"That's right! If you're so capable, then don't live in the village! Get out!"
The villagers were enraged by Xu Kuo's words and started jumping up and down, cursing him.
Xu Kuo was too lazy to waste words with them, so he turned to Captain Wang and asked, "Captain Wang, when will this house be repaired?"
Captain Wang wiped his sweat and replied, "At this rate, it will take at least a week."
"A week?" Xu Kuo frowned. He knew that the infectious disease outbreak in the village would only be happening in the next day or two, and a week was too long. If something went wrong during that time, it would be troublesome.
"Can you go any faster?" Xu Kuo urged.
"This..." Captain Wang looked troubled. "Brother, this is already the fastest speed. Any faster and the quality can't be guaranteed."
Xu Kuo took out a wad of cash from his pocket and stuffed it into Captain Wang's hand: "This is a deposit. I want to see the house built within three days!"
Captain Wang stared wide-eyed at the thick wad of cash in his hand. He swallowed hard, gritted his teeth, and said, "Fine! Brother, for that, I'm all in! Three days it is!"
With the financial backing, the project progressed much faster.
For the past two days, Xu Kuo's family has been staying at Niu Erbao's house. Jiang Xiuying and her mother, Ren Hongmei, have also taken medicine to prevent infectious diseases, which has put Xu Kuo at ease.
Three days later, the brand-new brick house was finally completed.
Xu Kuo's family moved into their new home with great joy, finally having a decent place to stay.
On the other hand, the scene in front of the village chief's house was quite different.
"Village chief, you have to do us justice! My child is delirious from the fever!"
"Village chief, my old man has also fallen ill, what should we do!"
"Village chief, this illness came on strangely. Could someone be playing a trick on us?"
A group of villagers surrounded the village chief's house, chattering amongst themselves, their faces sallow and their expressions haggard.
In the past few days, an infectious disease suddenly broke out in the village, and many people fell ill, causing widespread panic.
The village chief stood at the door, looking at the anxious villagers before him, feeling extremely irritated. With the village chief election just around the corner, if he didn't handle this situation well, he might lose his position!
The village doctor stood by, equally helpless. The illness had come on so suddenly that he had no idea what had caused it, let alone how to treat it.
"Village chief, say something! What should we do?"
"Yes, village chief, you can't just abandon us!"
The villagers became even more anxious when they saw that the village chief remained silent.
The village chief, his head throbbing from the noise, slammed his fist on the table and roared, "Shut up, all of you!"
The villagers were startled and immediately fell silent.
The village chief took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. His eyes darted around, and an idea came to him.
"Fellow villagers, don't panic. I will definitely give you an explanation!" The village chief cleared his throat and adopted a serious tone. "However, before we resolve the issue, I have a condition."
What are the conditions?
"If you all vote for me when the village chief election is held, I guarantee that I will definitely solve this infectious disease!" the village chief said with a serious expression.
The villagers looked at each other, somewhat unwilling, but they had no other choice but to agree.
"Okay, village chief, we'll do as you say!"
"We'll support you as long as you can cure your illness!"
Seeing that the villagers had all agreed, the village chief was secretly pleased. He cleared his throat and continued, "This infectious disease came so suddenly, it's never happened before. Do you think someone might be deliberately causing this?"
"Who's so wicked?"
"Exactly, isn't this going to kill us?"
The villagers were talking about it.
The village chief sneered, "Is that even a question? Ever since our village had a conflict with that brat Xu Kuo, this infectious disease has appeared. Isn't that too much of a coincidence? In my opinion, it's probably his doing!"
"Besides, that kid's whole family is fine, which is too unusual."
"It's him! Xu Kuo! He's the one who brought all this bad luck!"
"Yes! Ever since he came, the village has never had a moment of peace!"
"You jinx! Get out of our village!"
The villagers were excited and flocked to Xu Kuo's newly built brick house.
Xu Kuo was inside discussing with Jiang Xiuying and Ren Hongmei about buying some new household items when he suddenly heard a noisy commotion outside. He frowned. He got up, went to the door, and flung it open. Before him was a sea of people, all from the village.
The leader was the village chief, whose face was full of anger. He pointed his finger at Xu Kuo's nose and cursed, "Xu Kuo! You son of a bitch! How dare you live here? Look at the mess you've made!"
"That's right! You jinx! You've ruined our whole village!"
"Get out! You're not welcome in our village!"
The villagers joined in the shouting, using foul language that was utterly offensive.
Xu Kuo was furious; these people were simply unreasonable! He roared, "Shut up, all of you! What's wrong with you all?"
"Xu Kuo! You damned jinx! How dare you ask? You brought infectious diseases to the village, causing suffering to every household. How dare you say that?" A skinny man jumped up and down, pointing at Xu Kuo's nose and shouting.
Upon hearing this, Xu Kuo's heart skipped a beat. So that's what it was about! But then he thought, what does this infectious disease have to do with me?
He gave the man a cold look and said, "Bullshit! What does an infectious disease have to do with me? Do you have any evidence? If you don't have any evidence, stop spouting nonsense!"
The village chief was even more furious when he saw that Xu Kuo still dared to argue. "Hmph, evidence? How come no one in your family is sick? Huh? Tell me!"
Xu Kuo immediately felt disgusted.
That's because he gave his family members preventative medication beforehand, but how could he tell these people about it? They wouldn't believe him anyway, and would only make things more complicated.
He steeled himself and retorted, "So what if my family isn't sick? Is that a problem? If you're sick, it's your bad luck, it's none of my business!"
"You...you...you are utterly depraved!" The village chief trembled with rage at Xu Kuo's outburst.
He pointed at Xu Kuo and roared at the top of his lungs, "Fellow villagers, did you all hear that? This bastard doesn't care about our lives at all! He's trying to deny it! Today, we absolutely cannot let him get away with this! We will make him compensate us for our losses!"
"Yes! Pay up!"
"Get him out of our village!"
"Kill him!"
The villagers' emotions were completely ignited, and they waved their fists and shouted that they were going to rush forward.
Looking at the group of irrational villagers before him, Xu Kuo felt a pang of sorrow. He had originally planned to prepare medicines to treat the villagers' infectious diseases once the houses were built.
