Chapter 46 The Never-Ending Firewood

Fang Jie smiled and said, "Yes, go and start a fire to boil a pot of water."

"good."

Song Yaohui immediately agreed, put down the rabbit, and ran towards the kitchen.

The thought of eating meat that night made him walk with a spring in his step.

Fang Jie put down the firewood to process the rabbit.

Once the water in the pot boiled, Fang Jie threw the cleaned rabbit into a large basin and poured ladle after ladle of boiling water over it.

After soaking for a while, they started to clean the rabbit fur. After cleaning the fur, they gutted the rabbit and chopped the meat into pieces.

Over the years, with Song Darong away from home, she single-handedly acted as both father and mother, working on construction sites, killing chickens and ducks, and learning everything else.

However, her family was poor, so she didn't have many opportunities to showcase her talents.

Next, heat oil in a wok, add scallions and ginger, then stir-fry the rabbit meat until golden brown, and add soy sauce.

The kids love spicy food, so I added six dried chilies to enhance the flavor and remove any fishy smell. Then I added two large ladles of boiling water to cover the rabbit meat, covered the pot, and simmered it over low heat.

Fang Jie and Song Yaohui were busy in the kitchen.

Song Fanxing and Song Yaohua were also busy.

Song Fanxing handed over the firewood, and Song Yaohua took the firewood and piled it on the woodpile.

But what's going on? He always felt that the firewood would never be finished piling up.

As he reached up to pile the food on top, he asked his younger sister behind him, "Little sister, how much is left?"

"It's almost over."

My sister has said this several times already.

Seeing that Song Yaohua could no longer reach it, Song Fanxing brought over her usual small stool.

"Second brother, if you stand on top, you can pile another one on top."

Song Yaohua stood on the bench again and continued stacking the boards.

Finally, Song Fanxing said, "That's all."

Song Yaohua got off the bench.

Fang Jie came out of the kitchen carrying a spatula and saw the firewood piled high against the wall. The spatula fell to the ground with a clatter.

Song Fanxing and Song Yaohua turned around, and she pretended to be nonchalant as she picked up the spatula and went back to the kitchen.

Looking at the pile of firewood that was much taller than him, Song Yaohua was about to ask Song Fanxing if her mother had collected this much firewood.

Song Fanxing sniffed and said with delight, "It smells so good!"

Song Yaohua stopped thinking about why the firewood had become so much and went to squat down at the entrance of the kitchen.

"Mommy, when will the meat be ready? My mouth is watering."

Fang Jie smiled, "Almost done. Go wipe the table clean, set it on the kang (heated brick bed), and arrange the bowls and chopsticks."

"Okay!"

Song Yaohua jumped up with a shout and ran to set up the dining table.

Fang Jie put down the spatula and came out, pulling her daughter aside and examining her little chubby hands from all angles.

"Are you tired from chopping so much firewood? Are you injured?"

Song Fanxing shook her head. "No, no, Mom, I'm very capable. If I weren't afraid that the villagers would see me and kidnap me like a monster, I could help you with a lot of chores."

"You absolutely mustn't do that! Mom isn't tired."

Song Fanxing opened her big, innocent eyes and said, "But I want to help my mom with the burden."

Fang Jie was so moved that she choked up.

She must have accumulated so much good fortune in her past life to have such a wonderful daughter in this one.

She said solemnly, "Xingxing, all Mom wants is for our family to live a peaceful and simple life, to be together in harmony and happiness. Mom doesn't want anything to happen to you."

Because her daughter is so special, she is always worried that someone will harm her.

"Mom, don't worry, I'll be careful. I'll be fine, and I'll make sure our family has a good life."

Fang Jie was both happy and worried about her daughter's remarkable development.

Song Yaohui called out from the kitchen, "Mom, the meat is ready!"

Fang Jie lovingly patted her daughter's head, then turned and went into the house to serve the meat.

Song Fanxing excitedly ran to fetch water to wash her hands.

