Chapter Fifty-Six: Southeast Learns the Truth

Seeing the four pheasants in their hands, they quickly took them. Cuihua, hearing the noise, also ran out. Four pheasants! Only one is needed for the roof beam.

Xuemei glanced behind them. Where were the village chief and the others? Dongnan laughed heartily, saying they were dragging a wild boar down the mountain behind them.

"You hunted a wild boar? Are you hurt?" Xuemei asked in surprise.

Yan Xiaoqiang glanced at Dongnan with a playful look, eager to see his response, but his daughter was more important. He ran into the yard to wash his hands and face to see his daughter.

Yan Xiaonan fell into a deep sleep on the kang (a heated brick bed), instantly freezing Yan Xiaoqiang's joy. Looking at his daughter's pale face, his heart ached.

Grandma Yan initially thought Nan Nan was just asleep, but now that she looked, she realized something was wrong. She quickly closed her bedroom door, looked at Yan Xiao Nan carefully, and knew that her precious child must have used her magic power today and was exhausted.

She quickly inquired about the situation of hunting wild boars on the mountain today. She learned that both wild boars were killed by Dongnan with a single slap in front of him. With that in mind, she looked at the sleeping Yan Xiaonan and took out her handkerchief to wipe away her tears. "My poor little darling, you saved your brother's life, and you saved him twice in a row. You even exhausted yourself to the point of fainting."

Cuihua handed the pheasants to Xuemei and went to ask Grandma Yan what to do with them. When she opened the door, she saw Grandma Yan wiping away tears. Her eyes immediately went to Yan Xiaonan, and she rushed over to check on her. Sure enough, her daughter had fainted again.

Yan Xiaoqiang recounted what had just happened to Cuihua, which made Cuihua so heartbroken that she couldn't speak. Tears streamed down her face as she picked up Yan Xiaonan and hugged her tightly, saying, "My poor daughter, how old are you? How can you work so hard?"

Grandma Yan quickly told Cuihua to put Yan Xiaonan down, whispering that the fairy needed to sleep well to recover her magical powers, and that she shouldn't be disturbed. Cuihua was terrified and carefully laid Yan Xiaonan down, covering her with a blanket. Her mother must have told her that; she couldn't be moved again.

Southeast sat silently in the main room, calming the surging emotions in his heart. He had been eavesdropping at the door when Cuihua went in. It turned out that his sister was truly a fairy reincarnated. If it weren't for his sister today, so many people might have been stuck on the mountain and wouldn't have been able to come down.

The thought of the wild boar's tusks biting at him still made his heart tremble. He had truly been on the verge of death today, twice in a row. Thankfully, his sister had been there to help him. However, he had to keep this a secret and absolutely could not expose Nan Nan. Also, the mountains were really dangerous, and he absolutely could not let Bei Nan and Xinan go up there.

Mushroom Village is bustling again today, this time more so than ever before. Seven people and a dog have killed two wild boars. Everyone is waiting at the foot of the mountain. Sure enough, the group makes two simple stretchers and carries the wild boars down.

Look at that size! Goodness, it must weigh at least three or four hundred pounds! The wild boar in front of us has turned into meat in our bowls, and our mouths are watering. But everyone knows that the Yan family led people to hunt this wild boar for the roof beam raising ceremony tomorrow. Tomorrow, the whole village will be eating the roof beam raising meal. Although it's just a cornbread, now that we have wild boar, we're sure to have some meat to eat.

The wild boars were carried to the Yan family's doorstep. The villagers circled the boars again and again. When they learned that both wild boars had been killed by Dongnan with a single slap, their gazes toward the Yan family's main hall changed. Killing a wild boar with a single slap? What kind of skill was that? When did Dongnan go out and learn martial arts?

Those who had thought of seduce some wild boar meat wisely kept their mouths shut. Were their heads harder than a wild boar's? They should just find a way to get a bigger bite tomorrow and avoid any trouble.

Grandma Yan came out and looked at the two wild boars on the ground that had caused her precious child to faint. She stomped on them hard twice. "Dead pigs, I'll eat you tomorrow!" But she didn't forget to examine the wild boars' heads carefully. Goodness, how much force did my child use? Half of their heads are smashed! Can this smashed head be used? We'll have to offer pig heads as a sacrifice tomorrow.

Yan Xiaoqiang pointed to the end where the machete had chopped into the hole. "Mom, that end is alright." Grandma Yan went over to take a look. "Hmm, this end is a bit better. Although it was also smashed, it wasn't as strong as the other end, so I can still tidy it up."

"Mom, where are the two wild boars? What should we do?" Yan Xiaoqiang's meaning was very clear. It wasn't just the two of them who went up the mountain. Grandma Yan really wanted to eat alone. What's the point of so many people going up the mountain? It's not like you're my darlings. You want to come down the mountain too, but they're also helping with the house-raising ceremony. They can't eat alone, otherwise they'll lose face in the village.

Pointing to the pig with the machete, he said, "Qiangzi, why did you take that one? Give the bigger one to the village chief to deal with. Why don't you want it?"

Yan Xiaoqiang admired his mother most for this: she always did the right thing at the right time. She was so magnanimous. He walked over to Village Chief Ma, who was still excitedly recounting what had happened, and said, "Uncle Village Chief, my mother asked you to take the big-headed wild boar away. You're in charge of what to do with it."

"What? What did you say? This was fought in the southeast; we didn't contribute anything," the village chief said in disbelief.

"Don't mention yours or mine, we're all here for my family's roof beam raising ceremony. Uncle Village Chief, please don't be so polite, take it. I'll use the smaller one for the roof beam raising ceremony tomorrow, so we won't share it."

"Grandma Yan is so generous, Qiangzi is so generous!" Someone shouted, and everyone joined in. Tang Jianjun suggested that everyone clean up the two wild boars today so that they could be used for the roof-raising ceremony tomorrow.

The village chief had someone call the butcher to clean the two pigs. He then had his wife find some hardworking people, and it took them four or five hours to clean the two pigs thoroughly. The butcher returned home satisfied with ten pounds of pork. This was his second time visiting Mushroom Village; it truly was a blessed place.

This scene almost made Wang Gou Dan grind his teeth to pieces. His mother was already half-paralyzed and bedridden, and could hardly take care of herself. She relied entirely on several maids to serve her. The family had lost one laborer and gained another mouth to feed.

Erniu saw him as an enemy, someone who had never called him "Dad" before. His wife had gone to sleep in the same room as his daughter and acted as if she didn't recognize him. Erniu felt an itch to beat her up again, but seeing Erniu's cold gaze, he didn't dare to do it.

Last week, I signed the death warrant that would deduct my work points at the end of the year. The village had paid for my daughter's, my wife's, my mother's, and my own medical expenses. The village chief said he would use the work points from the end of the year to deduct them. I calculated that after the deduction, it would be just right, and the whole family would be starving.

My family is so poor, we can't even afford to eat. How come the Yan family is so rich? They've built a new house, and now they're having a house-raising ceremony and even taking people up the mountain to hunt wild boars. How are they so capable? If they're hunting wild boars, why don't they just kill their own family members on the mountain?
