. The two sat in the house, trying to process every word Su Xingran had said on the phone.
After hanging up on her parents, Su Xingran dialed Gu Moli's number again. Although Gu Moli didn't know why Su Xingran had hung up and wouldn't call back for an hour, he rushed to answer the phone as soon as he heard it was ringing.
Gu Moli picked up the microphone placed beside him, "Hello, Xingran, I'm here. You've finished your work, right? Then I'll tell you what I wanted to say earlier."
Su Xingran said, "I called home and finished my business. You can tell me what you want to say; I'm listening."
Gu Moli swallowed hard, mustered his courage, and said, "My name is Gu Moli, I am twenty-eight years old, an active-duty soldier, and I have parents, an older brother, and an older sister. My older brother is married to his wife and they have a child, and my older sister is already married. I have long admired Comrade Su Xingran and wish to develop a romantic relationship with her with marriage as the goal. I wonder if Comrade Su Xingran would also be willing to develop a relationship with me?"
After saying these words, Gu Moli held his breath, waiting for a response from the other end of the microphone. At this moment, Gu Moli was filled with anxiety; he was afraid of hearing a rejection.
Gu Moli waited for a while but didn't hear anything from the other end of the phone. He remained silent, not wanting to urge Su Xingran; Gu Moli preferred to wait on his own.
Just when Gu Moli thought Su Xingran's silence meant rejection, Su Xingran's voice came through the receiver, "Gu Moli, go ahead and file for marriage! I think after all these years of communication, we don't need to understand anything more. Gu Moli, aren't you tired of waiting all these years?"
Upon hearing Su Xingran's words, Gu Moli clenched his fists, even gripping the microphone tightly. His face was filled with overwhelming joy and excitement. What had he heard? His beloved girl was asking him to file for marriage, and even asking if he was tired after waiting all these years. She knew, she had always known his feelings.
With tears welling in his eyes, Gu Moli said in a slightly hoarse voice, "I'm not tired, not at all. Waiting for you is the best battle I've ever fought. Xingran, thank you, thank you for accepting me. But can we postpone the marriage application? I haven't formally visited Uncle Guomin and Aunt Huilan, so I don't know if they approve of me. If I submit the application rashly, will they think I'm not good enough?"
