Chapter 374 Departure (1/2)

At five o'clock in the morning, as dawn was breaking, Qiao Wanyue led the Lu family to the train station.

She had intended not to let anyone deliver the package, but when she opened the door, a large group of people came rushing in. They were all neighbors from Xiahe Village. Yang Dongliang and Guo Yushu stood at the door with their men. In the winter, when the temperature was minus twenty degrees Celsius, they were shivering from the cold.

Upon seeing Qiao Wanyue, Yang Dongliang revealed a simple and honest smile.

Yang Dongliang has changed a lot in the past two years. His vision is no longer limited to Xiahe Village, but looks to a wider area. He wants the people of Xiahe Village to go out and also wants to bring in more talents. Beneath his honest face lies a heart that is dedicated to the people and the country.

He never dared to imagine how much a brigade leader could do. He watched Qiao Wanyue go from being a messenger in Xiaohe Village to the director of the commune, and then to the factory director. She walked a path that others couldn't walk in twenty years.

She knew her own path very well. When it was time to give up, she gracefully relinquished the fame and fortune that others pursued their whole lives. This awareness and vision were something this old man could learn from for a lifetime.

He saw her off as she left.

Qiao Wanyue opened the door and saw a large group of people, which softened her heart.

Under the dim yellow light, the villagers' eyes shone brightly.

The pre-arranged car had already arrived in the distance.

Qiao Wanyue cleared her throat. "Thank you all for coming today. I will come back again in the future. This is where Lu Yunzhou and I are from. My mother-in-law is also here. Please take good care of her during this time. I will call the brigade often."

The villagers chattered amongst themselves, and although it was noisy, their words of concern touched our hearts.

"Captain, let everyone go back, it's terribly cold."

Yang Dongliang wiped his eyes. "It wasn't me who organized it. Everyone wanted to see you off, saying it was to give you a proper send-off."

Qiao Wanyue said, "Aheng, now that you're up, come with us."

Lu Heng readily agreed.

Qiao Wanyue got into the car under everyone's gaze. Watching the car leave, the villagers felt more distressed than if their own children were going on a long trip. They all knew in their hearts that Wanyue was a phoenix.

There's no room for her here.

She has a much wider world to explore.

The car swayed and rocked, and the people inside were drowsy.

"Aheng, you should enroll in night school when you have time, so you can learn some characters."

Lu Heng scratched his head; reading books and newspapers was what he disliked the most.

"I think I'm doing pretty well now." He now drives a car at the factory, earning seventy or eighty yuan a month. Occasionally, he gets a subsidy for long-distance driving, bringing in about one hundred yuan, which is enough to support his family.

Qiao Wanyue: "If the factory closes down, where will you go?"

Lu Heng was taken aback.

He hadn't considered that possibility.

Qiao Wanyue continued, "Reading books and newspapers isn't about making you do anything, but about giving you more choices in the future. Do you want to drive a car your whole life instead of sitting indoors commanding thousands of troops?"

“But I’m already twenty-five or twenty-six.” He was about the same age as Lu Yunzhou.

“You’re twenty-five or twenty-six, not halfway to the grave.”

Lu Heng...that's true.

The main problem is that his child is already one or two years old. It would be so embarrassing if he had to study with his child in the future.
