Chapter Ninety-Two: The Origin of Infectious Diseases

But now it seems that it was all wishful thinking on his part! These people are not worth saving at all! He snorted coldly, his eyes filled with disappointment and contempt, and slammed the door shut, shutting out all the noise.

"Village chief, what... what should we do?"

"Yeah, village chief, if that kid won't open the door, we can't just smash up his house, can we?"

Seeing that Xu Kuo was staying indoors, the villagers were at a loss and could only look on the village chief with longing.

The village chief was now in a difficult position. He had originally planned to take this opportunity to completely drive Xu Kuo out of the village and consolidate his own position.

Unexpectedly, Xu Kuo was so tough and didn't buy into his act at all.

His eyes darted around, and he said viciously, "Hmph, jinx! You won't open the door, huh? I don't believe I can't cure you! Someone, go to the township and get a doctor. I don't believe I can't find the root of this disease!"

Xu Kuo, who was inside the house, heard everything clearly and sneered inwardly: Find a doctor? Very well, I'd like to see what kind of doctor you can find!

Then he turned to Jiang Xiuying and Ren Hongmei and said, "Don't be afraid. With me here, no one can bully us!"

The village chief, accompanied by the village doctor, rushed to the township. There, he found a doctor he knew, named Zhao Dezhu, at the township health center.

"Dr. Zhao, you have to help me this time!" The village chief entered the door with a long face, crying and complaining.

Seeing the village chief's expression, Zhao Dezhu knew what was going on. He feigned surprise: "Oh dear, village chief, what's wrong? What serious incident has occurred?"

The village chief embellished the story of the infectious disease outbreak in the village, and at the end, he didn't forget to shift all the blame onto Xu Kuo.

"Dr. Zhao, you have to stand up for me! That Xu Kuo is a jinx; our village has never had a moment's peace since he came! This infectious disease must be his doing!" the village chief said confidently.

Zhao Dezhu chuckled inwardly. This village chief was a real old fox, trying to use someone else to do his dirty work.

However, he was no pushover either. Since the village chief needed his help, he naturally had to make good use of him. He pondered for a moment: "Village chief, this is not a good matter. Without evidence, I dare not speak recklessly."

Upon hearing this, the village chief became anxious, pulled a wad of cash from his pocket, and stuffed it into Zhao Dezhu's hand: "Dr. Zhao, this is a small token of my appreciation. Please take it. If you help me get this done, I promise you'll be richly rewarded later!"

Zhao Dezhu weighed the money in his hand, a satisfied smile spreading across his face. He patted the village chief on the shoulder: "Village chief, don't worry, I've got this sorted out!"

The two conspired together and made their way to the village.

Zhao Dezhu pretended to walk around the village, asking about the patients' conditions from house to house, nodding seriously from time to time as if he were thinking about something.

Finally, he arrived at Xu Kuo's doorstep.

"This is it!" the village chief said through gritted teeth, pointing to Xu Kuo's gate.

Zhao Dezhu walked to the door, cleared his throat, and shouted loudly, "I am a doctor from the township health center. I'm here to investigate the situation of infectious diseases. Please open the door and cooperate!"

Xu Kuo heard everything clearly from inside the room, and he gave a cold laugh.

The show is finally about to begin!

Seeing that no one answered the door, Zhao Dezhu knocked again: "Open the door! If you don't open the door, we'll have to take coercive measures!"

There was still no movement inside the house.

Zhao Dezhu glanced back at the village chief, who gave him a look, signaling him to continue.

Zhao Dezhu took a deep breath and kicked open Xu Kuo's door.

But they were jolted back.

Xu Kuo was dissatisfied and opened the door.

"Oh dear!" Jiang Xiuying cried out in fright and quickly hid behind Xu Kuo.

Zhao Dezhu stood outside the house, looked around, and finally his gaze fell on Xu Kuo.

"Are you Xu Kuo?" Zhao Dezhu asked knowingly.

Xu Kuo replied expressionlessly, "It's me."

Seeing that everyone outside was paying attention to them, Zhao Dezhu sneered.

The next moment, Zhao Dezhu's expression suddenly changed. He pointed at Xu Kuo and shouted, "It's you! I found you! It's the things in your house that caused the infectious disease!"

"What?"

"Really?"

"I knew it! It must have been this kid who did it!"

Upon hearing this, the villagers erupted in uproar, filled with righteous indignation and wishing they could tear Xu Kuo apart alive.

Jiang Xiuying turned pale with fright, gripping Xu Kuo's arm tightly, her whole body trembling.

Xu Kuo gently patted her hand, reassuring her. He turned his head and looked coldly at Zhao Dezhu: "You can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want! What evidence do you have to prove that the infectious disease was caused by something in my house?"

Zhao Dezhu sneered: "Evidence? I am the evidence! I am a doctor, and my words are evidence!"

"You..." Xu Kuo was so angry that he was furious. This doctor was simply turning black into white and was utterly shameless!

Seeing this, the village chief said smugly, "Xu Kuo, what do you have to say? Do you still want to deny it? Let me tell you, you can't escape today even if you have wings! Men, arrest him!"

"Let's see who dares!" Xu Kuo roared, his imposing aura overwhelming.

"Xu Kuo, don't be so arrogant! Do you think you can still control everything? Let me tell you, today I'm going to have the security team arrest you and make you spend the rest of your life in jail!" the village chief said sternly.

Xu Kuo glanced contemptuously at the village chief, then turned his gaze to Zhao Dezhu. "Dr. Zhao, I'll ask you one last time: do you dare to take responsibility for what you just said?"

Zhao Dezhu felt a little guilty under Xu Kuo's sharp gaze, but then he thought to himself, with the village chief backing him up, what was there to be afraid of?

"Take...take responsibility! Of course I'll take responsibility! It's an infectious disease caused by things in your house, so what?"

"You utterly depraved Xu Kuo! You wretched bastard, give me back my man's life!"

"Pay up! You have to pay up! You heartless bastard, you've ruined our village like this, can you afford to compensate us?"

"Kill him! Kill this menace!"

The crowd was enraged, and curses, louder and louder, surged toward Xu Kuo like a tidal wave.

Xu Kuo was seething with anger. These people had been begging him to buy cheap vegetables one minute, and now they were turning their backs on him the next. They were ungrateful wretches! He slammed his fist on the table: "Bullshit! You want evidence? Show it to me! Anyone can make a story out of thin air!"

The villagers were taken aback, exchanging bewildered glances. Evidence? Where did they get any evidence? But so many people in the village were sick; who else could it be but Xu Kuo?

"It's you! Who else could it be but you?"

"Your family eats and uses the best things, it must be you who's behind this!"

"Yes, it's him! We're all sick, but his family is fine, it must be him!"

The villagers all spoke at once. They couldn't find any evidence, but they were convinced it was Xu Kuo.

Seeing this, the village chief was secretly pleased. This was exactly the effect he wanted; as long as the blame was shifted onto Xu Kuo, no one would hold him accountable.
