Chapter Ninety-Nine: Mother Rabbit Gives Birth to Baby Rabbits

So that's what she was looking at – colors! Bei Nan understands now. Little girls all like bright and colorful things; no wonder she looked for so long.

“Nan Nan likes looking at pictures, right? I’ll bring you back some of these colorful books when I see them in the future,” Xinan said quickly.

Yan Xiaonan smiled happily: "Second brother, bring back any of these comic books you see in the future. Nannan likes them. Also, please don't tear or get them dirty."

Southwest knew that Yan Xiaonan was somewhat of a germaphobe, so making such a request was perfectly normal.

"Grandma, Grandma, come quick! The rabbits have given birth to baby rabbits!" Xuemei called out from the kitchen.

Upon hearing this, everyone dropped what they were doing and ran to the kitchen, with Nan Nan leading the way.

Yan Xiaoqiang had built a small fence around the rabbit to prevent it from running away, and now six snow-white baby rabbits are nestled in their mother's arms, nursing.

Bei Nan stretched out her fingers and counted them one by one. Goodness, there were eight little rabbits.

Cuihua quickly took out a sweet potato, washed it, cut it into pieces, and fed it to the mother rabbit so that she could have milk to feed the baby rabbits.

Upon seeing this, Yan Xiaonan quickly took the sweet potato from Cuihua's hand: "Mom, let me feed her."

While feeding the sweet potato to the mother rabbit, she murmured, "Eat more, and you'll have milk for your baby."

The mother rabbit looked at Yan Xiaonan in surprise and communicated with him telepathically: "I want to eat vegetable leaves, steamed buns are fine too, and I also need to chew on my teeth."

"Oh my god!" Yan Xiaonan was so scared that she sat down on the ground. Could it be that this rabbit had gained sentience, just like Zhongnan?

When everyone saw Yan Xiaonan sitting on the ground, they assumed it was because her legs were sore from squatting for so long, since she was still just a child.

Yan Xiaonan was getting agitated. She started calling out to Zhongnan in her mind. Zhongnan was sleeping by the kang (a heated brick bed) in the main room. Hearing Yan Xiaonan's call, he quickly got up and ran to the kitchen.

When Mother Rabbit saw Zhongnan, she jumped up in fright. "Wolf!" she cried. "Luckily, there's a fence around it, or it would have run all over the house."

Yan Xiaonan tried to communicate with her using her consciousness: "Don't be afraid, Rabbit. She's my pet. She doesn't bite people, and she definitely won't bite you. Don't worry."

The mother rabbit huddled against the fence, trembling: "Really? That's a wolf!"

Yan Xiaonan patted Zhongnan with her hand: "Go get a piece of wood for Mother Rabbit, she needs to gnaw on it."

Southeast let out a howl and ran out. A moment later, it found a piece of wood about the size of Nan Nan's palm, stepped over the fence with its wolf legs, and placed the piece of wood near the rabbit mother's mouth.

When Mother Rabbit saw Wolf's Leg come in, she curled up into a ball and trembled even more violently.

Yan Xiaonan simply let Zhongnan leave. Seeing Zhongnan leave, the mother rabbit quickly jumped to the side of the baby rabbit and continued to nurse it.

Yan Xiaonan called out to Cuihua, "Mom, the rabbit wants to eat vegetable leaves."

Cuihua nodded and went out to find some vegetable leaves.

Bei Nan asked curiously, "Nan Nan, how did you know that Mother Rabbit wanted to eat vegetable leaves?"

Yan Xiaonan rolled her eyes at him: "I know, but I'm not telling you."

Bei Nan got angry and reached out to tug at Yan Xiaonan's braid: "Fine, don't tell me then, what's so strange about that?"

Yan Xiaonan touched her hair with her little hands and burst into tears. Grandma Yan saw it all clearly from the doorway and was so angry that she went back to the main room, picked up a feather duster, and started whipping Bei Nan.

