Fortunately, it was freezing cold, so the tea cooled down quickly and was only lukewarm, not hot enough to burn the skin. But the little girl was still furious that a child had hit her like that.
She picked up the broom by the door, ready to sweep the southwest corner, but was slapped to the ground by Old Man Chen, who was watching from the side. Old Man Chen went into the kitchen, took a tattered bag, and threw it in front of her younger sister.
He said in a heavy tone, "These are what you and your husband brought. Take them back and don't come again."
The little sister was stunned. Her father had never hit her before. She looked at her father in disbelief and said, "You hit me."
Her husband pulled her up and said to Cuihua, "Second sister, I'm sorry. Why don't you take the little girl to the village doctor? I'll pay for it."
After saying that, she started rummaging through her pockets. She emptied all her pockets before finally pulling out five cents. Grandma Yan had already put on her shoes, so she grabbed Nan Nan and ran outside.
While running, she shouted Yan Xiaoqiang's name. Cuihua hurriedly chased after her, but her mother pulled her back and handed her her shoes. Cuihua quickly put on her shoes, grabbed the quilt from the kang (a heated brick bed), and chased after her.
When Yan Xiaoqiang heard his daughter crying, he knew something was wrong. He dropped his things and ran into the house, just in time to run into his mother carrying Nan Nan as she rushed out.
He quickly took it. The sight of Nan Nan's face covered in blood brought tears to the heart of this strong rural man. Luckily, he knew where the village doctor lived, so he ran at the speed of a 100-meter sprint.
They left Cuihua, Grandma Yan, and the children far behind. The eldest sister and her husband never expected their little sister to be so heartless, nor did they expect that this little girl was actually the family's treasure.
A sympathetic look fell on the younger sister, who was still staring blankly at the departing figure, muttering, "I just wanted to make her trip and fall. She's just a little girl, why are you so nervous?"
Cuihua's mother picked up the cornmeal from the ground and handed it to her son-in-law, saying, "You should go now. Every time you come, you bring some moths. I'm an old woman, and I can't take it anymore."
The brother-in-law glanced at the bag, didn't take it, abandoned his wife, and turned to walk home. The younger sister saw this, quickly took the bag, and chased after him. The older sister shook her head, thinking, "This girl is hopeless."
Old Chen asked his eldest daughter and wife to stay home and cook, while he took his son and headed to the village doctor's house. His eldest son-in-law saw this and quickly followed.
Old Man Chen nodded secretly. She was at least somewhat intelligent; otherwise, his eldest daughter's family wouldn't have come again. They were all troublemakers, and it was exhausting to watch them.
Yan Xiaonan was in excruciating pain. She was wearing too many clothes and wanted to touch her wound, but her hand couldn't reach it. So she decided to be willful and howled at the top of her lungs, making everyone in her family cry.
The village doctor was at home tending to herbal medicines when he heard the heart-wrenching cry. Startled, he rushed out and, sure enough, a man carrying a child came running towards him.
He quickly opened the door wide and led Yan Xiaoqiang inside. Upon closer inspection, good heavens, that was quite a fall; look at his face covered in blood.
Yan Xiaonan stopped crying as soon as she saw the village doctor, which amazed the doctor. Such a young child is really clever.
Carefully wipe the bloodstains clean with iodine, revealing a two-centimeter-long cut. The blood had clotted and stopped flowing, but it still needed to be disinfected.
She said gently to Yan Xiaonan, "Little sister, it will hurt a little when it's being disinfected, so you can't move, or it will hurt even more."
Yan Xiaonan couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Grandma Wolf, you're lying. And it hurts a little, it'll hurt like hell!"
The village doctor was definitely a good one. While attracting Yan Xiaonan's attention, he started to touch her. It really hurt. Yan Xiaonan grimaced and endured it. She had to get through this ordeal eventually.
Grandma, still out of breath from running, had just caught her breath and, seeing Nannan covered in yellow iodine, asked worriedly, "Doctor, will it leave scars?"
The village doctor nodded, saying that a scar might remain, but not necessarily. The child is too young, and if he grows well, it will fade away gradually.
Cuihua quickly asked, "Doctor, how can I make it grow well?"
The doctor glanced at the family. This little girl was lucky. Ordinary people would just apply some medicine and be fine; they wouldn't be so nervous.
"Avoid eating foods that are considered 'heaty' or 'inflammatory,' such as fish. Avoid eating dark-colored foods, such as soy sauce. Prevent the wound from becoming infected and keep it dry."
Everyone nodded, remembering it clearly. Cuihua's father rushed over, panting, and asked, "Little doctor, thank you so much! How much?"
The village doctor recognized him immediately; it was the Chen family's precious guest returning. So he had to be polite: "Give me five cents. It's just disinfection and a piece of gauze. It's not worth much."
Southeast was more attentive and stepped forward, saying, "Doctor, could you buy some more gauze and iodine for us, in case it gets wet and needs changing?"
The village doctor nodded, took the one yuan that the grandmother handed over, and gave her a large bag of gauze and iodine.
Yan Xiaonan was utterly speechless. It was just a small opening, yet all that gauze could have bound her up like a mummy.
Cuihua tried to hug Yan Xiaonan, but Yan Xiaoqiang turned away. Cuihua felt sad, realizing it was all her fault; she should have brought the rope with her.
Old Man Chen felt a pang of sadness. Of his three daughters, this second daughter was the kindest and gentlest, and she had married into the best family.
That little girl must be the apple of everyone's eye. Didn't you see that even Old Mrs. Yan came along out of concern? Sigh, they even gave us so many gifts. How can we face our in-laws?
But Old Man Chen wasn't one to mince words, and the atmosphere became awkward. Yan Xiaonan was at a loss; she was injured and still had to worry about him.
He raised his hand towards Cuihua and clearly called out, "Mommy, hug me."
Cuihua quickly took her daughter and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her face: "My darling, it's all my fault, I didn't take good care of you, it's all my fault."
Grandma Yan patted Yan Xiaoqiang and said, "Come on, let's go back to the Chen family's house. Let Nannan get some rest." She then gently wrapped the little girl in a blanket, and the family slowly walked towards the Chen family's house.
The table was already set with food to entertain the guests, but apart from the eldest sister's two daughters and a boy who were drooling as they looked at the dishes, the eldest sister and Cuihua's mother were standing at the door waiting for them.
Seeing a group of people in the distance, Cuihua's mother quickly ran out. When she saw the little girl with a bandage on her head, she said with heartache, "Don't be afraid, my dear. Grandma chased them away."
Yan Xiaonan wasn't actually a one-year-old child, and she was touched. What a kind and simple family they were! She thought she should help them out if she had the chance in the future.
The eldest sister's two daughters looked at Yan Xiaonan with envy. Such a little girl, so many people dote on her. If my mom and dad treated me like that, I'd be willing to die.
