Su Chenhao nodded and led his younger brother into the house. He brought him along to help him adapt to his new life. It was better than keeping him alone at home; he wasn't comfortable letting him go out to play by himself. With adults supervising him at the Su family home, his younger brother's nature would be better tempered.
When Li Meihua saw Su Chenqiu, she quickly walked over and casually patted the child's head.
She's good-looking, but too thin.
Su Chenhao nodded, "My younger brother has suffered a lot these past two years, and he hasn't grown any taller."
Thinking of the pitiful state of the motherless child, Li Meihua turned around, took an egg from the bowl, and placed it in the child's hand, saying with concern...
"Eat an egg first, and then drink two more bowls of porridge later, so you can grow taller."
She had originally boiled two eggs, one for Manli and one for her daughter, but seeing how pitiful the child looked, she couldn't bear it and gave the child the eggs instead.
Su Chenqiu remembered the last time she ate eggs was on her birthday. Her mother was still alive then, and she couldn't help but shed tears when she looked at the eggs in her hand.
"Why are you crying, child?" Li Meihua was startled and wiped away his tears with her hand. "Did your aunt say something that you didn't like?"
"No, I just miss my mom. The last time I ate eggs was on my birthday, and she cooked them for me." Su Chenqiu calmed down and wiped away her tears.
"Poor child, things will get better from now on, don't cry." Li Meihua hugged the child and comforted him.
Su Chenhao felt terrible. A simple egg had made his younger brother cry so bitterly. What had he done all these years? He felt incredibly guilty for leaving his brother at home.
When Qiao Xiaoni entered the room, she saw this scene. "What happened?"
Li Meihua wiped the tears off the child's face with her sleeve, then pulled the child to sit down on the kang (a heated brick bed), before turning to speak to her daughter.
"It's nothing, he just misses his mother."
Li Meihua has experienced the feeling of a child without a mother being unloved, and she understands it very well, which is why she feels so uneasy.
Qiao Xiaoni looked at Su Chenhao, whose expression was also not good, and quickly stepped forward to smooth things over.
"Mom, soak the rabbit meat in water later. If we come back early for lunch today, we'll stew the rabbit meat."
Upon hearing that they were going to eat rabbit, Su Chenqiu's mood instantly improved. "Sister, you caught a rabbit!"
"It's not a rabbit we caught, it's a rabbit we found. We're having stewed rabbit for lunch today, would you like some braised rabbit?"
"I want to eat it!" Su Chenqiu replied quickly.
"If you want to eat, don't think about those messy things. Hurry up and get on the kang (heated brick bed) to eat breakfast. The porridge will get cold and won't taste good." Qiao Xiaoni walked over and sat down next to him, ladled a bowl of porridge and placed it in front of him.
Su Chenqiu felt that the Su family was really warm, and turned to Su Chenhao, saying, "Brother, come up and eat!"
Seeing the smile on his younger brother's face, Su Chenhao felt better and slipped on the kang (a heated brick bed) to sit on the other side of his brother.
Li Meihua specially cooked a large pot of porridge with a bowl of rice, just so that everyone would be full and have the energy to work, instead of counting the grains of rice when making porridge as before.
The pickled vegetables on the table were prepared by Qiao Xiaoni the night before, with a few small chilies and a spoonful of sesame oil added. If Li Meihua hadn't been watching, she definitely would have added two more spoonfuls of sesame oil.
After breakfast, they loaded their belongings into the truck, and Qiao Haisheng went with them to town, sitting in the small truck.
Qiao Xiaoshan spat twice on his hands, rubbed them together a few times, then got on the small truck, pushed off with his feet, and rode away.
