102 Sports Meet
While Luo Da drove his small truck around in circles, and Li Wei lay on the sofa, half asleep, Cheng Fei and Ding Anping returned leisurely.
Sun Ying, who had been instructed by Li Wei, secretly came up to deliver a message to Li Wei.
After Xiao Sun went downstairs, Li Wei quickly sat up, rubbed her eyes to wake herself up, crawled over to get the internal phone and dialed her aunt's number. A little while later, Ding Anping came upstairs.
When Li Wei saw it was him, it was exactly what she wanted. She wanted to ask him about his and her aunt's recent situation, but suddenly felt it was inappropriate. It seemed like she was prying into someone's life. She quickly put on a stern face and looked at Ding Anping with a serious gaze, making Ding Anping feel very uneasy.
Finally, Ding Anping couldn't hold back any longer and asked, "What's wrong with you? Is there a problem?" Why does this girl's eyes look so much like the way they interrogate criminals?
Li Wei frowned and nodded slightly: "Yes, I don't know how to tell you, I'm a little hesitant to say it."
Upon hearing this, Ding Anping realized that the girl had encountered some trouble. Their relationship was now quite close, so he quickly and firmly replied, "Tell me, what's wrong? I'll do my best to help you if I can." What serious problem could this little girl possibly have?
Li Wei sighed: "I'm really embarrassed to say this, I'm afraid you won't be able to handle the blow."
Upon hearing this, Ding Anping realized it was related to him and became serious: "Just tell me, I'm a grown man, it's alright, go ahead and say it, I'm listening." Could it be that Grandpa Cheng and Grandma Cheng regretted it and stopped him from seeing Cheng Fei? Or was this girl just fooling him?
Li Wei then said with a firm gaze, "To be honest, my grandparents are very worried about you. They're concerned that my aunt, being so young, might be fooled by you. Mainly, your relationship wasn't this close before, so why are you suddenly going to be officially dating? They're worried that you're playing tricks on my aunt. That's why they specifically asked me to observe whether you're being genuine or not. If I find anything amiss, I need to go back and report so my grandpa can take action. You know how close we are; I really can't bear to keep you in the dark, so I'm here to kindly remind you. But doing this makes me feel bad for my grandparents and aunt. You're really putting me in a difficult position!"
He finished speaking with a worried look on his face.
Ding Anping was slightly surprised: "Is that so? Don't you know about our affairs? What's there to worry about? Didn't you tell your grandparents? You've seen my character over the years, haven't you?"
Li Wei looked at him like he was an idiot: "What did I say? That you were drunk and promiscuous? Do you still want to go to my grandma's house? That you were drunk and promiscuous, and that you made my aunt fall for you? Do you still want to go home? What am I supposed to say? I have to say something nice about you, right? But I don't even know how you won my aunt's heart. How can I be in the mood to say something nice for you? I'm seriously lacking in confidence!"
The last sentence is the key.
Ding Anping wasn't stupid. After a little thought, he understood Li Wei's meaning. He knew this girl was cunning. It seemed she had come to check on the results of her role as a strategist. However, it wasn't impossible for Grandpa Cheng and Grandma Cheng to have Li Wei keep an eye on him. Others might not be able to handle this, but Li Xiaoming was generally reliable.
Although it was a little embarrassing, Li Wei wasn't just anyone. There was nothing she couldn't say. So, she straightforwardly replied, "Then what do you want to know? Tell me!"
Li Wei's expression finally softened. She crawled closer, seemingly regarding Ding Anping as one of her own. Smiling, she said, "How exactly did you convince my aunt to believe you that day? There are no outsiders here. Tell me, okay? I promised to support you both, both emotionally and materially. If I didn't… you know the consequences, don't you?"
Ding Anping wasn't afraid of Ding Anni's personality, but he was afraid of Li Wei. He had seen through her years ago; once she set her mind on something, she would use any underhanded trick or scheme, and you still couldn't do anything about it. Because she could always find your weakness.
Ding Anping said helplessly, "Actually, it's nothing. I just met your aunt outside and explained what happened to her in a nice way. She didn't believe me, so I did what you said and threatened to commit suicide to prove my point. She hesitated a bit. Just then, my dad was there having dinner with some people, including some of his colleagues and friends. I was going all out. I made a promise in front of everyone... Anyway, you know what happened."
Li Wei felt it was a bit too easy. She stared at him in disbelief: "It's that simple? This isn't like my aunt's usual righteous and indignant style. I thought I'd have to skin you alive. You're not just fooling me, are you?"
Ding Anping was displeased: "Simple? Do you know who those people were besides my dad? Let me put it this way, 90% of the top leaders in the city were there. I essentially made a guarantee and swore an oath in front of the entire city. It was a much bigger spectacle than when I joined the Youth League or the Party. I've never been so humiliated in my life. Even now, they still laugh at me when they see me. I guess that's how I'll be in their eyes for the rest of my life. Tell me, do you know how hard I worked?! You heartless bastard, you want to skin me alive and tear me apart? How could you do this to me?!"
