Chapter Seventy-Three: The Veteran's Accusation

Under the warm sun, Xu Kuo and Niu Erbao stood side by side beside the farmland.

Looking at the lush vegetable garden before him, a satisfied smile unconsciously appeared on Xu Kuo's face. The sunlight shone on his face, outlining a confident profile.

"Erbao, let's press our advantage and keep planting vegetables!"

The vegetables they had planted were just enough to supply the market for a month.

The land is now ready for replanting after the harvest.

This cycle can be repeated to ensure a continuous supply of vegetables.

Once these new seedlings have grown strong and healthy, they can be transported to the market and sold for a good price.

Meanwhile, an elderly man, his body hunched over, returned home.

He walked shakily to the bedside, squatted down, and dragged an old wooden box out from under the bed.

Opening the box, beneath layers of old clothes, I found a box tightly wrapped in red cloth.

The old man held the box in both hands as if it were a rare treasure, and slowly opened it. Inside, a military merit brooch lay quietly, gleaming with a cold light in the dim light.

The old man carefully pinned the brooch to his chest, straightened his back, which had long been bent by the weight of time, and walked out of his house with firm steps toward the county committee.

At the entrance of the county committee, the elderly man was about to step into the gate when he was stopped by a security guard.

"Sir, this isn't a place you can just walk into. Please leave immediately."

The security guard frowned and waved his hand impatiently.

Upon hearing this, the old man immediately straightened his back. "I am a veteran with thirty years of military service! My son sacrificed his life on the battlefield to protect our country! Now that I have been wronged, is there not even a place for me to seek justice?"

The security guard stood there, staring at the old man from head to toe.

Although the old man's clothes were worn and patched, he stood tall and his eyes exuded an imposing aura.

Then look at that brooch; under the sunlight, it reflects a dazzling light—it's a military badge!

The security guard's face turned deathly pale instantly, realizing that he might have stopped someone important.

"Sir, please don't be angry. Please rest in the security room for a while. I... I'll go and report it right away!"

The security guard's attitude made a complete 180-degree turn. He helped the old man into the security room, then ran all the way into the county committee building and headed straight for Secretary Wen's office.

A moment later, a series of hurried footsteps approached from afar, and Secretary Wen and the security guard rushed to the old man.

Upon seeing the old man, Secretary Wen immediately stood at attention, his posture ramrod straight, and gave a respectful, standard military salute: "Senior, what brings you here in person?"

Looking at the energetic leader before him, the old man felt a sense of comfort.

Secretary Wen carefully helped the old man into the office.

"Senior, please have a seat."

Secretary Wen personally poured the old man a steaming cup of tea, saying, "Tell me what's wrong, and I will definitely seek justice for you!"

The old man held the teacup in both hands, feeling the warmth in his palms, and the pent-up grievances and anger in his heart poured out like a flood.

He took a deep breath and recounted the injustice he had suffered at the vegetable market that day, but he did not know Xu Kuo's name and only described him as a young man selling vegetables.

The more Secretary Wen listened, the more his brows furrowed and his expression grew increasingly grave.

She never expected that there would be such bullies and tyrannical people in the area under her jurisdiction!

The fact that the unknown young man was able to uphold kindness and integrity in the face of unfair treatment is truly commendable.

"Senior, rest assured, I will investigate this matter thoroughly and show absolutely no leniency!" Secretary Wen's tone was firm, and his eyes revealed an unwavering determination.

The old man shook his head, a resolute glint in his cloudy eyes: "I don't want any written reply, I want to see you punish that bully with my own eyes!"

Secretary Wen was slightly taken aback, not expecting the old man to make such a request.

But looking into the old man's determined eyes, she understood that this was not only his persistent pursuit of fairness and justice, but also his trust and expectations of her.

“Alright! Senior, I promise you!” Secretary Wen replied resolutely. “I’ll make preparations today, and tomorrow morning, we’ll go to the market and resolve this matter in front of everyone!”

Upon hearing this, the old man's hands trembled with emotion. He grasped Secretary Wen's hand tightly and repeatedly expressed his gratitude: "Good, good, good! Secretary Wen, you are truly a good official!"

After seeing the elderly off, Secretary Wen immediately began planning tomorrow's actions.

...

The next morning, Xu Kuo and Niu Erbao, as usual, pushed a cart full of fresh vegetables to the market.

Xu Kuo had already made up his mind. After observing Niu Erbao for some time, he found that although Niu Erbao had difficulty walking, he was honest and reliable, and was fully capable of handling things on his own. He planned to let Niu Erbao continue running the vegetable stall, so that he could have more time to do more important things.

"Erbao, you stay here and sell vegetables for a while. I have some errands to run," Xu Kuo patted Niu Erbao on the shoulder and instructed him.

Niu Erbao nodded, a simple and honest smile on his face: "Brother Xu, don't worry, I'll take care of things here!"

Just as Xu Kuo was about to turn and leave, a familiar voice called out to him from behind.

"Young man, wait a minute!" The old man squeezed through the crowd and came to Xu Kuo.

"Grandpa, what brings you here?" Xu Kuo asked, somewhat surprised.

The old man looked at him with a smile: "I'm here to back you up! I've spoken to Secretary Wen, and he'll be here to deal with that Shi Jixing soon!"
