Old Mrs. Su and Zhao Xiaohua arrived at Su Xingran's house. After looking around and seeing no one passing by, Old Mrs. Su took out her key and unlocked the gate to the yard.
"Come on, eldest daughter-in-law, I've unlocked the door." Old Mrs. Su and Zhao Xiaohua quickly entered the yard. These days, most families only lock the outer gate of their yard when they're away for extended periods; they don't lock the inside of their houses.
The two sneaked into the house and found Su Xingran's room. Zhao Xiaohua took out a box of matches and a talisman she had obtained from Aunt He. After burning them to ashes, she crushed them into tiny pieces and put them into a water glass on the desk, then stirred them well.
There's another one that's kept close to her body, Mother, what should we do with this? Eldest daughter-in-law, are you silly? Just put it in your pocket. But how will we know which clothes she's wearing? Old Mrs. Su thought about it and agreed. Who knows which clothes that evil spirit will wear?
The two of them stood there, thinking it over and over. Mother needed to make a decision quickly, because if they took too long, the second son and his wife would be back soon. Oh, and eldest son's wife, let's go check the clothes hanging out to dry in the yard. If they're dry, she can wear them tomorrow.
He walked out to the yard to hang Su Xingran's clothes to dry. He touched her clothes; they were dry, meaning they must have been drying for several days. There were other clothes nearby, but they were wet.
Eldest daughter-in-law, quickly put the talisman in your pocket. We still have a corner to stick it on. The corner is easier to find; they just stuck the talisman on the bottom of a corner in the room that's not easy to spot.
Having completed her task, Old Lady Su wanted to go inside to see if there was anything good she could take home. Zhao Xiaohua stopped her, "Mother, let's go quickly. We can't stay here any longer. If Second Brother comes back and runs into us, how will you explain that the two of us were at his house?" Old Lady Su also stopped her greedy thoughts. The two of them went to the courtyard gate, opened it a crack to see that no one was there, quickly came out, locked the gate, and left as fast as they could.
Su Xingran, who was at her master's house watching him treat other patients, had no idea that someone had entered her home and added something to her water cup.
When Su Xingran returned home in the evening, after having dinner with her parents, she felt a little thirsty. She went into her room, took out a water glass, and poured hot water into the room. Because of the cold weather, she always left some cold water in the glass so that she could just add hot water when she was thirsty.
After pouring the water, she picked it up to drink when, out of the corner of her eye, she saw some dark shadows in the water. She immediately put it down and looked inside, only to find that the water was very dirty, with some black specks.
Su Xingran assumed the hot water in the kettle was dirty, so she picked up another cup from the table and poured some hot water into it. She picked it up to look, but there were no dirty black spots inside.
Why are there black spots on her water glass? She washes it every day, and the water in it is from the thermos she pours out before leaving the house. She puts a little cotton ball in the glass, stirs it, and then takes it out.
Upon closer inspection, she noticed that the cotton ball was covered in what appeared to be ash from burnt paper. Worried she might have made a mistake, she lit some paper and matches, turned them into ash, and then poured the ash into a glass of water, stirring it. After about ten minutes, she picked up the glass and saw that it truly was ash from burnt paper.
How could there be ashes from burned paper in the water glass? Su Xingran's expression was somewhat heavy. Her intuition told her that something must have happened at home that she and her parents didn't know about.
After tidying up the kitchen, Su's mother entered the house and saw Su Xingran standing there motionless. "Ranran, what's wrong? Why are you standing there?"
Su Xingran came to her senses. "Mother, when you and Father came back, did you notice anything strange about the house? Was the lock on the front door locked or open?"
Su's mother was a little confused by Su Xingran's question. What did Ranran mean by that? She quickly came to her senses and asked, "Ranran, what happened that you asked?"