"Oh, I see. This is a bit of a blunder." Li Wei chuckled and patted Ding Anping's shoulder, speaking like a retired cadre, "Don't get excited, young man. You're still a kid in front of those old fogies. What's there to be ashamed of? They should envy your youth, that's great. Maybe they'll even have a better opinion of you behind your back, thinking you're very courageous—no, more like courageous and resourceful, capable of great things without being bothered by trifles..."
"Alright, alright, stop comforting me. As long as your aunt treats me well, it's all worth it. So what if I'm embarrassed? I've already lost face, and it's all what you wanted. You've already stripped me of my dignity. As long as you remember to put in a good word for me with your grandpa so that I can marry your aunt sooner, I'll remember your kindness."
Ding Anping was a few years older than his aunt, and had long reached the marriageable age. His aunt, that beautiful flower, was always in front of him, and he had probably been drooling over her for a long time. Now that the two of them were officially married, he finally revealed his true colors as a lecher.
That evening, Li Wei and Luo Da rode home in their aunt's car.
Now, her aunt's demeanor had melted from the dead of winter into a warm spring day, her eyes and brows radiating springtime charm. Her speech had also become much gentler, less decisive and more feminine, giving Li Wei goosebumps. She sat alone in the back seat, rubbing her arms.
Luo Da sat in the passenger seat next to his aunt. Otherwise, Li Wei would definitely have muttered a few words to him, sharing her thoughts and marveling at how this person's intelligence was really like a stock, rising and falling in waves.
The family of three was having a family reunion, but Li Wei didn't join in the fun and went straight home. Luo Da kept her upstairs in her room. Before leaving, she reminded him, "Don't forget to pick me up tomorrow morning to go to my grandma's house." Her dad was busy, and seemingly no match for Luo Da's strength, as he carried her upstairs. He was panting heavily, unlike Luo Da, who walked briskly and effortlessly as if nothing had happened.
Wednesday was the sports meet, and Li Wei missed out on the coveted job of holding the class banner. Staying at home was also upsetting, so she tried it out and felt her foot was okay. In the morning, she rode Luo Dadi's bicycle to school.
To demonstrate her value, Li Wei carried a large bag filled with food for everyone's lunch.
The spring breeze blows and the war drums beat; on the sports field, who's afraid of whom?
The school playground was bustling with activity. Each class had planted numerous red flags, and the costumes for various performances were neat and bright, with the sounds of whistles and drums echoing from time to time. The playground had just been painted with bright white lime, giving it a vibrant look. Students darted back and forth, and the entire school was filled with youthful energy.
Li Wei sat in the first row of the classroom. Like everyone else, she was concerned about her own class's competitions and those of her relatives and friends. Of course, she also noticed that Su Xiuli was holding up the class banner for her. Li Wei was a little surprised, thinking that Yang Liqiu was quite pretty, and that she didn't seem to have any other events besides some general performances.
Li Wei didn't pay much attention, only noticing people connected to her. Especially those relatives and friends who seemed to be able to gather together. First were Li Lin and Zhou Xiaoyan in the women's 100m and 200m races. They hadn't met in the preliminaries, but both advanced with overwhelming advantages. Meeting in the finals was inevitable.
Secondly, there are Li Lianhui, Erpangzi, and Luo Er. Li Lianhui and Luo Er both made it to the 1200-meter final, while Erpangzi made it to the shot put final. In the final, they will both face Luo Da.
According to Li Wei's observation, among the same grade, there really isn't anyone who can compete with Luo Da in all the events. So, sigh, you unlucky kids, who told you to be in the same grade as Luo Da?
Because the sports meet is held for only one day and the schedule is very tight, with competitions taking place at various venues at the same time, and group performances taking place from time to time in the large open space in the middle of the playground, by the time the morning is over, almost all the final events will be held in the afternoon.
There was no suspense about Luo Da's participation in the event. Li Wei felt that Luo Da shouldn't have participated in the competition at all, because it would make it impossible for others to compete!
Luo Er and Li Lianhui both performed well, but the results for Erpangzi are unknown, and Wu Feng did not get a top-three finish in the long jump.
What impressed Li Wei was Li Lin. This girl actually defeated Zhou Xiaoyan in the 100-meter dash, and then narrowly lost to Zhou Xiaoyan in the 200-meter dash, taking second place. This was understandable, considering that Li Lin was two or three years younger than Zhou Xiaoyan, so it was normal for her to lack stamina.
Looking at Li Lin from afar, whose height and long legs were no less than Zhou Xiaoyan's, Li Wei suddenly realized that Li Lin hadn't started puberty yet. This meant that, who knows, she might grow even taller than her previous life's 1.7 meters, or even taller...
Given how vain this girl is now, shouldn't she try to become a model in the future?
Li Lianhui is also on this trend. He is now second only to Luo Da, taller than Luo Er and Erpangzi. He was already nearly 1.8 meters tall. If he gets any taller, wouldn't that be a bit too tall?
Li Wei glanced at herself subconsciously, but couldn't tell anything. Who knew how old she was? But with all this hard work and nutrition, she should be able to break the 160 mark someday, right?
She's done what she could; let's just leave the rest to fate.
