After finishing his meal, Yun Dazheng told his wife to clean up the dishes before going back to sleep. He then took some water and led Yun Duo out the door. It was summer, and although it was still early, the sun was already up. Knowing that it would be sunny when he returned, Yun Dazheng decided to take a straw hat with him.
The grandfather and grandson didn't waste any time and rushed all the way, arriving at the school gate before eight o'clock.
However, there were already quite a few children and parents at the school, all there to register. At a glance, all the children registering were boys; there wasn't a single girl among them.
Nowadays, although both boys and girls can attend modern schools, that's mostly in cities. The bigger the city, the more girls you see in school. But in a small place like Chang Le Town, those who can afford to go to school are mostly boys from families that are relatively well-off; girls are rarely seen. Therefore, when the boys learned that Yun Duo was also there to enroll, they looked at her with eyes full of curiosity, as if she were a rare sight.
When Yun Dazheng saw this, he couldn't help but worry that the boys would be naughty and that Yun Duo would be bullied by them. For a moment, he was unsure whether sending Yun Duo to school was the right or wrong thing to do.
Seeing Yun Dazheng look at her hesitantly several times, Yun Duo understood and said with a smile, "Grandpa, don't worry, Duo'er isn't afraid. There are teachers at school, they wouldn't dare to bully anyone."
Come to think of it, teachers in schools are not just for show.
Thinking this, Yun Dazheng felt a little relieved. He patted Yun Duo's little head and instructed her, "Pay attention in class from now on. Don't look around. Don't be naughty after class either. If anyone bullies you, tell the teacher and let the teacher scold them."
"Okay, Duo'er will listen to Grandpa." To put the old man at ease, Yun Duo nodded with a smile.
Before long, it was time for Yun Duo and Yun Dazheng to go into the office to complete their enrollment procedures. Yun Dazheng led Yun Duo in very carefully, not daring to look around, for fear of leaving a bad impression on the teacher in charge of enrollment and affecting Yun Duo.
Yun Duo, however, was not intimidated. She followed Yun Dazheng into the office. Although she didn't look around aimlessly, her eyes were clear, and it was obvious that she wasn't nervous. She was better than many of the boys who had just come to register with their parents.
The teacher in charge of new student admissions, surnamed Zhou, still had some influence with Yun Dazheng. He smiled and said, "Grandpa, this must be your granddaughter, right? Not bad, she looks quite clever." As he spoke, he nodded and asked, "Little girl, can you count?"
"Yes, I will." Yun Duo nodded and replied earnestly.
"Can you count to one hundred?" Teacher Zhou asked again.
"Yes," Yun Duo nodded and replied loudly.
Teacher Zhou then said, "Then, count for me from one to one hundred."
Yun Duo knew that this was probably a test similar to an entrance exam, so she nodded and started counting one, two, three, four.
Yun Duo's idea is correct; this is the entrance test for first grade at Chang Le Town Elementary School. It doesn't require children to be able to write or do math; the main focus is on whether the child speaks clearly and has normal intelligence.
Hearing Yun Duo count to one hundred fluently in a clear voice without pausing, Teacher Zhou was quite pleased and, for the first time ever, asked, "You count so fluently, little girl, can you do math?"
