Chapter Ninety-Eight: The Precious Comic Book

Xiaoqiang got on the oxcart, feeling a little depressed. As if the heavens knew what Xiaoqiang was thinking, snow began to fall.

At first, it was snowing pellets, like the sky sprinkling sugar. Gradually, the snow became heavier and heavier, like goose feathers, flying all over the sky, mixed with the howling north wind, and the sky turned white.

Uncle San was startled, realizing a cold wave was coming. He raised his whip and lashed it hard on the ground. The old ox let out a moo and quickened its pace, causing the vehicle to shake. Yan Xiaoqiang quickly grabbed the handlebars, trying not to fall off.

There was a knock on the courtyard gate, and Dongnan rushed out to open it. Yan Xiaoqiang walked in, covered in snow from head to toe. Cuihua quickly brushed the snow off him, but his clothes were already soaked.

As Yan Xiaonan opened and closed the door in the southeast, he was covered in a layer of snow. Looking at the heavy snow falling outside, he thought, "The winter in the north is so beautiful, but it's also so cold. If there's no fire pit, I'll freeze to death."

The hibernation period has officially begun. Grandma Yan is glad that her eldest son left today. If this kind of snow continues for two more days, the trains will definitely not be able to run.

Unlike the villagers who could comfortably stay at home, the village chief went to the fields once a day without fail to check on the crops, occasionally touching the barley to make sure it was still alive.

Yan Dongnan asked Bei Nan and Xinan to bring out their books and assigned them homework. "It's so cold outside, we can't go out, so let's do our homework."

Looking at their faces filled with bitterness and resentment as they faced their books, Yan Xiaonan thought these two were hopeless, but since they were both afraid of their older brother, they could only pick up their pens and start doing their homework.

Yan Xiaonan glanced at the words they wrote and exclaimed, "Oh dear, this is some kind of cryptic script! I can't understand a single word. But if you can pass this test, I'll call you grandpa."

Southeast's task was to fetch water from the well every other day. This well was amazing; the water quality was excellent, and despite so many people fetching water every day, the water volume didn't seem to decrease.

Everyone says that the mountain god is protecting the villagers of Mushroom Village. Some people who wanted to cause trouble because they didn't have water tickets didn't dare to do it anymore. Who would dare to offend the mountain god?

Well water is warm in winter and cool in summer, so it's never cold when you draw water in Yan Dongnan. The people who used to collect water tickets are gone now; the village chief has announced that no water tickets will be collected during the freezing weather, and you can draw water as much as you want.

Water consumption is already low in winter. Some families don't wash their faces or take baths and only eat one meal a day, so they don't need that much water.

After fetching water, Southeast washed his hands and face, went into the main room, and saw North and Southwest drinking water. He then picked up their homework books and started reading.

Enraged by this, he grabbed a feather duster and lashed out at the two men. Although they were wearing padded jackets, the man from the southeast was strong and the blows still stung.

The two men knew perfectly well why Southeast had hit them, and they quickly begged for forgiveness: "Brother, I was wrong. I'll rewrite it and promise to finish it carefully."

Yan Dongnan put down the feather duster and picked up Yan Xiaonan's homework. Yan Xiaonan's homework was very simple, just writing a page of pinyin letters. Even though it was only one page, it was clean, neat and tidy.

Yan Dongnan placed Yan Xiaonan's homework in front of Bei Nan and Xinan: "Look at this, your handwriting is worse than a baby's. How can you be so shameless? Follow this standard and write accordingly. You're not allowed to eat today until you finish."

North and Southwest sighed, "South, you can't write such terrible scribbles!"

Yan Xiaonan began to complain: "Grandma, Third Brother made me draw talismans."

Grandma Yan picked up the feather duster that Southeast had just put down and smacked Bei Nan's bottom. Bei Nan clutched his bottom and ran around the whole room, almost bumping into Cui Hua who came out of the kitchen.

Oh, it's lunchtime. The dishes are simple: sweet potato and millet rice with some pickles and such. It's all you can eat.

But today, Bei Nan and Xin Nan won't get any food. They have to carefully erase their "heavenly books" without damaging the notebooks, and then they have to do their homework according to Yan Xiao Nan's standards. It's really too difficult!

Bei Nan could never concentrate, and finally managed to erase little holes in her notebook. Xin Nan, on the other hand, found it increasingly enjoyable to write. Nan Nan's letter was curved, and no matter how big or small the curve was, it wouldn't look good.

Bei Nan watched as Xinan was almost finished writing and couldn't help but get anxious. Two people going hungry together could endure it, but he definitely couldn't endure it if he went hungry alone.

It's definitely not feasible to ask Southwest to do my homework for no reason. I remembered my two new comic books, so I thought I could trade them for them.

Southwest had wanted to read these two comic books for a long time, but North South just wouldn't allow it. Turns out, this was what he was waiting for.

Southwest refused to do any more than a week's worth of homework with a comic book, so North quickly tossed the comic book to Southwest, along with the homework.

Southwest resigned himself to his fate and began to write carefully, stroke by stroke. To be honest, it was just a few words to write, and Southwest finished quickly.

The two took the homework book. Dongnan took it and looked at Beinan suspiciously, but the tattered and worn-out wipes successfully tricked Dongnan into handing over the food.

Yan Xiaonan's consciousness already knew all this. Southwest was really going all out for those two comic books. What kind of comic books were they that Southwest liked so much?

Yan Xiaonan's consciousness drifted to the comic book on the desk. He took a look and laughed, because Bei Nan had definitely lost money this time. The full-color printed Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai would have been worth more than 100,000 yuan in the 20th century.

There's also a letter in the shape of a chicken feather, which will probably be worth tens of thousands of yuan by then. Hmm, I need to tell Southwest to keep it safe and not to damage or lose it.

However, it seems that Southwest has several comic books, which he opens very carefully and puts away with great care. Unlike North and South, whose comic books are already like his textbooks, missing parts.

Thinking of this, Yan Xiaonan said to Southwest, "Second Brother, I want to read comic books."

Southwest quickly put down his bowl and chopsticks, went inside and took out the two newly acquired comic books, handing them to Yan Xiaonan: "Nannan, ask your second brother if you don't know any words."

Yan Xiaonan hurriedly and carefully took it. It was worth over ten thousand yuan, so how could she not be careful? Damaging even one page would significantly reduce its value.

Yan Xiaonan flipped through the full-color Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai book. Yu Lianyuan's painting skills were truly remarkable, and the color scheme was very gentle.

Watching Yan Xiaonan flip through the pages, Bei Nan couldn't help but ask, "Nan Nan, do you recognize the words?"

Yan Xiaonan shook her head: "I don't know him."

Bei Nan was puzzled: "Nan Nan, why are you reading so slowly if you don't recognize it? I thought you were reading the next word."

Yan Xiaonan was certainly reading the words below, and there were also words in the drawing frame, but she couldn't admit it herself.

"The paintings inside are so beautiful, I love looking at them, there are so many colors!" Yan Xiaonan replied innocently.
