The old lady's expression softened a bit, but her tone was still somewhat stiff. "Hmm."
Qiao Wanyue quickly helped the old lady up, "Grandma Yang, let me help you to rest."
The old lady was getting on in years, and after going through this ordeal, her legs were trembling a little. When Qiao Wanyue arrived, she clung to Qiao Wanyue's arms with both hands, her back still ramrod straight.
Stepping into my own yard, my body suddenly went limp.
"Yunzhou's wife, thank you," the old lady said, holding her hands.
Qiao Wanyue patted the back of her hand, "Grandma Yang, go back and rest."
The old lady went to check on her daughter-in-law again. She had already been coaxed to sleep by Lu Rong, so she went to sleep with peace of mind.
As Qiao Wanyue left Yang Dazhuang's house, she encountered several burly men carrying Yang Huaiyuan, who was soaking wet, and women carrying Qiao Shanshan, who was also soaking wet, walking out of the village entrance.
Both of them were soaked to the bone. Yang Huaiyuan, being a man, was alright, but Qiao Shanshan's clothes were completely drenched, almost transparent. Although it was night, the dark clouds had dispersed, and the moon shone on the earth, her private parts could be vaguely seen.
Qiao Wanyue withdrew her gaze and followed Lu Rong back to the Yang family home. The eldest Lu couple stood in the corner, holding melon seeds in their hands.
"Where's your dad?" Lu Rong asked.
Sister-in-law Lu gestured with her lips, indicating that she was next door.
Lu Rong rolled his eyes, washed his hands in the yard, and went into the house expressionlessly.
"Wanyue, go back to sleep. We have to go back to your parents' home tomorrow."
Qiao Wanyue originally did not plan to return to her parents' home, but Lu Rong said that since she came from her second uncle's family, they could skip Qiao Sheng's family, but they had to go to her second uncle's family. This was a matter of etiquette, and it was also for Qiao Wanyue's sake. After all, she was from her maternal family, and if she was bullied, someone would stand up for her.
Qiao Wanyue entered the house. The noise from next door was still going on. She felt smelly as soon as she entered the house. She went into her space, took a bath with the spiritual spring, and changed into new pajamas. Only then did the faint smell in her nostrils disappear.
Qiao Wanyue went to bed, but she couldn't fall asleep at all. Looking at the roof beam, scenes from her previous life flashed through her mind like a revolving lantern.
For the first half of her life, she worked like a slave in the Qiao family.
For the rest of his life, he worked like a slave in the Yang family.
She had never met a lover, someone who cared for her. Everyone taught her how to love and care for others, but no one ever taught her how to love herself. Just as her consciousness was awakening, it was cruelly pushed back down.
Everyone calls her Mrs. Yang, Huaiyuan's wife, and Qiao Sheng's eldest daughter.
But no one ever called her—Qiao Wanyue.
She is herself.
That suppressed, hidden moment seemed to break free of its constraints, from the initial scattered specks to the final gathering of a sky full of stars. She stood in the darkness, and suddenly a sky full of stars appeared before her eyes.
A sky full of baby's breath that belongs only to her.
As she watched the beam of light unfold, the smile on her lips gradually widened.
Gradually, I drifted off to sleep.
The next day, she slept until dawn, got dressed, and went outside. Sister-in-law Lu was holding Lu Hui in the yard, basking in the sun.
"Sister-in-law, you're awake."
"Mom said you were tired last night and wanted you to get some more sleep. Mom has prepared all the gifts. See if it's enough. If not, there are some steamed buns that Mom made this morning in the kitchen." Sister-in-law Lu pointed to the gifts in the yard.
Qiao Wanyue glanced at the contents: one pound of meat, two pounds of mung bean cakes, three pounds of milk candy, and some fruit that Qiao Wanyue had brought back. Lu Rong packed them all into a box.
Qiao Wanyue felt a warmth in her heart. "That's enough."
