The next morning, Yun Duo was woken up by Yun Qi Shi at 5:30. When she woke up, Yun Da Zheng had already washed up. Seeing Yun Duo come out, he said, "Duo'er, go wash your face and wake up. After breakfast, we'll go to town."
Yunduo was still a little dazed. Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she yawned and asked, "Huh? Go to town? Grandpa, it's not market day today, why do we have to go to town?"
Yun Dazheng shook his head with a smile and said reproachfully, "This child, have you forgotten? Grandpa is taking you to register today. We need to go early so the teacher won't wait."
"Oh dear! I forgot!" Yun Duo exclaimed, slapping her forehead upon hearing Yun Dazheng's words. She was now wide awake and hurriedly went to wash her face and rinse her mouth.
Yun Qishi brought in porridge and pickled vegetables, put them on the table, looked at Yun Dazheng with some concern, and said in a low voice, "Yesterday I was so happy that I forgot that our home is too far from the town. It takes more than an hour to walk there. It's okay now that it's summer, it's already dawn. But what will happen to our Duo'er when it's winter?"
Yun Dazheng was somewhat dismissive and whispered, "Studying is something that can't be done without any hardship. Don't worry, old woman, our Duo'er has suffered a lot in the past. This little thing won't scare her."
Madam Yun Qi glared at Yun Dazheng and said, "How could I not know that I can't scare her? I just feel sorry for her. How old is the child? She wasn't raised well before, what if she suffers more in the future and doesn't grow tall?"
Yun Dazheng laughed and said, "Tall girls are fine. We don't lack food at home now. Let's make sure Duo'er eats well, with meat and eggs. She'll grow up healthy and strong." As he spoke, he went to the kitchen to help serve the food.
Breakfast was a thick white rice porridge without any wild vegetables. I also made a small pancake and boiled an egg for Yunduo.
While Yun Duo ate, Yun Qi Shi sat beside her, peeling the eggs for her and handing them to Yun Duo.
Yun Duo took the egg, said nothing, broke off a large piece and fed it to Yun Qishi, then broke off another large piece for Yun Dazheng, while she herself only ate a small half.
"You child..." Madam Yunqi hurriedly swallowed the egg and looked at Yun Duo, saying, "Studying is the most brain-intensive activity. Grandma specially cooked this to help you improve your brain function. Why did you share it with Grandpa and Grandma? We old folks don't need to eat eggs."
Yun Duo smiled and finished the egg in her hand before saying, "Grandma, let's boil three eggs every morning from now on, one for each of us. I don't like eating alone."
Yun Qishi habitually said, "The chickens at home haven't laid any eggs yet, so where are we going to get so many eggs to eat..."
Yun Da interrupted Yun Qishi, saying, "It's not like we can't afford it. We're not short of money. Let's listen to Duo'er. We two old folks need to eat well and take good care of our health so we can live a few more years and watch Duo'er grow up."
The child is still young; we can't let her go to school in town alone, and we certainly can't let her go on an empty stomach. The two elderly people have to get up to cook and then take the child to and from school. It might not seem like much for a day or two, but over time it becomes exhausting. How can their bodies withstand it if they don't eat well?
In the past, it was one thing to be poor, but now that we have money, we can't skimp on food.
Yun Qishi always obeyed whatever Yun Dazheng said. No matter how much she felt it was a waste, she would nod and agree as soon as Yun Dazheng spoke.
