Chapter Thirty-Three: Digging for Wild Vegetables

As the earth gradually warmed up, Du Yuhan's arm was completely healed.

Before this, Han Yixian had never allowed Du Yuhan to go into the mountains to dig for wild vegetables, let alone hunt. Of course, Du Yuhan wouldn't go against Han Yixian on this matter.

Han Yixian specifically asked Liu Gang to inquire with the locals, who said that there were wolves in the mountains. Because there had been incidents of wolves attacking people in the past, Han Yixian no longer allowed Du Yuhan to go deep into the mountains to hunt. He only allowed her to wander around the outer edges of the mountains. If she didn't catch any prey, it was fine as just playing around.

Wild vegetables sprouted in the sunny spots on the mountainside, which delighted Du Yuhan. Finally, she could eat fresh wild vegetables.

Although Du Yuhan often adds extra meals to her diet in her online space, she always felt guilty eating alone. Now that there are finally some fresh vegetables on the table, she thought Han Yixian would be happy too.

Du Yuhan made some of the cabbages that Yao Jingsong brought into kimchi, some into sauerkraut, and ate the few remaining ones fresh.

Cabbage is cheap and easy to buy, and it's a good stuff. However, it gradually doesn't taste as good as the weather gets warmer.

Luancheng only had one snowfall last year, and there hasn't been any rain this year, indicating signs of drought.

Han Yixian has replied to Liu Gang's letter six times. Although there is still no news about the policy that Du Yuhan heard about, droughts of varying degrees have indeed occurred in various places, and if this continues, a drought disaster is very likely to occur.

Along with the letter came various tickets that the comrades didn't need for the time being, but there weren't many, since no one is rich these days.

Han Yi first planned to have Du Yuhan take some time to buy all the items.

Du Yuhan is now thinking about how to provide Han Yixian with different kinds of nutrition every day.

If fruit is hard to come by, we can find a way to get it from vegetables, especially the various wild vegetables that are now growing.

The most common wild vegetables in Luancheng nowadays are shepherd's purse and sow thistle. In spring, picking the tender stems or buds of shepherd's purse, blanching them in boiling water, and then making a cold salad is very delicious. Shepherd's purse can also be used to make soup, vegetable porridge, and dumplings.

Shepherd's purse is rich in vitamins, which Han Yixian desperately needs.

After eating radishes, cabbages, and potatoes all winter, it feels wonderful to eat newly grown wild vegetables.

The same goes for bitter greens; apart from being slightly bitter, they taste quite good and can be eaten raw in salads, dipped in sauce, or used in dumplings.

Du Yuhan plans to dig up more to make shepherd's purse dumplings.

Du Yuhan also planted several kinds of wild vegetables common in Luancheng in her space, just to use them to make up the numbers at this time.

Du Yuhan specially cleared out a plot of land in the space and dug up several kinds of newly sprouted wild vegetables from the mountains to plant in the field.

The space was great; not only did all the wild vegetables survive, but they also quickly grew, flowered, and produced seeds.

After harvesting the wild vegetable seeds, Du Yuhan began planting a large quantity of various wild vegetables to ensure she had enough to eat when needed.

After finishing breakfast, Du Yuhan said goodbye and went to the mountainside to dig for wild vegetables by herself.

This time, Du Yuhan carried a willow basket and a small shovel. Inside the willow basket was a smaller bow and arrow.

This is the bow and arrow that Han Yixian made.

When Han Yixian gave Du Yuhan the smaller bow and arrow he had made, Du Yuhan was still very happy, even though she already had a guess.

This was made by Han Yixian himself; the materials and workmanship are much better than the bow she made.

That big one is too difficult to pull, so for now I'll use this small one.

Because she went into the mountains to dig for wild vegetables, Du Yuhan is now wearing her old, worn-out clothes.

After buying the fabric last time, Du Yuhan made herself a set of underwear. It's better to wear new underwear; she just can't stand wearing someone else's hand-me-downs.

As for her cotton-padded coat and outer garment, their worn-out state was acceptable. Besides, her clothes were all too old, most of them were beyond repair and could be used as linings and shoe soles.

She has already made a pair of soft slippers for Han Yixian to wear at home, and a pair of cloth shoes with multiple layers of soles for herself and Liu Gang. The pair for Han Yixian is currently being made.

Liu Gang really liked the pair of cloth shoes she gave him; they were very comfortable to wear.

Han Xiuqin initially gave Du Yuhan a few clothes, and later had Yuan Qiwen send Du Yuhan a few more sets of old clothes that Yuan Qiwen had outgrown. Now Du Yuhan has a few sets of clothes, which is more than enough for her.

Cloth ration coupons were in short supply, and wearing other people's old clothes was a common thing in this era. Du Yuhan could accept it completely and was very grateful for Han Xiuqin's care.

Du Yuhan also made a shirt for Han Yixian and Liu Gang each, which made Liu Gang extremely happy. Although Han Yixian didn't show his joy as much as Liu Gang, he was still very happy.

Han Yixian also gave Du Yuhan his brand-new military uniform that he had never worn before, so that she could alter it to fit her.

Military uniforms were very popular clothing for people in this era. Du Yuhan was very happy to receive this gift, but she couldn't bear to alter it.

She knew she would grow taller soon, and if she altered her clothes now, they would soon be too small for her. She wanted to wait until she grew taller before altering her clothes.

Han Yi chuckled and shook his head when he heard Du Yuhan's plan, letting her do whatever she wanted. But he was pleased to see how much Du Yuhan liked the military uniform he had given her.

Han Yixian didn't know why he felt awkward seeing Du Yuhan wearing other people's old clothes, even if they were his own little cousin's.

He always felt that it was unfair to Du Yuhan to wear other people's old clothes.

He decided to find someone to exchange some cloth coupons, so that Du Yuhan would at least have new clothes to wear in the future. She couldn't always wear other people's old clothes.

Du Yuhan was unaware of how much Han Yixian had considered for her; her current focus was on finding more wild vegetables.

She found a sunny spot where the wild vegetables had grown quite tall, but she would need a lot to make dumplings. Luckily, she had some similar ones in her storage space, so she could just use more to make up the numbers.

Du Yuhan didn't wait for the wild vegetables she planted in the space to fully mature before harvesting them; instead, she harvested them in different stages.

This is also a great advantage of the space being very flexible; you can harvest whenever you want, which is very user-friendly.

Furthermore, seeds and seedlings obtained from outside the space can be planted inside. Although the space level is not high enough to purchase many seeds from the store, Du Yuhan can obtain a large number of seeds from outside the space.

After symbolically digging up some wild vegetables, Du Yuhan headed deeper into the forest. She knew that besides the dangers posed by poisonous snakes and insects, there might also be wolves in the mountains.

However, the weather is just starting to warm up, and snakes aren't very active yet, so there's no need to worry. As for wolves, she has her spatial ability, so she's not afraid either. Her spatial ability is equipped with weapons, ensuring that any wolves that come will not return.
