"Yusheng, where's your sister?"
Yun Youliang's father, Yun Duo's grandfather, and Yun Dazheng, with their backs hunched, carried a large basket of pig feed into Yun Youliang's yard. Before they could put down the heavy basket, they looked around the yard and, not seeing Yun Duo, couldn't help but ask.
In front of Yun Dazheng, Yun Yusheng was always obedient. He knew that Yun Dazheng loved Yun Duo just as much as he loved them. When he heard Yun Dazheng's words, he said, "Ah? My sister? Is she sleeping?" Then he said, "Grandpa, please put the basket down. It's so heavy, don't let it weigh you down." As he spoke, he made a gesture to take the basket from Yun Dazheng.
"Sleep?" Yun Dazheng asked with some doubt, then said to Yun Yusheng, "You can't carry this, move aside a bit." As he spoke, he carefully squatted down, put the basket down, took a breath, and then stood up with some difficulty.
Then, looking at Yun Yusheng, she frowned and asked, "When you came back this morning, did your mother beat your sister again? She beat her so badly that she couldn't get out of bed?" As she spoke, the more she thought about it, the more she realized it was true, and her voice unconsciously carried anger.
"No." Yun Yusheng shook his head, avoiding the main point, and replied, "My mother didn't hit her."
In Yun Youliang's family, everyone can take a nap, but Yun Duo doesn't get that privilege. No matter how hot the weather is, Zhao Cuifen makes Yun Duo go out to work under the scorching sun, which is something everyone knows.
Therefore, Yun Dazheng clearly did not believe Yun Yusheng's words. As he spoke, he walked towards the woodshed where Yun Duo lived, saying as he went, "Then why is she still sleeping at this hour? Would your mother be so kind?" When he reached the door of the woodshed and saw the lock on it, Yun Dazheng's face immediately turned ugly. He raised his voice and said angrily, "So as soon as you came back this morning, your mother locked your sister up? Not only did she not call a doctor, but she didn't even give her any food or drink?"
He paused, then added, "Didn't you hide any food for your sister? Didn't you bring her any drinks?"
Yun Yusheng's eyes darted around for a moment, then he forced a smile and said, "Grandpa, I don't dare. My dad is so fierce. He broke my mom's head and he wants to hit me too..."
Upon hearing Yun Yusheng's words, Yun Dazheng sighed deeply, unable to utter any more words of blame towards Yun Yusheng.
Zhao Cuifen knew her own son well. If it weren't for Yun Youliang's indifference and indulgence, she would never have dared to treat Yun Duo so badly.
Ultimately, it's all because he didn't raise his sons well... Now he's old and relies on his sons for a living, so he can't be assertive anymore, otherwise...
Thinking about it, Yun Dazheng's eyes reddened. He weakly punched himself twice, barely managing to compose himself, and forced himself to press his face against the crack in the woodshed door, calling softly, "Duo'er, Duo'er, Grandpa has come to see you, Duo'er..."
Yunduo was still half asleep when she heard an old man calling her. Before she could react, her body instinctively got out of bed and stumbled toward the door.
That was the body's grandfather. He and the original owner's grandmother were the only two people who still had some pity and care for Yun Duo. However, he relied on his son for survival and couldn't stand up for himself. No matter how much he tried to persuade Yun Duo, Yun Youliang and his wife wouldn't listen, and there was nothing he could do. He could only occasionally hide some food and other things and secretly give them to Yun Duo.
"Grandpa." Yun Duo called out softly, following her instinct, as she reached the door of the woodshed. As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt a lump in her throat, her eyes stinging, and a sense of grievance welled up inside her.
Yun Dazheng's eyes reddened even more, and he quickly said, "Oh, good child, you've suffered. It's Grandpa's fault..." Then he said to Yun Yusheng, "Yusheng, hurry up and go get your sister a bowl of water. Listen to your sister's voice, it's so hoarse." He also instructed, "Make sure the water has been boiled and cooled down."
"Oh." Yun Yusheng reluctantly agreed and dawdled as he went to the kitchen.
As soon as Yun Yusheng left, Yun Dazheng quickly stuffed three round eggs into the gap under the threshold and said in a low voice, "Duo'er, quickly put them away. These are wild eggs that Grandpa found. Your grandma secretly cooked them for you. Hide them and eat them quietly later."
"Thank you, Grandpa." Knowing her own condition, Yun Duo didn't stand on ceremony with the old man, thanked him quietly, and then hid the wild eggs.
However, one of the wild eggs looked strangely familiar to her...
