Chapter 48 Su Xingran Discovers the Anomaly (2/2)

Mom, I felt thirsty and wanted to drink some water, so I went to my room, got a glass, and poured some hot water. Just as I was about to drink, I noticed some black shadows in the water. I didn't drink it and quickly put it down to look, and it turned out to be full of black specks.

I put a cotton ball into a glass of water, stirred it, and took it out. What stuck to the cotton ball was the ash from burned paper. I even took some burnt paper and put that ash into another glass of water, and it had the exact same black spot.

The hot water in the kettle didn't have any black specks, and I wash the cups every day. I even poured hot water into the kettle to cool before leaving this morning, and I didn't find any black specks then either.

Mom, I think someone has broken into our house. You and Dad should check if anything is missing or has been ransacked. It would be better to check the house thoroughly.

When Su Xingran said that someone might have entered the house, Su's mother panicked. "Guomin, come outside quickly!"

Hearing his daughter-in-law's voice from inside the room, Su's father quickly came out. "What's wrong, Huilan? Your complexion has suddenly turned sour. Are you feeling unwell?"

I'm not feeling unwell, I'm just a little worried. Ranran said someone might have come into the house; there was a piece of paper in Ranran's water cup that had been burned and left ashes.

How could this be? When we came back, the door was locked. We didn't find anything wrong in the house either; look, nothing was messed up.

Dad, I locked the door when I left. I kept the key in my pocket the whole time, but I just don't understand why there's this dirty stuff in my cup.

Ranran, go back to your room and check if there's anything else suspicious. Huilan, let's also check the house for any signs of disturbance. Although Su's father thought it was unlikely that someone had broken into the house, he still felt it was wrong and wanted to check, just in case something happened and he regretted it later.

They searched the entire house, but still found nothing suspicious. Even if they searched again, it would be the same. Su Xingran harbored suspicions, but had no evidence to prove them. Just then, her mother called her, saying that hot water was ready and she could take a bath or simply wipe herself down.

After taking a shower, Su Xingran returned to her room and had just sat down when she felt something strange in her pocket. She put her hand in and felt a paper-like object. Taking it out, she recognized it as a talisman and became somewhat uneasy.

Now is the time to break down feudal superstitions; such things are impossible and cannot appear randomly. She felt it would be better to ask her parents.

"Father, Mother, I found this in my pants pocket. I wore these pants after I took a shower." Su's father took the item from Su Xingran's hand; it was a talisman folded into a triangle. Su's father's expression instantly changed, and Su's mother, seeing the talisman as well, also changed her expression.

Nobody keeps these things at home anymore; nobody dares to keep such things at home these days. If the militia or the Red Armband officers catch these superstitious items, they'll be criticized and sent to the countryside.

Mom and Dad, it seems someone really did get into our house. The thing floating in the water in my cup must be the talisman burned to ashes and put in there. There are so many places to put talismans in the house, but of all places, they put it in my water cup and in my pocket.

The person who placed the talismans clearly knows me and was probably targeting me; otherwise, how would you explain finding these talismans in my water glass and pockets?
