Chapter 20: It's you again?

"Such a good thing?" Xu Ningyan nodded quickly.

The sales clerk gave Xu Ningyan a wink, signaling her to go around to the back door.

He then told the person next to him to cover for him for a while, and then went to the back door.

At the back door, the salesperson waved to Xu Ningyan, signaling her to enter the courtyard.

He then said in a low voice, "You can only choose two things, no more! I only did this because I feel a connection with you—"

Xu Ningyan immediately nodded to show that she understood: "Sister, I understand! You're just doing this because you care about me! I'm already so grateful for your kindness! Besides, I can choose two items. If I still have reservations, would I even be human?"

The saleswoman felt relieved, thinking she hadn't made a mistake in choosing the person. She had acted impulsively and had actually regretted it as soon as she left, but now she could finally suppress that regret.

"What should I call you, sister? Although we don't have anything fancy in the countryside, I'll bring you some fresh vegetables and fruits when they come out. Please don't mind if you don't find them too nice."

The saleswoman became even happier. "My surname is Hu, and everyone calls me Sister Hu. You can call me Sister Hu too! If you need anything in the future, just come to me. I'll save it for you if I have it!"

The two became increasingly animated in their conversation.

In the back warehouse, Sister Hu greeted the custodian inside and led Xu Ningyan inside.

Xu Ningyan was very self-aware and only picked a green tin thermos with a slightly deformed outer shell and a piece of grayish-blue cotton cloth.

Seeing that Xu Ningyan was so sensible and didn't look at the big, in-demand items, Sister Hu was even more satisfied.

After paying the money, Xu Ningyan grabbed a handful of White Rabbit milk candies and stuffed them into Sister Hu's hands.

Sister Hu refused to accept it, and after a long struggle, she finally dropped the candy and ran away.

After leaving the supply and marketing cooperative, Xu Ningyan found a deserted dead-end alley and put all her belongings into her spatial storage.

After a long day of running around, she was hungry. She had checked the time at the supply and marketing cooperative earlier and it was almost 2 p.m. The state-run restaurant was already out of food.

Apart from state-run restaurants, there were no other places to buy food.

So she simply took out two big steamed buns from her spatial storage and ate them, then drank a carton of milk to fill her stomach. After wiping her mouth, Xu Ningyan decided to go find the black market.

She wanted to stock up on some Moutai from this era, which was a truly high-quality product.

Unfortunately, even with a wine ticket, you can't buy any; you need someone to give you a written approval.

She wondered, if the supply and marketing cooperatives didn't have it, the black market should have it, right?

Moreover, she expects to deal with the black market frequently in the future, so today is a good opportunity to learn about it.

As an outsider, she was completely clueless about the black market.

I wouldn't dare to just grab anyone on the street and ask where the black market is. I'd probably be locked up in a dark room before I even found it.

However, those novels weren't read for nothing; the locations were all summarized, generally in the suburbs, behind deserted alleys, near hospitals, or in small woods, and so on.

She glanced at her current location, lost in thought, and before she knew it, she had strayed further and further off course.

When she came to her senses, she realized that she didn't know which alley she had turned into.

The area is dilapidated; many courtyards are uninhabited, and the walls have collapsed, revealing yards overgrown with weeds.

There were a few houses where people lived, but their gates were all tightly closed, and there wasn't a single person to be seen nearby.

Xu Ningyan didn't dare to stay any longer. This place didn't look very safe, so it was best to leave as soon as possible.

Just as I was about to turn a corner and leave the alley, I heard a noise ahead.

Xu Ningyan stopped warily and listened carefully for a while.

"Hurry up, haven't you guys eaten? There are so many of you, and you can't even handle him alone? What's the point of keeping you all here?"

"Boss, this guy is really tough. If we leave him alive, he might escape. He saw us, so maybe—"

Xu Ningyan's heart skipped a beat when she heard this. Was someone about to die?

After a moment of silence, the voice seemed to have made up its mind: "Then leave no survivors, and get rid of them quickly!"

Not long after he finished speaking, there were muffled thuds of fists and sticks hitting people, along with a few muffled groans.

It sounds somewhat familiar.

Xu Ningyan peeked out and what she saw almost made her scream.

Not far ahead, her powerful backer, Gu Zhiyuan, was being attacked by a dozen people wielding sticks and knives.

Why would the big shot be in the county town? Xu Ningyan was taken aback at first, but then flew into a rage after seeing that the big shot had almost been slashed.

Who wants to mess with her sugar daddy?

The golden thigh was her hope for a life of ease and success. If this golden thigh were to be damaged, wouldn't her life be in jeopardy?

To ruin someone's future is an irreconcilable enmity!

Xu Ningyan clenched her fist!

Fortunately, Gu Zhiyuan looked refined but was actually quite skilled. Unfortunately, his opponents outnumbered him and had weapons, so he was at a disadvantage.

However, Gu Zhiyuan was also a ruthless person. Even if he suffered minor injuries, took a stick or a punch, he could always reduce the opponent's fighting strength by one person.

Three or four people had already collapsed around him, but he himself was also about to give up.

Just as another blow was about to hit his head, he ducked, twisted to the side, grabbed the other man's hand, and snapped his wrist with a crack. Then something slashed across his other arm; first a chill, then excruciating pain accompanied by splattering blood.

Gu Zhiyuan staggered back two steps, and seeing four or five people still surrounding him with sinister smiles, he knew that he was probably going to die here today.

He took a deep breath, his expression unchanged, and with a flick of his toe, gently lifted the stick that had fallen to the ground and held it in his hand, calmly looking at the other person.

Just then, a series of hurried footsteps approached from afar, accompanied by a woman's anxious voice: "Officer, it's just ahead, hurry! Otherwise, someone will die!"

Then a strange man's voice said, "Is this the place? You few come with me, the rest of you flank from both sides!"

"yes!"

Gu Zhiyuan breathed a sigh of relief without showing any emotion.

The people opposite him were stunned, and then they looked at each other.

The leader gritted his teeth and shouted, "Let's go!"

He was about to run when his subordinate grabbed him: "Boss, what about him? He saw us—"

"What time is it? If we don't run now and get caught by the police, we're all going to die! As long as we're alive, we can always make a comeback. We'll talk about it another time—" The leader shook off his subordinate's hand, climbed over the courtyard wall, and disappeared without a trace.

The remaining few henchmen looked at each other, then, ignoring the others still lying on the ground groaning and dead, scattered and ran away.

Once everyone had disappeared from sight, Gu Zhiyuan, who had been holding his breath, suddenly relaxed. He swayed precariously, barely managing to stand by the stick in his hand, and looked up ahead.

I was a little puzzled; why hadn't the police arrived yet?

The thought had barely crossed my mind when I saw a very familiar figure appear before me.

Even the usually composed Gu Zhiyuan stared in surprise, his eyes widening: "It's you again?"
