Chapter Thirty-Four: Preparing to Raise Chickens

In her previous life in the US, guns were legal to buy and sell, so Du Yuhan purchased some. Moreover, she was a shooting enthusiast and had collected several different types of guns.

However, she has a limited number of bullets and won't waste them easily.

Du Yuhan regrets that there are no wild boars in this area, otherwise she could eat wild boar meat.

Although wild boar meat is tough and coarse, it's still better than having no pork at all. The meager monthly pork supply isn't even enough to fill a tooth gap.

With no wild boars available, we'll have to satisfy our cravings with rabbits and pheasants. Fortunately, animals like rabbits reproduce very quickly, so we don't have to worry about them being hunted to extinction.

Du Yuhan put the willow basket into her spatial storage and nimbly moved through the woods with her bow and arrow in hand.

Although she couldn't go into the mountains due to her arm injury, she didn't neglect her exercise and went for a run every day. In addition, the good food she ate during this time made her much stronger.

Now my arm is completely healed, and I feel like I have inexhaustible energy.

Soon, Du Yuhan encountered a wild rabbit. She drew her bow and shot an arrow with fluid grace, accurately hitting her target. The rabbit struggled a few times before dying.

Du Yuhan first put it into her spatial storage and continued on her way.

She planned to collect a few live pheasants during her trip into the mountains and keep them in her spatial dimension. Once the pheasants laid eggs in the dimension, she could take them out when she went into the mountains and say that she had found them there.

The ranch isn't open yet, so she doesn't have the permission to buy animals from the shop. Raising chickens will be much easier once the ranch is open.

She now raises wild pheasants in chicken coops outside her villa. She can only raise a few at a time.

The eggs laid by farm-raised chickens are different from those laid by wild chickens, and Du Yuhan didn't want to arouse suspicion.

She had already made up her mind. Today she would take a live pheasant back home, build a chicken coop in the yard, and raise it to see if it could lay eggs.

In a few days, she plans to buy chicks and raise about ten hens so that they can lay enough eggs for themselves.

Han Yixian needs to ensure he gets enough nutrition every day. Milk is even harder to obtain now; raising a few chickens would be much easier.

By the time the chickens at home start laying eggs, the space will probably be upgraded to the point where I can open a ranch.

Thinking about the impending famine, Du Yuhan felt a great sense of urgency. She had to find a way to stock up on food without arousing suspicion.

Du Yuhan walked forward while thinking about something. Along the way, she successfully collected several pheasants. Then she went into her space. Except for one pheasant, which she didn't touch, the wings and tails of the other pheasants were all cut off.

After the pheasant was bald, it was put into a pre-prepared chicken coop with food and water, and then Du Yuhan left the space.

The environment in the space is very good; I believe the pheasants will lay eggs soon.

After catching a pheasant and a rabbit, she turned back without venturing any further.

At this time, the mountains were gradually covered with a light green, and many trees had begun to bud, soon covering the mountains with a green coat.

Du Yuhan saw elm trees with elm seeds growing on them halfway through the journey and thought of elm seed rice.

Elm trees always grow elm seeds before their leaves. It looks like we'll have elm seeds to eat soon. I'll definitely have Liu Gang climb the tree and pick lots of elm seeds so we can make elm seed rice and have our fill.

Thinking of the sweet and delicious elm seed rice, Du Yuhan swallowed hard. How many years had it been since she had eaten elm seed rice? It seemed like she hadn't eaten it since leaving this place in her previous life; it was such a distant memory.

When they reached the mountainside, Du Yuhan took out a willow basket from her spatial storage, placed two wild rabbits and a pheasant at the bottom of the basket, and then filled the basket with wild vegetables before carrying it home.

Just before bringing it home, Du Yuhan took out the pheasant from her storage space that hadn't had its tail or wings clipped.

The pheasant was alive, and it struggled to run away as soon as Du Yuhan grabbed it.

Du Yuhan gripped the base of the pheasant's two wings tightly, no matter how much it struggled, it was no use.

Because she was carrying a pheasant, Du Yuhan tried to quicken her pace.

Today was a sunny day, and the sun felt very warm on her skin. By the time she got home, Du Yuhan was sweating.

Today is the day to buy grain, and Liu Gang went to buy grain to supply Du Yuhan.

Du Yuhan's household registration was transferred to the small courtyard, and her grain ration was transferred to the cadre retirement home. In the future, she could just go to the cadre retirement home to collect grain coupons and other certificates. This was the result of Yao Jingsong's efforts.

This is convenient and reliable; with Yao Jingsong overseeing things, Du Yuhan will definitely not suffer losses.

Du Yuhan opened the gate and saw a bicycle parked in the yard, so she knew Liu Gang had returned.

Liu Gang guessed that Du Yuhan should be back and kept looking towards the door. As soon as he saw Du Yuhan return, he quickly ran out of the house.

Liu Gang knew that Du Yuhan's arm had healed, so he went to the mountains to dig for wild vegetables today. He was looking forward to Du Yuhan returning from hunting, as they hadn't had any meat for days and were craving it terribly.

"Yuhan, did you catch any prey today?"

After asking the question, he saw the pheasant still struggling in Du Yuhan's hand and exclaimed in surprise, "This pheasant is still alive!"

Du Yuhan nodded and said, "I finally managed to catch this. Hurry up and go inside to get some scissors. I'll cut off its wings and tail so it can't fly. Then we'll get it a chicken coop to lay eggs."

Upon hearing this, Liu Gang was overjoyed and quickly went inside to get the scissors.

Du Yuhan was holding a pheasant when Liu Gang quickly shredded it bald with his scissors.

Then Liu Gang took a hemp rope and tied one of the pheasant's legs to prevent it from escaping.

After finishing, Liu Gang asked, "Yuhan, did you catch any other prey?"

Du Yuhan looked at Liu Gang's expectant expression and laughed, "Needless to say, two wild rabbits and a pheasant are at the bottom of the basket."

Upon hearing this, Liu Gang cheered, "Great! I'll prepare the prey."

He then went over to look at the willow basket that Du Yuhan had placed on the ground. Seeing the basket full of fresh wild vegetables, he decided that he would go dig for wild vegetables with Du Yuhan tomorrow as well.

Han Yixian heard Liu Gang's cheers and saw the two little ones chattering in the yard through the living room window, and knew that Du Yuhan had caught prey again.

Through his observations over the past few days, he realized that Du Yuhan was a very cautious girl, possessing a maturity far beyond her years yet still lively. He gradually stopped treating her like a child.

He had warned Du Yuhan about the wolves in the mountains, and he believed that with Du Yuhan's caution, she wouldn't risk going deep into the mountains.

Liu Gang, carrying a basket, followed Du Yuhan into the house and happily said to Han Yixian, "Commander, Yuhan hunted two rabbits and a pheasant. We'll have meat to eat again this time."

Du Yuhan said, "Brother Han, I came across a great place today. The wild vegetables are all growing really big. How about we have shepherd's purse dumplings for lunch today?"

Han Yi nodded first, "Okay, you pour the wild vegetables on the table, and I'll help you pick them. We'll have wild vegetable dumplings for lunch. Do we have any eggs at home? Put a few in."

Du Yuhan nodded and said, "Yes, I'll add a few later, it'll taste even better that way."