Bei Nan immediately stood up and tried to run away, but Xin Nan grabbed her from behind: "Grandma, Grandma, I caught him! Smack him! He dared to bully Nan Nan, so smack him hard!"

Grandma Yan was really not polite, and slapped Bei Nan's arm: "You dared to bully my darling, you dared to pull Nan Nan's braid."

Bei Nan was pinned down by the Southwest and couldn't move, so he could only loudly beg for mercy: "Grandma, I was wrong, I won't do it again, I apologize to Nan Nan, Nan Nan, please forgive me, I will never dare to do it again."

Seeing that Grandma had stopped, Southwest also released North. North glared at Southwest fiercely and said, "You wait."

Southwest ignored him completely, clapped his hands, and ran to Nan Nan's side: "Nan Nan, don't be afraid. With your second brother here, no one can bully you."

Nan Nan smiled sweetly at Southwest, and the two of them fed the rabbit mother sweet potatoes, one piece at a time.

Cuihua brought in some vegetable leaves and threw them into the fence. Sure enough, Mother Rabbit dropped her sweet potato and started eating the vegetable leaves.

After looking at it, Southwest said to South, "South is so smart, she knows that Mother Rabbit wants to eat leaves."

Grandma Yan nodded with a smile and pulled Yan Xiaonan up: "My dear, I'll have your dad dig a cellar here later. Can you help Grandma decide how big it should be?"

Bei Nan was puzzled: "Grandma, why did you dig a cellar, and inside your house no less?"

Grandma Yan now hates Bei Nan and considers anyone who bullies her precious child a bad person.

"Go away, have you finished your homework? Don't let your older brother beat you."

Bei Nan was overjoyed; she had exchanged two comic books for two weeks' worth of homework—what a bargain!

Yan Xiaonan looked at Bei Nan with sympathy: "You'll have your turn to regret it later."

Yan Xiaoqiang returned covered in snow. Cuihua quickly helped him brush off the snow, and Xuemei thoughtfully brought him hot water and a towel to warm him up.

Yan Xiaonan saw this and ran to her grandmother's room, took out some malted milk powder, and asked Southwest to make a cup for Yan Xiaoqiang.

Seeing Yan Xiaoqiang approaching, Yan Xiaonan quickly pushed the cup of malted milk powder in front of him: "Dad, drink some malted milk powder."

Yan Xiaoqiang picked up his daughter and held the cup to Yan Xiaonan's lips: "Daughter, drink a sip first, and Dad will drink the rest."

Yan Xiaoqiang had noticed Yan Xiaonan's actions long ago, and his heart was filled with warmth. Listening to his mother was the right thing to do; he would live with Nannan from now on.

Yan Xiaonan took a sip from the cup. The malted milk powder of this era was really delicious, much better than coffee. Sigh, I miss coffee so much, especially mocha coffee, with that layer of cream. Hmm, I can't think about it anymore.

Yan Xiaoqiang was drinking malted milk powder when his little daughter told him that the mother rabbit had given birth to eight baby rabbits, and that the baby rabbits could be sold for money when they grew up, blah blah blah.

When Yan Xiaoqiang heard that his little girl's hair had been pulled painfully by Bei Nan, his expression changed. His originally smiling face immediately turned into a long face, and Bei Nan's expression also changed.

Yan Xiaonan chuckled inwardly, thinking, "Serves you right for bullying me!" But she quickly steered the conversation back on track: "Dad, Grandma beat Third Brother up really badly, and he even apologized to me. I forgave him."

Hearing that Bei Nan had been disciplined by his mother and that his daughter had forgiven him, Yan Xiaoqiang's expression softened. He said to Bei Nan, "Go write a self-criticism. You're not allowed to eat if you don't write it well."

North and South?

Yan Xiaonan almost died laughing. Bei Nan had given all her comic books to Xin Nan in order to avoid writing, but she still couldn't escape the fate of having to write.

Haha, what goes around comes around, let's see who he gets away with.
