Although it feels a bit overwhelming to receive so many orders at once, and it would be better to produce more steadily by doing so at a steady pace, I still have some expectations for more orders in my heart. This may be the greed of human nature.
In the evening, I had a lively drink with the leaders of the region and county. The leaders were also very happy. Not only was the business opened, but also the export earnings in Shandong Province were the largest in the Canton Fair in recent years. With the subsequent regions and cities adding icing on the cake, Shandong Province should be the biggest winner in this Canton Fair!
According to records, the country's annual exports in 1985 were US$27.3 billion, imports were US$42.3 billion, and the country's foreign exchange reserves were only more than 3 billion.
The final transaction volume of this trade fair was US$3.1 billion.
State-owned backbone enterprises are the backbone of the Canton Fair's exports, so the daily turnover of small township enterprises like Qianhe Food Factory is indeed exaggerated.
In the following days, agents from several other countries signed supply contracts. Since their countries were too small and their markets were not large, the orders were not large either. The total number of orders from several countries was only more than 200 tons.
The next day at noon, several Hong Kong merchants came to meet the boss in person. Sun Zongyuan received them at the booth. The leader was called Li Jiawei, who had a trading company in Hong Kong. He came this time because he was attracted by the hot sales of canned food produced by Qianhe Food Factory. He also felt that Qianhe Food Factory's marketing was so novel and unique, so the boss must be a very smart person, so he wanted to get to know Sun Zongyuan.
Sun Zongyuan had previously thought about how to set up a trading company in Hong Kong to handle international trade issues. Now that Li Jiawei took the initiative to contact him, the two hit it off and signed an international trade agency contract.
Before 1990, there were many policy barriers to the development of the private economy in mainland China. In the early days of establishing a cannery, Sun Zongyuan not only did not bring in leaders to invest as a talisman, but also sought support from the county to register it under the name of the township government. Otherwise, he would touch upon uncertain policies and face imprisonment.
In December 1984, the Yongkang County Committee of the Communist Party of China in Yongkang County, Qianjiang Province, issued the "Several Provisions on the Reform of the Township Enterprise System", which gave the "green light" to the development of private industry. Yongkang's urban and rural areas soon formed a four-wheel drive pattern of "community-run", "team-run", "jointly run by households", and "private and individual-run".
By the end of 1985, the county had 295 township-run enterprises, 525 village-run enterprises, 913 joint-household enterprises, and 1,962 individual enterprises. Township industrial output value exceeded 100 million yuan for the first time, reaching 189 million yuan, accounting for 51.8% of the county's total industrial and agricultural output value. Profits reached 21.09 million yuan, and taxes paid reached 12.4 million yuan.
However, there are also some places that actively encourage the development of private enterprises. In some areas, private enterprises are developing rapidly, but the whole society is still in the debate over whether it should be "public" or "private". Some conservative places still have great restrictions on the economic development of private enterprises, and some reform pioneers have also been dealt with.
During this period, Nian Guangjiu of Huangshan Province was the founder of the "Shazi Guazi" brand and was known as "China's No. 1 Merchant." Although he considered himself a fool, Nian Guangjiu was not foolish at all. On the contrary, his adventurous spirit of breaking the rules made him one of the first self-employed entrepreneurs in China to amass a fortune exceeding millions.
He had already earned millions of yuan by selling melon seeds in 1976, but was later convicted and imprisoned three times (for "speculation and profiteering", "monsters and demons", and "hooliganism").
After Sun Zongyuan was reborn, he didn't want to be the bird hit by the policy, so he buried his head deep in his wings, not wanting others to see it. He just wanted to develop himself quietly.
Now that Li Jiawei has signed a contract with him, he will have a way to circumvent policy constraints and can develop and strengthen himself faster and better.
Before the contract was signed, Sun Zongyuan approached County Magistrate Wang Peizhong and Commissioner Liu Dehai to report on the order situation in Hong Kong:
Hong Kong promised to import 2,000 tons of canned food annually for five consecutive years. They also demanded that Qianhe Food Factory not export any canned food to Europe and North America (effectively becoming the exclusive export agent for these two countries), charging $1,600 per ton.
Commissioner Liu and County Magistrate Wang consulted Sun Zongyuan:
"Canned goods are $1,600 per ton. Do you still have money to earn?"
"It's okay, I just make less money, but it's not without profit. The Canton Fair is held twice a year, and the time span is too long, which is not conducive to our production. After signing a contract with Hong Kong, we can arrange production according to the growing season of fruits and asparagus. As for areas other than these two, we have to increase publicity and promotion efforts to win more orders." Sun Zongyuan replied.
"As long as you feel it's okay, do you have any other comments?" asked Commissioner Liu.
"Should we ask them to import more, add 1,000 tons, and export 4,000 tons to us throughout the year?"
"I think it's okay. Let's put some pressure on them and ask them to export 4,000 tons annually, otherwise we will find someone else to do it!" County Magistrate Wang said firmly.
"Okay, I'll continue talking to them."
In the end, Li Jiawei could not bear the pressure from Sun Zongyuan and reluctantly agreed to trade 4,000 tons of canned food a year.
Everyone was very happy. The new orders brought a lot of achievements to Shandong Province!
In the evening, the district and county leaders invited Li Jiawei and his team from a Hong Kong trading company to thank them for their support and kindness to Qianhe Food Factory, and also invited them to look for investment opportunities in Ganhe area if they had the chance.
At the dinner, the leaders gave their best and both the guests and hosts had a great time.
Li Jiawei was also drunk. After Sun Zongyuan sent the leaders back to the hotel, he personally led people to send Li Jiawei back to the Baiyun Hotel where they were staying.
In Li Jiawei's room, Li Jiawei changed from being drunk to returning to normal.
