At three o'clock in the afternoon, the weather was still unbearably hot. There was no coolness in the stuffy woodshed, only rolling heat waves that made people irritable and restless.
Perhaps exhausted from scolding, Zhao Cuifen had long since stopped. Yun Duo lay on the tattered straw mat, hungry, thirsty, and hot, feeling somewhat drowsy. Suddenly! A slightly shrill child's voice rang out.
"I don't want to! Why should I cut pig feed? I'm only six years old! Yun Shuisheng, you're such a big kid, yet you're lazy and don't want to do any work, and you're even pushing the work onto me. Aren't you ashamed?"
In the main room of Yun Youliang's house, six-year-old Yun Yusheng jumped up and down, pointing at Yun Shuisheng and shouting.
Yun Shuisheng snorted coldly, not even looking at Yun Yusheng, but instead looking at Yun Youliang who was smoking a tobacco leaf on the side, and called out, "Dad."
Yun Youliang's face immediately hardened. He slammed his pipe heavily on the table and hissed, "You disrespectful brat! How dare you talk to your brother like that?" Then, he looked at Zhao Cuifen beside him and said in an extremely dissatisfied tone, "Look at the good son you've raised!"
Yun Yusheng was actually a little afraid of Yun Youliang, but Yun Youliang was just too biased. He had been holding back his anger all day, and now seeing Yun Youliang being so unreasonable in his favoritism, he couldn't suppress his anger any longer. Even though he was scared, he still shouted, "You're biased!"
"It's clearly Yun Shuisheng who has no respect for his elders. Otherwise, why would he push the task onto me when my mother asked him to cut pig feed? He's such a grown man, can't he even cut a little bit of pig feed?"
Yun Youliang's face grew increasingly grim. He slammed his hand on the table and roared, "You bastard! How dare you talk to me like that? Your brother is getting married tomorrow, so let him rest today. That's what I said, so what? Am I wrong?"
Seeing Yun Youliang's menacing expression, Zhao Cuifen was frightened. Although in her heart, her son from her previous marriage was more important, she still loved Yun Yusheng. She immediately grabbed Yun Yusheng and hurriedly said, "Yusheng, Yusheng, don't talk nonsense. How can you talk to your father like that? It's not that your brother is trying to push the work onto you, it's your mother, no... it's that brat Yun Duo!"
At this point, Zhao Cuifen raised her voice, as if it were truly Yun Duo's fault, and said emphatically, "If it weren't for that brat wanting to jump into the river for no reason, which is why I don't dare to let her out now, she should be the one cutting pig feed!"
Yun Yusheng was also afraid of being beaten. Hearing Zhao Cuifen's words, he nodded heavily and said angrily, "That's right, it's all that brat's fault!" He then pouted at Zhao Cuifen and said, "Mom, I don't want to cut pig feed. I've never cut it before. What if I cut my hand?" He paused and added, "Besides, I don't even know what pig feed is. The pigs won't eat it even if I cut it."
Zhao Cuifen also felt that her son made sense. After thinking for a moment, she said, "Then go to the field at Yantangwan and cut some thick-skinned vegetables. Just fill a basket, it'll be quick."
He paused, glanced at Yun Youliang, and deliberately lowered his voice, whispering, "Once you've chopped it up, secretly go and call your grandfather, and have him carry it back for you."
Hearing Zhao Cuifen's words, Yun Yusheng felt that he could not only ask his grandfather to carry the pig feed back for him, but also to help him cut the thick-skinned vegetables. Since he had always helped his uncle's family with chores, he should help himself too. So he nodded and said, "Okay."
Yun Youliang naturally heard Zhao Cuifen's words, but Zhao Cuifen deliberately lowered her voice, so he pretended not to hear them and just said in a pretentious manner, "Chop down the old ones, we still need to eat the young ones."
Although Yun Yusheng felt he could get his grandfather to do chores for him, he still felt resentful because he thought Yun Youliang was biased. Afraid of being beaten, he could only nod again and sullenly reply, "I understand."