A large bowl of fragrant rabbit meat was served, and the three siblings gathered around it.

Mingming kept swallowing her saliva, but no one touched their chopsticks. When Fang Jie sat down at the table, she said, "Eat."

Only then did they pick up their chopsticks and start eating.

Fang Jie placed a rabbit leg on each of the three children's plates.

Song Fanxing: "Thank you, Mom!"

Song Yaohua followed suit, saying, "Thank you, Mom!"

Song Yaohui said shyly, "Thank you, Mom!"

Fang Jie felt relieved after hearing this.

The three children are well-behaved, sensible, polite, and filial.

Song Fanxing offered the remaining rabbit leg to Fang Jie, but Fang Jie refused.

"Leave it for the stars to eat."

Song Fanxing shook her head, "Mom, one rabbit leg is enough for me, you can have some too."

Fang Jie knew her daughter was on her side, so she didn't refuse.

Song Fanxing took a bite of the rabbit meat, and it was so delicious that she wanted to scream.

Wild rabbits taste better than farmed rabbits; their meat is fragrant but not greasy, and tender but not dry.

Fang Jie added some potato chunks, which tasted delicious after absorbing the rich meat broth.

The main dish was steamed pumpkin buns made in the morning. Except for Song Fanxing, everyone else ate two buns with meat and vegetables. Song Fanxing was small and had a small appetite, so she ate a rabbit leg, a few pieces of meat and potatoes and was full.

He lay on the kang (a heated brick bed) with a satisfied expression.

The rabbit was very big; the four of them couldn't finish it, and half of it was still left.

Fang Jie took a clean empty bowl, picked up a few pieces of tender, boneless rabbit meat, added a few pieces of potato, and placed a pumpkin steamed bun on top.

She instructed Song Yaohui to wash the dishes while she delivered food to her mother-in-law and helped her clean up the mess.

Song Fanxing got up and said, "Mom, I'll go with you."

Fang Jie readily agreed.

The mother and daughter lit torches and headed towards the Song family's house.

Grandma Song was overjoyed to find there was meat to eat, and she kept urging Fang Jie to feed her quickly.

After finishing her meal, Song Fanxing brought over a bowl. "Mom, let's give the baby some water."

The bowl contains water from the sacred spring.

Fang Jie took the bowl and fed her mother-in-law half a bowl of water.

Grandma Song thinks the water tastes especially good today. Why is that?

Then, Fang Jie asked her daughter to wait at the door while she changed her mother-in-law's diaper.

Song Fanxing looked at her mother again.

Soon, once her grandma can stand up, Mom won't have to do this anymore.

Fang Jie hung up the washed diapers to dry, washed her hands carefully three times, and then went home with her daughter.

After arriving home, while her family was washing up, Song Fanxing took out two baskets of rice, soybeans, and wheat from the storage space.

Song Yaohua carried the foot-washing water out to pour it out, and was so shocked by the scene before him that he shouted "Mom!"

Fang Jie thought something had happened and rushed out, "What happened? What happened? You fell..."

Song Yaohui followed closely behind.

Both of them were shocked.

At this moment, Song Yaohua threw down the foot basin, plunged both hands into a basket of rice, and burst into laughter.

"Mom, the fairy uncle has brought us food."

Fang Jie was so excited she almost couldn't stand up. She knew it wasn't some kind of magical uncle; it was planted by her beloved daughter herself.

She turned to look at her daughter, Song Fanxing, who winked at her playfully.

Fang Jie was amused by her appearance, and after a while she directed her two sons to help her carry the grain to the cellar and put it away.

We can't let outsiders see this.

Song Yaohui immediately took action, his body brimming with energy.

Fang Jie, Song Yaohui, and Song Yaohua carried baskets to the cellar, and Song Fanxing joined in, saying, "I'll help too."

"Go play somewhere else."

Fang Jie and Song Yaohui spoke up at the same time to stop them.

Song Fanxing had no choice but to give up.
