Chapter 12 Selling Canned Goods

Upon closer inspection, Jiang Sheng was truly taken aback.

In Jiang Sheng's memory, a can of yellow peaches cost two cents, and a can of strawberries cost five or six cents.

The cheapest canned fruit costs at least two cents, so you can imagine the profit margin.

As for canned chicken and pork, they can sell for more than a dollar.

But when Jiang Sheng saw the prices of the canned fruit and the canned meat in front of him, he couldn't help but widen his eyes in surprise.

Canned apples cost one yuan, canned bayberries cost two yuan, and strawberries cost two yuan and fifty cents.

Canned meat was even sold for a high price of three yuan!

Jiang Sheng couldn't help but widen his eyes; this was quite different from the price he remembered!

"Young man, what would you like to buy?"

The supply and marketing cooperative's clerk saw Jiang Sheng standing in front of the canned fruit and walked over to him with enthusiasm.

"Big sister," Jiang Sheng pointed to the canned apples and asked in confusion, "I remember these canned apples used to cost 50 cents, why are they so expensive?"

“Our canned fruit has always been this price,” the woman said, sounding a little annoyed and impatient. “The 50 cents you mentioned is from ten years ago. Who sells it that cheap now?”

Jiang Sheng then scratched his head sheepishly, "I'm sorry, big sister, please don't be angry, I just misremembered."

Upon hearing his older sister's words, Jiang Sheng did indeed recall that he hadn't eaten much canned food in his previous life.

The canned food that cost just a few cents in my memory was indeed something I tasted in the 1970s when I was only a teenager.

Thinking about it this way, Jiang Sheng was even happier.

These canned goods in front of me, whether fruit or meat, each weigh about a pound.

This is much more expensive than buying fruit or meat separately.

Even if a family shares the meat, they're only really tasting it, so it's naturally not as cheap as buying meat and cooking it themselves.

Even so, these canned goods are still bestsellers, after all, they taste so delicious that once you've tasted them, you can't forget them.

However, it was precisely because of this that a business opportunity arose in Jiang Sheng's mind.

He smiled sheepishly at the older woman and said, "It's been years since I last ate canned food, so I misremembered the price."

The older sister's expression changed, and she carefully wiped the can of fruit in front of her, speaking as she did so.

"It's not your fault. After all, not everyone can afford canned food. If you want to eat it, save up and buy some so your whole family can enjoy it too!"

Jiang Sheng smiled and pulled out a stack of paper tickets from his waist.

"Big sister, give me a can of apples, a can of yellow peaches, and a can of bayberries, plus a can of chicken and a can of pork!"

Upon hearing this, the eldest sister looked at the large stack of paper tickets in Jiang Sheng's hand and couldn't help but widen her eyes in surprise.

Goodness gracious, how come this kid is so rich!

Looking at the young man in front of me, dressed in ordinary cloth, he was clearly not a wealthy person.

But he was so generous with his money; this stack of bills must have been worth at least eight or nine dollars!

The waitress immediately beamed and quickly took the can of food from in front of her with a smile.

"I didn't expect you to be so talented! Just wait, I'll get it for you right now!"

"I've just made a little money and wanted to buy some canned goods for my family to try. Thank you for your help, ma'am!"

Jiang Sheng smiled and said "Ah," her words dripping with sweetness.

As the older sister placed the canned goods on the table one by one, she also bought a pound of sugar, as well as a large bag of disposable paper cups and spoons.

The eldest sister's smile became even warmer, and her abacus clicked loudly as she worked.

"That's twelve yuan and seventy-eight fen in total, young man, please keep it safe!"

As she spoke, the older sister very warmly stuffed two more pieces of candy into Jiang Sheng's hands: "You bought so much, consider these a gift from me. Please come and support my business here more often in the future!"

As everyone knows, the business of the supply and marketing cooperatives belongs to the state.

The woman in front of me, as a sales clerk, only receives a fixed salary and additional subsidies each month.

The older sister was so kind as to weigh his own goods and then give him two extra candies; that was already considered very thoughtful service.

After thanking the older sister, Jiang Sheng placed the full cans of food and disposable paper cups on the bicycle, which was already piled high with socks.

He quickly arrived at the location where he had set up his stall yesterday, riding his bicycle.

The people setting up stalls around the area were all curious when they saw that Su Chen had arrived a little later than yesterday, and that in addition to socks, he was also carrying all sorts of canned goods.

In addition, there were quite a few new customers who had bought socks yesterday and came specifically to buy socks after being given a brief introduction.

"Young man, these socks are three pairs for eight cents, right?"

"My neighbor Aunt Liu bought a lot yesterday, so I came here specifically to buy some more today. Why are you setting up your stall so late today?"

As the crowd gathered around to ask questions, Jiang Cheng straightened the socks and smiled as he spoke.

"I got up a little late today, sorry to have kept everyone waiting!"

As soon as he finished arranging the socks, Jiang Sheng sold dozens of pairs.

During the break, the other vendors around couldn't help but point curiously at the canned goods next to the socks.

"Young man, why did you bring so many canned foods today?"

"Yes, this canned food is so expensive. Even if we make money selling socks, we can't spend it like this!"

Everyone was puzzled, after all, they bought so many cans of food at once, and the total profit was almost equal to the profit they made from selling socks today.

This kid seems pretty shrewd, how could he do something like this?

Jiang Sheng explained with a smile as he arranged the canned goods.

"Besides selling socks today, I also plan to sell some canned goods."

The moment those words were spoken, the surrounding vendors widened their eyes in surprise, their faces filled with disbelief.

"Young man, did I hear that right?!"

The middle-aged woman next to him, who was also selling socks, rubbed her ears, looking as if she had misheard.

She pointed to the cans, refusing to believe what Jiang Sheng had said.

"These canned goods cost at least one yuan at the supply and marketing cooperative. Do you have some special channels?"

Upon hearing this, Jiang Sheng simply smiled, arranged the canned goods in front of him, and then opened one of the cans of apples.

Then, using a spoon, he scooped the contents into several disposable cups, adding some sugar syrup from the can.

"Nobody can afford a whole can, so I'm selling it for five cents a serving. There are two coins in a serving. Anyone want some?"
