Chapter Thirty-Four: Grandma Yan is Very Calm

Yan Xiaonan was wearing her pajamas and was shivering from the cold. Fortunately, she was able to stand up by holding onto the trees. She looked around and wondered what the green things were. Oh, they were probably wolf eyes.

So many wolves! Yan Xiaonan's legs went weak. He was going to be devoured by wolves today. Sigh.

A pack of wolves rushed over and circled around Yan Xiaonan. Yan Xiaonan, unwilling to back down, straightened her back and said, "Come on, I'm not afraid of you. I'll just let you eat me."

With a roar, the wolves automatically parted. It turned out to be a Siberian tiger. Yan Xiaonan was annoyed. He was so small that he couldn't even be eaten by a wolf. Why was he getting involved in the tiger hunt?

The Siberian tiger walked up to Yan Xiaonan, looked at the little one in front of it, rubbed its huge head against Yan Xiaonan, and then lay down in front of her. A strong, fishy stench rushed into Yan Xiaonan's nose, making her sneeze incessantly.

However, the Siberian tiger was so warm that Yan Xiaonan couldn't stand the cold anymore, so he pounced on the tiger's belly and snuggled up to it comfortably.

The howls of wolves rose and fell, their angry roars echoing down the mountain. How dare they harm the mountain god! We'll devour you all!

The old bachelor had just arrived home and hadn't even had a chance to cook himself a meal when the howling of wolves terrified him. He immediately hid in his room, barricading the door shut before finally letting out a sigh of relief.

That widow Zhang must have been killed by wolves. Serves her right. Who told her to be so vicious? She didn't even spare a one-year-old baby. She only fought with an adult. Was it necessary to attack a little baby? No wonder she brought death to her husband.

Alas, it's such a pity about that little baby. He was so beautiful, and now he's been eaten by wolves. The Yan family must be heartbroken.

The howling of wolves lasted all night, interspersed with the roars of tigers, startling Village Chief Ma so much that he jumped up, told his wife to call the children over, and went to lock the door tightly.

Mrs. Ma was also surprised and uncertain. What was going on? Village Chief Ma took out his pipe and started smoking: "Something big is about to happen."

Mrs. Ma was so frightened that she jumped up. What was so serious?

"When I was a child, my grandfather told me a story. Thousands of years ago, this mountain was called Devil Mountain. It was said that there were packs of tigers and wolves inside, so no one dared to go into the mountain."

The wild animals wouldn't come down the mountain, and it gradually became known as Mushroom Mountain. One year, someone in the village killed someone and dumped the body in the mountain to frame the wild animals.

The wild beasts roared in the mountains, and no one knew what they meant until the next day when they came down from the mountains, found the perpetrator, and bit him to death. Only then did everyone realize that it wasn't the wild beasts that killed the man, but the man who killed him.

Mrs. Ma shuddered. Had someone tried to harm someone tonight? What should we do? What should we do?

Village Chief Ma took another drag of his cigarette: "Go to sleep. We don't dare go out now. Let's wait until dawn and see."

Apart from the Yan family, no one in the village slept well. The howling wolves made them very uneasy. The old people all knew the story the village chief told, and for a time, everyone was filled with fear.

The rooster's crowing, which was usually a daily ritual, was silent today. The chickens in the yard were huddled in their coops, trembling with fear. The villagers peered out through the cracks in their windows, and didn't even dare to open their gates.

Village Chief Ma wasn't so lucky. He still had to go to the village committee to ring the bell and get everyone to work in the fields. As the village chief, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and walk out of the main room. Sister-in-law Ma followed behind her tremblingly, but Village Chief Ma chased her back. "If one of you dies, so be it. What will happen to the children if you all die?"

He cautiously opened the gate to his yard, finding it completely silent outside. He told his wife to quickly close the gate, and then he rushed towards the village committee.

I was on tenterhooks the whole way, looking around anxiously, but thankfully I arrived at the village committee safely. Of course, there was no one there either; they probably didn't dare to come out. Village Chief Ma closed the gate tightly, sat down in a chair, and fell into deep thought, wondering whether he should ring the bell.

Xuemei was the first to wake up. Her room was the furthest from the main room, and she always kept her door tightly closed when she slept, so she didn't absorb much of the sleeping potion. But after getting up, she felt that something was wrong.

The door to the main room was open, and she thought her mother was feeding the chickens in the morning, but the chicken coop hadn't been touched. Seeing that the gate to the yard was also open, she ran to the gate and looked around, but there was no one outside.

I rushed to Grandma's room to check, but Grandma was sleeping soundly. Then I ran to my parents' room, but they were also sleeping soundly. But where was Nan Nan?

"Mother, Mother," she called several times but he didn't wake up. Xuemei knew something was wrong, so she ran into Dongnan's room. He was snoring loudly. She quickly used cold water to wake him up. When she saw that Dongnan had opened his eyes, she said, "Dongnan, something has happened! Nannan is missing."

The words "Nan Nan is missing" brought Dongnan to his senses. He jumped up and rushed straight to his parents' room. Xuemei quickly grabbed Dongnan's clothes and chased after him.

Nan Nan was indeed gone, and her parents couldn't wake her up either. While getting dressed, Dong Nan asked Xue Mei to prepare some cold water. She then ran to her grandmother's room, and after a while, her grandmother woke up groggily, feeling her head throbbing and dizzy. Xue Mei promptly brought a cool towel to her grandmother's face.

After taking a sip of tea, he finally came to his senses. Seeing Xuemei's hesitant expression, his heart pounded: "Xuemei, is something wrong with Nannan?"

Seeing Xue Mei with tears in her eyes and no answer, he quickly got out of bed and ran to Cui Hua's room. Dong Nan was washing Cui Hua and Yan Xiaoqiang's faces with cold water. He looked at where Nan Nan was sleeping and found it empty. He was shocked and quickly asked Xue Mei what was going on.

Xuemei was confused too. She recounted how she had gotten up and left the main room and courtyard gates wide open, only to find that Nannan was missing, and how she had splashed Dongnan with cold water to wake him up. Grandma Yan remained silent for a moment before saying, "Xuemei, go to my room and see if the cornmeal is still there."

Xuemei's heart tightened, and she rushed over. When she saw what was there, she panicked even more and cried out, "Grandma, Grandma, it's all gone! All the food is gone! I've looked everywhere, it's all been stolen!"

As the saying goes, "A tall tree catches the wind," and "Wealth tempts people." How could I forget that? Yesterday, my family bought so much grain in a big way. Although we sold some of it, we clearly told people that we had surplus grain. Who else would we steal from if not you?

Yesterday, someone had bad intentions. Last night, they used sleeping potion to knock out their own family members and then came to steal their grain. As for Nan Nan, I guess either the little girl was awake and the thief was afraid that her crying would wake up the family, so he simply took her with him, or someone had bad intentions and was planning to do something bad.

Southeast had completely woken up Cuihua and her husband. When Cuihua heard that Nannan had been stolen, it was like a bolt from the blue. She kept pacing on the kang (a heated brick bed), turning over here and there, afraid that the little girl had been kicked somewhere while she was asleep.
